  • With the hot days of summer many families take the opportunity to enjoy their walks in the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. With these condensed walking time periods the likelihood of having a bad encounter while on a walk is even higher. Barking, snarling, biting, and full-blown attacks are just a few of the potential risks.
Watch this video to learn how to identify the indicators that a dog is more likely to show aggression to your Great Dane, as well as how to avoid them.

I keep a harness on my dane whenever we go out in public. He's "generally" pretty well behaved, but since we live out in the woods and going out in public is not a daily thing, he does sometimes get curious, so I find that it's easier to keep a harness on him with a handle on top so that I've got something I can get positive control of to keep him extra close when I need to, and then let the leash out for the rest of the time so he has some room to move. For example, he LOVES going into Tractor Supply, but until we're actually inside the store I keep hold of his harness and keep him right next to me to keep him from trying to say hello to literally everybody while we're in the confined space of the entryway. Once we're inside I usually just clip his leash to a belt loop and he stays next to me.

Yup! It’s just as important to watch other dogs body language as it is to watch your own dogs body language. 👍👍

I got my Great Dane in July last year his name was Grucho and him and I used to watch your videos together it was always funny because he’d actually watch and get super close to the tv and stare at Gus but today I left him in the super vision of my dad while I went out to go do some things and I when I came back a couple hours later i discovered his lifeless body on my back porch.it was quite obvious that he was dead by the gloss over his eyes and his bowels released but I rushed him to the vet anyway just out of instinct. The vet confirmed he was dead and checked him out thoroughly and confirmed this it was not bloat and he had no wounds or trauma anywhere and was quite certain that by the way it just happened so suddenly and had no warning signs and by the fact that he was only a year and two months old that the cause of death was from heart failure. I lost a piece of me today. I’m 19 and this is my first dog I had bought all by myself and raised all by myself. He was everything I ever wanted. So people please buy from breeders who can guarantee the dog is free from birth defects that will cause future heart failure and treasure every moment you have with them even when they are young because as I learned today they can be taken from you at any moment. R.I.P Grucho 5/22/19- 8/20/20

I am very sorrow for you. I know what you are going through as it happened to me. I lost my Dane at the age of 9 months without warning .
Hold on to the great memories like I do...

Another suggestion: If your dog has certain triggers that cause them to act in a way that is difficult to control, I recommend a leash that has a handle close to the clip. If you notice a trigger coming up, you can proactively grab that handle and it's a lot easier to keep control since the dog has much less slack and opportunity to gain momentum. We also use a prong collar but I don't recommend using one of those without doing research and/or getting training on how to use it first.

Our puppies, yes plural, came to their forever home just 3 days ago, I’d attach pic but I don’t see how. Enjoy your videos bc although I’ve been a dog owner my whole life, these r my first Great Danes! Mine is mostly white and my daughters is black and white speckled (you can tell I don’t know the jargon). Here’s to enjoying the journey, stay safe and be well from TX!

I would recommend she's with covered or protected toes. You will get stepped on often. They tend to try and stop you with their version of the " mom safety arm" move.

Thanks for your helpful new video! I have just one question: our Great Dane, now 5 months old, likes other dogs VERY much and pulls the leash very hard to get to the other dogs. I can't seem to distract him at those moments. Do you have any tips to handle this kind of situations? Normally he walks very nicely on the leash!

How do you get your Great Dane from being afraid of the rain and thunderstorms. Another of my dogs is afraid of the vets and panics when they put a cone collar on him had to take it off immediately before he hurt himself. Any hints on these problems?

Hello Zach, and Gus. I’m wondering about Gus’ beautiful grey coloring. Is she what is referred to as a blue Great Dane? We had a beautiful black Great Dane (Apache Tear... named for beautiful black obsidian volcanic glass rocks.) years ago and she was such a wonderful beloved pet and we’re considering acquiring another Dane. And, I love Gus’ coloring! Thanks so much!!

We just adopted a beautiful harlequin Great Dane. He is not trained to sit, stay or not pull while walking. Can I train him or do I need a professional? He is supposed to be an adult but he acts like a puppy.

Space in the kitchen and eating areas. Danes get tall and if it's not prevented early you'll loose a lot of food from counter and table surfing ( snatching food off of surface)

How you train your Dane is up to you, the important thing is that you train them early and often! Once they’re well-trained, pulling is not an issue
