ei can come out without the shogun, she is inside the shogun but can come out as her own body, the shogun is a puppet and the current leader of inazuma, while ei is only the electro archon. the shogun is not a shadow, it is her puppet/vessel
No she has no body her body is decayed she is literally in the sword (wich is why in the demo it fades from ei to the sword) she created shogun to rule inazuma in her steed while she was IN the sword she placed her conciseness in the sword itself (wich is yae miko tells her she's the one that taught her how to do that) but after the inazuma archon quest they now can switch bodies but since it's still the shoguns body she can refuse ei possessing it like in the 2nd part of her story quest

Seeing as her sister won the archon war becoming inazumas first archon (the archon war was over 3000 years ago I am pretty sure, ganyu’s age is being used here) meaning since ei and her twin the original archon of inazuma are the same age ei is around 3500 at the least so yeah ei is older than Xie Lian who is likely a baby god compared to her

Didn't Ei transfer her consciousness into the sword / musho ishin or smth - she can possess the puppet, no? I might be wrong tho
