Great bushcraft project. You can also cinch up the front panel with cordage or a belt. This will keep the poncho closer to the body when walking and clear of the open flame of a campfire.

Or add a button or snap to close both ends

That is exactly what I’ve been trying to find on the internet. Just a plain warm poncho. Don’t have the machine to do it myself so might source a taylor/machinist to do it for me. Well done buddy.

Hi John, you can do a hand-stitched blanket stitch and that should serve just as well. There are plenty of youtube tutorials from basic to decorative.

Looks excellent. I just got a poncho but it's a lightweight one -- good to know that it's not too difficult to make a heavier one for cooler weather. Great instructional, thank you.

Great idea thank you. Two slits at the waist front/back and you could feed a leather belt through for extra snugness. Just an idea.

I just ordered a wool blanket to make into a poncho. I'm having a professional do the sewing though. That part is way of of my wheel house.

Wouldn't have thought to do that T cut at middle front neckline. Nice advice to serge first before doing heavy stitching at bottom of slit

Doing all this by hand is tedious and time-consuming....
