Jake, thank you for this reaction. I returned to the past, to my wonderful Yugoslavia, in which I was born. I miss that country so much .... When Riva won, it was a general euphoria, and we were all so happy .... Beautiful, old, innocent and happy times... This was very emotional for me... Thanks Jake, once again, smile is on my face ....
I think the asterisk is there because Yugoslavia as a country doesn't' exist anymore. Now there is six new countries instead (Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Montenegro and FYR of Macedonia (and Kosovo that is not recognized by UN and by EBU). The next ESC was held in Zagreb, and not in Belgrade because the group was from Croatia. Fun fact Yugoslavia was the only communist country that competed in Eurovision.
Well, Kosovo is trying to get into EBU right now, so there is a small chance we might see them at Eurovision in the coming years. I just hope it won't be at the expense of other countries that are against it and would leave.
I don't think it will happen, at least not until UN recognize it. It would be a huge problem because we would for sure see Serbia leaving the contest, and Spain, one of the big five, would never let Kosovo into Eurovision because of Catalonia. There is also many other possibly "offended" countries like Azerbaijan, Israel, Greece... It is highly unlikely to see that happen any time soon. Eurovision is about music, but sadly it is shady politics as well.
Maybe they could do something similar to the Olympics, where some people can take part without representing a specific country. But that would probably make the voting very confusing and then everyone who lost their national final would want to take that spot.
He played for days on end, on his piano He played the classics, as he read the notes And he played like a real pianist - Mozart, Chopin, Liszt I found a new song to play, oh... Rock me, baby - doesn't matter what it is Rock me, baby - as long as it lasts Rock me, baby - (this one's) to calm your stress trance Rock me, baby - doesn't matter what it is Rock me, baby - as long as it lasts Rock me, baby - just let it be made for a dance Even these days, I hear the sound of the old piano The song you play without reading notes 'cause the classics are made to be heard Hearts to get high by each word And this song is made for a dance Rock me, baby - doesn't matter what it is Rock me, baby - as long as it lasts Rock me, baby (this one's) to calm your stress trance Rock me, baby - doesn't matter what it is Rock me, baby - as long as it lasts Rock me, baby - just let it be made for a dance
Like many of the Yugoslavian entries from the late eighties the composition was based on rock 'n roll rhytmns of the sixties, but they were quite succesfull with these upbeat entries.
This band RIva (which were making: Emilija Kokić, lead singer; Dalibor Misap; Zvonimir Zrlić; Boško Colić and Nanad Nakić) is from my birh town Zadar in Dalmatia. There were a huge madness when they came back from Lausanne. About dress and shues, TV Zagre, nowadays HRT, invest about 30.000 USD to dress a band members, Višnja Trusić from Dior Croatia made the whole style for Emilija and guys including shues.
Jake, I think, you need to react to F.Y.R. Macedonia's Vlatko Ilievski's performance in 2011 Eurovision Song Contest. He was found dead this morning, he was only 33 years old.
A winner in a year that according to the juries had to go to an upbeat song. But my nr 1 for that year is definitely Spain. Plz react to it sometime, so Spain 1989
MartsHH I agree. He must react to songs before 2000 as well, and he has, even if it's a few songs. I hope he will react to more 70s and 80s songs, there are lots of «Golden moments» in those years. It's good if he can mix them, and it looks like the random drawings he is doing leads to this mix.
I think once you've finished Eurovision songs you should react to the history of each country :) That would be interesting, of course if you're interested in knowing more about the countries and Europe :)
Hey Jake, you might find somewhere on UA-cam a live English version as they sang it in English in their winner performance. In an interview a few years back someone actually asked the singer why she sang in English, she said she absolutely has no idea, she had like a blackout from all the excitement, just came on the stage and started singing in English
Nice song, but they had so many and much better songs in the years before that: 1983, 1986, 1987 and 1988. Their hosting song in 1990 is also better and their final song as a united country in 1992 is so beautiful! This wasn't the winner performance. That was performed in English.
1989 was the first ESC I saw in its entirity as a kid, so this one will always have a special place in my heart - even though it's not that good of a song. Remember that was the time before the internet when nobody in Europe except some die-heart affictionados knew about the songs from all the other countries before the contest. But for some reason and totally coincidentally I saw a video of the Yugoslav entry on TV before the contest and thought this was soo much better than our song - and I was right! ;-) And yes, you assumed correctly, they tried to emulate some 50's style Rock'n'Roll. At that time Eurovision was very far from having really contemporary or modern music in the contest so all the songs felt kind of dated.
I have the same sentiments about the 1989 Eurovision. I was eleven and recorded it on VCR. What a great year! Many good songs and such an elegantly staged Eurovision. And what a beautiful French spoken by the presenters.
1989 was the year france and isreal had under 16 years old singing so they change the age ruling . highlights for me this years . Spain . Portugal. and Demark.
Jake, your comment about Back To The Future makes a lot of sense. First of all because the Back To The Future movies came out in the 80s but also, during the late 80s, there was a big retro music wave that happened. For example, Swing The Mood by Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers was one of the biggest songs in the world during that time period and it's basically a medley of old 50s and 60s songs.
I'm assuming the asterisk beside winner is due to the fact that it is the only country that has won that no longer exists. Some people try to discount the win but Yugoslavia was a country when it won so it should stand, but then again it was won by a Croatian singer and was held the following year in Zagreb (capital of Croatia).
the asterisk might relate to the fact that yugoslavia no longer exists and it's just a marker. i seem to have seen that before, but not everywhere., they won and Zagreb hosted the 1990 edition of the show. I've also seen the asterisk in relation to Serbia & Montenegro when they were together. Italy won in Zagreb.
Please Jake, react to Yugoslavia 1991.It's going to be fun!!!Let go these songs off nowdays for a minut.Just sit and listen to wonderfull melodies of '80. and '90.You can drink a beer, behind the camera ;-).Did I wrote right beer?
I think you are confused regarding Back to the Future. There's only 3 movies in the franchise. "The Power of Love" and "Back in Time" by Huey Lewis & The News are the most well-known songs from it (for comparison).
In that time was only jury. 16 jury members in each country. Juries did not watch the show, so they have no nay possible to see how Emilia and others band mamber where dressed or does they dance or not. This song is so pale, but when you put them in context of that year competition they have to won. Coz others where the same or even worse. After two years of balade (1987. Johnny Logan - Hold me now, and 1988. Céline DIon - Ne partez pas sans moi), Riva have to win.
It's very 80`s, but I think it is a bit meh. It is difficult to understand how this song won that year and the beautiful Spanish song was only 6th. I would suggest to you to react to it too, but I think the list for reaction requests is closed at the moment
It may be difficult for you to understand, but tastes vary. I prefer this one over the Spanish song which I do think is nice, but just a little bit boring.
Precisely. Some Croatians count this as "their" win. Which is sort of like the UK claiming "All Kinds of Everything" as a British win (Dana's from Derry). :)

Yugoslavia was socialist republic btw
One thing - Yugoslavia wasn't communistic country since Constitution changes 1963.
He played for days on end, on his piano

I found a new song to play, oh...

Rock me, baby - doesn't matter what it is

Even these days, I hear the sound of the old piano
The song you play without reading notes
'cause the classics are made to be heard
Hearts to get high by each word
And this song is made for a dance
Rock me, baby - doesn't matter what it is
Rock me, baby - as long as it lasts
Rock me, baby (this one's) to calm your stress trance
Rock me, baby - doesn't matter what it is
Rock me, baby - as long as it lasts

The group and their singer Emilja Kokic came from Croatia, so they still say they did win that year
Marco van Melis What???
didn't we, though?

Кирилл Глебов Oh, i'm so sorry!! 😕 It's so sad...
This was a Croatian group Riva and next year's ESC was held in Zagreb, Croatia.
A winner in a year that according to the juries had to go to an upbeat song. But my nr 1 for that year is definitely Spain. Plz react to it sometime, so Spain 1989
oh yes i agree love the spanish entry that year
You are so right! Spain had a better song that year! 👍
This is fun but their 1990 entry is much better and you should react to it too.

dolunay benli Oh... I really love that one. And the official video was beautiful too...
It was a great entry that year - I still had my own country as number 1, but I think back on the Yugoslavian winner with good feelings :)
Nice song, but they had so many and much better songs in the years before that: 1983, 1986, 1987 and 1988. Their hosting song in 1990 is also better and their final song as a united country in 1992 is so beautiful! This wasn't the winner performance. That was performed in English.
Linda Kristine Kjørlibråten, congratulations on your excellent knowledge of Eurovision song contest
You should react to Yugoslavia ‘83! Now that’s a fun entry!
In fact, the top 4 from 1983 would be a great one to check out!
You should react to yugoslavia 1990 and you will see the the rock music sounds like '80
Cool one. Of all the Yugoslavia entries I've heard, it's my 5th favorite behind 1968 (no.1), 1983 (no.2), 1986 (no.3) and 1988 (no.4).

You should react to the Yugoslavian entry from 1991
Person I love 1991! Brasil! By Baby Doll ❤️
The best Yugoslavian entry ever, so before it's time. That's why it was placed so badly. Europe was not ready for it.
Baby Doll finished second to last just because the war was starting in Yugoslavia!
@@discogareth YESSS! Baby Doll...Very underestimated song, because it was ahead of that time!
@@Ladyhighlander Baby Doll song Rudi that compete in Yugoslav eurovision 1983 was ahead off its time ua-cam.com/video/G-Wbq-3YzUs/v-deo.html

A Yugoslavian entry and Croatia wins the quarterfinals. Hmm... Can Jake predict football results?
Very catchy song. Love it!
Jake, after they won they get out on the stage and sanged this winner on English.
Wow! I had no idea you went this far😂
You should react to United Kingdom 1989 too. It's my favorite that year.

Probably as Yugoslavia do not exist and win is count for Serbia and Montenegro by legality, but other way is is Yugoslav performer from Croatia
