What always gets me is how little Wen Kexing cares about his own life as long as he can keep Zhou Zishu's life and heart safe. Just rewatching (yet again... I am such a lost cause) the show and those scenes still hit me every time. His desperation is often heartbreaking.

No one probably cares anymore, but he isn't dead simply because he knows that A-Xu will not stay alive if he is gone. Zhou already proved that, basically killing himself after thinking Kexing was gone. There is a theory that Baiyi pranked them because this manual only works if both sides love each other. That's why it didn't work for him and Xuan's mother. She loved her late husband and died during the cultivation. And to be fair: the way Baiyi is in the series it's pretty much his style not telling Kexing both of them will survive to see if he still would do it.
