This can also be a good drill for maintaining midfield positional play if the number 9 is switched for a 10 and his job is to create an opportunity for a forward pass from the 6 and 8...then link the striker

I don't understand all those air balls in tight spaces like here...you should teach them to keep the ball always on the ground whatever happen...except for a true long ball or a through ball in the air....If they feel like being forced to play air balls on short distances it's because they were not well positioned or because their ball controls was not good

Chipping over pressing defenders allows to move the ball even when every pass is cut off. You have to trust your teammates to settle the ball good though

"Keeping possession without trying to score is not realistic"...YES it is...most teams winning 1-0 tehy keep possession and try to take the ball to the corner...on such tight space why are players trying long ball...at one point the players with red bib had one team mate 5 yrds away but tried some kind of skill and lost the ball...on such tight space should you not encorage short passes?

josh young nah mate, only been coaching at one of the best clubs in Southern California for 15 years... No idea. I am sure you know better though.

southern cali must simply be the most direct soccer available then, considering you're worried about too tight of space when working on possession lol. Which is what you need to work on it......possession practice with a big space is useless, you'll never get that in a game.

Agreed. Just look at the frequency of the elevated passes when trying to play through a line. That's an indication that they could not find passing opportunities on the ground, which directly correlates to the lack of available space. The obvious implication playing an aerial pass is slower speed of play. 90% of the passes were simply playing to a checking runner, who then played back to the same teammate. The area looks like it's 40x10 yards. Even 15 yards width would have greatly improved the fluidity of this exercise for this group. It's also not an unrealistic dimension for training possession through the midfield. Ultimately, the high the level of play, the less space necessary. Younger or less technical teams might need 20 yards width or a change in numbers and organization like you suggested.
