Harry was The Beatles' favorite contemporary artist for awhile & was John Lennon's best friend, enabler, party beast and bar fighter during his split from Yoko Ono & beyond. The two of them & Keith Moon shared a house in L.A. for a time & the drug & alcohol-fueled shenanigans on Sunset Strip were legendary, being banned from many clubs. Would've killed mere mortals. I hope you explore Nilsson more, he's a BIG favorite of mine ("Everybody's Talkin' At Me!")
@@melaniesweeten5401 the story of the making of that album is an amazing train wreck of a struggle to get through. The drugs, alcohol, failing to show up, shitty playing, etc, etc all combined to almost put John in the hospital or asylum trying to finish up the production on his own. Check out the legendary stories, lol.
@@chetcarman3530 I love Harry for his stuff, but also his Beatles collaborations. I have the Pussy Cats album as well as his soundtrack to Son of Dracula with Ringo
Check out his clever "version" of You Can't Do That in which he mashes together lyrics from various Beatles songs and concludes with the line "Strawberry Beatles Forever". Jump Into The Fire and Spaceman (I think Ringo played drums on that one) are couple other favorites of mine.
A blast from the past! This was on the radio when I was in school, and we'd all be breaking out in our best Nilson voices. One thing I never understood was, the cure is to do the same thing again that caused the problem? Silly stuff, but fun!
I played this to grandchildren on the way back from school when they were all glum. Changed the mood completely. Then they all joined in. Now I get it for them every few years and they are totally into it, full of joy and jigging about like maniacs. 😅
Anyone remember the song "Me and My Arrow" 1971 from the animated film "The Point" ? The story and film score was pure Nilsson magic. Ringo Starr and Dustin Hoffman had speaking parts in this smart and thought provoking film.
One of my favorite singers! I am a senior, but have been listening to him since I was in junior high. He could have been a superstar, but refused to do live concerts and rarely did tv. There is a great documentary about this mad genius (free on UA-cam) called Who is Harry Nilsson and Why Is Everybody Talking About Him?
I'm a huge Nillson fan. According to the movie "Practical Magic" you play it when you are making pitchers of Margaritas. Lol No one ever mentions this song, but I think Lex would really love "The Lottery Song" by him.
This was a big radio hit, and we all loved to sing along. It's probably impossible for you to really imagine turning on the radio and this comes out of a top-40 station, everyone from your grandma to your friends at school knowing and singing this silly song.
Yep, and it's perfect as that. I can remember a small party once at my best friends house where it started to get a little boring as everyone was just sitting around listening to the usual hard rock and ballads and getting complacent. Maybe it was the beer or the weed but I put this on and started doing some goofy dance and the whole room cracked up and soon everybody was up off there feet just grooving to it and we were partying good after that.
Nilsson would do that often. I remember listening to Son of Schmilsson and hearing him belch at the beginning of a song ("Long ago. Far away, *burp* Excuse me"). Also did a commercial for RCA Records in the middle of the album.
Love watching Lex catch the groove ! Harry Nilsson was very popular in the 70’s & this song was a big hit back in the groovy 1970’s , put this song on at a party & no one stayed still !! 🥥💃🕺
I love Harry Nilsson. My parents got me into him when I was a kid. I felt like listening to him and I saw you guys just did this reaction not too long ago. I love this song. ♥️ I just listened to “Without You”. Of course, He did his version before Mariah Carey did hers. Have you ever heard of Leon Redbone? I love him too. One of my favorite songs of his is called “Lazy Bones”. I love all kinds of music. I always have. Lex, I love your laugh. You are adorable! Brad, You are too! God Bless you guys! 🙏🏻♥️😊🎶✌🏻🇺🇸
Good luck finding someone to react to Leon Redbone! He covered the early great American songbook better than anyone. Saw him in concert twice, and he was hilarious. He introduced me to so many wonderful songs. Diddy Wah Diddy, Sweet Sue, Up a Lazy river etc.
If you haven't watched the Amazon Prime movie about Harry, watch it. Very educational. He was a master of overdubbing back when that was a new thing, and on records like this he was actually singing all the different parts himself! Had a great voice and was a phenomenal songwriter.
Harry was a genius, and had a tremendous voice and wonderful sense of humor. I'll suggest THE MOST WONDERFUL WORLD IN THE WORLD, REMEMBER (from the Son of Schmilsson album), THE MOONBEAM SONG, JUMP INTO THE FIRE, SPACEMAN, and WITHOUT YOU.
Harry Nilsson was a true original. 'One' (is the loneliest number) might be his best known but the dude was all over the place. I like Me and My Arrow personally. He was also John Lennons lost weekend drinkin' buddy. So.. there's that.
You hit it perfect with it putting you in a silly mood. I was twelve in the early 70's, and my friend and I would sing this song a cappella everywhere just to be silly. That brought back childhood memories.
This song by Nilsson was released in 1971. It was used in the 1998 film "Practical Magic" starring Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Diane Weist, Stockard Channing, and Aidan Quinn. It is a fantasy mystery about two sisters and their aunts who have magical powers.
The video to this is awesome! In gorilla suits playing instruments. Nilsson Schmilsson one of the best albums of the period. Classic, fantastic examples of how great a vocalist he was!
I think I still have the single of it on 45 (that's how old I am.) As for a mood, Coconut set the scene for "midnight Margaritas" in the movie Practical Magic. Also, this song has no chord changes; it's all in C7
I remember hearing Casey Kasem talking about this Song on American Top 40 Show when the song was new. Popular song who’s Lyrics pierced the American Lexicon. It’s Creativity that allows someone to repeat the same thing over and over, yet still entertain & hold your attention.
You should also consider “Jump Into the Fire” from the same album and all the rest are goods songs also…”Gotta Get Up”, “Diving Along”. I’ve playing this album so many times I can almost remember the order!
We stayed with my grandma in the summertime and one summer we drove her nuts singing this song over and over and adding our own little twists of bird calls and other silliness.
This was on the radio a lot when I was a kid... me and my sister loved singing along in the car... simple enough for kids to follow along, plus the voice is really silly...
Considered a Novelty song.. a Dr. Demento favorite.. I loved it as a kid..still do. Nillson has another somewhat silly song called "Daybreak", which features Ringo Starr... it is from a Vampire's point of view...
i was all Harry's voices and guitar, this song was weird but funny as hell back in the day, you play it at parties and everyone sang, maybe even a Conga Line Dance.
Lol 😂 this reactin is 6 am for me and has put a silly grin on my face that will last all day thanks for the reaction and great start to the day! So definitely a song to listen to in the morning after work or anytime! 💕😂😂
Nilsson was a gift! I'll recommend a few more of my favorite songs of his that others haven't already listed: Gotta Get Up (excellent morning song!), 1941, Think About Your Troubles, The Moonbeam Song.
Per Songfacts this popular novelty song from Nilsson finds a girl in tummy trouble after drinking a concoction of lime and coconut. She calls her exasperated doctor in the middle of the night, who suggests she take a little of the hair of the dog that bit her. Nilsson wrote the word "coconut" on a matchbook during a vacation in Hawaii, thinking it would make a great lyric for a song. When he returned home to Los Angeles, he found the matchbook while he was driving down the freeway and wrote the song in his car. Coca-Cola put a spin on the lyrics for an ad campaign promoting Coca-Cola with Lime, saying "You put the lime in the Coke, you nut."
This has got to be one of the quirkiest songs I ever heard. It was featured in the movie "Practical Magic". Do yourselves a favor and dig into Harry Nilsson's other songs. "Without You", "Everybody's Talkin'" and "Me and My Arrow" are the ones I remember best. He also sang the theme song to the 60s classic sitcom "The Courtship of Eddie's Father". If you're looking for a fun novelty song to react to, I suggest "The Name Game by Shirley Ellis. Fun reaction!
I love the theme song to “The courtship of Eddie’s Father”! I didn’t know it was Harry Nilsson but now playing it and “Without You“ in my mind I can hear the similarity in the voice.

Harry Nilsson? Jump Into the Fire! The bass is on fire from the beginning. The drum solo in the middle is amazing. We CAN make each other happy. 😁
That was in the helicopter scene in Goodfellas.
