    I agree. I play a Selmer Soloist on alto and now a Link or Van Doren on tenor. Non are expensive mouthpieces. Just bought a soprano, and so got a Selmer soloist mouthpiece. New to soprano, so will see how it goes. As a relative newb, I am all for trying different mouthpieces to see what suits you. I also subscribe to getting a decent instrument to learn on. I went from a Vito ( MIJ by Yamaha) to a Yamaha YAS-26 to a Yanni 901A. Love the Yanni, so easy to play, great sound, and a keeper. My Tenor is an Antiqua, supposedly a copy of a Selmer balanced action. Plays nicely. Always fascinating to listen about other players journey in music.

    For tenor I use a Theo Wanne Slant Sig 8 with Vandoren ZZ 3, and for alto I use a JodyJazz HR* 7M with Rigotti Gold 3M

    This is a tad late, but my current tenor mouthpiece is a JodyJazz HR*. I believe it is based off of a vintage rubber link, but at $200 its a great alternative to the D'Addario. It plays much darker for me (which I like.)

    I have only ever had 5 mouthpieces. I play alto and started on a Gear4Music alto and started on a Yamaha 4C and Rovner Dark ligature, the "My first mouthpiece upgrade" from sax.co.uk about 5 months in I replaced it with a Yamaha YAS-280, much better quality. I then sold the Yamaha 4C that came with the YAS-280 and I got a Meyer 6M thinking it would improve my sound. It didn't as such as the tip was too wide for me to control and found it projected a bit too much. I also accidentally scraped the outside of the barrel with the rough edge of the stock ligature. Still managed to sell it for £20 less than I bought it for on eBay despite the scratches.
    Decided I needed a narrower tip and got a Selmer S80 C** instead and got it with a Rovner Light Ligature. I found the Rovner ligatures dampened the sound a bit much and sold my original Yamaha 4C and Rovner Light Ligature and bought a Francois Louis Ultimate Brass Ligature that fits Selmer hard rubber mouthpieces and got 3 different plates for it. I preferred the ligature with the brass plate and Legere Studio Cut Reeds as this setup is a bit resistant to play which I need, and it gave me the control I wanted and a dark full sound with a bit of resonance the Rovners didn't give me.
    I just wish the ligature was smoother finished without any slightly rough bits as I scraped the sides of the Selmer S80 putting on the ligature and accidentally scraped the table with the ligature plate and found a small chip on the edge of the mouthpiece tip, so may have to get a new Selmer S80, this time in possibly a D tip.
    While I had the Selmer, I also got a JodyJazz HR* 7M, tried it and found it too hard to control, so was able to return it to where I bought it. I settled on a JodyJazz HR* 6M and love the sound and how freeblowing it is. It is brighter than the Selmer, but not a bright or dark mouthpiece, but the tip is a little wide for me, so I am working my way up to playing it when my embouchure has gotten stronger. I have found my 2 favourite mouthpieces so far or will have when I have sorted the Selmer S80 issues. I would like to try the JodyJazz DV or DV NY, but they are a bit too expensive for me.

    How do you only have 9000 subs!? Your vids are SO well made, and everyone can see how much effort you put into them! Much love! Will be recommending you to all my saxophone buddies!

    Please do a review on both Selmer concept mouthpieces for our Alto and Tenor and the new Claude Delangle alto mouthpiece from Selmer. The materials it is made from a rather interesting. Thanks for what you are doing Dan I enjoyed listening to your son learning the trumpet. He had a bit of the miles Davis posture. You'll have to buy him a red trumpet! Dan. God bless you all. Bill. You never stop the mouthpiece journey; searching for the mouthpiece holy grail. I have about half a dozen for my baris. Every year or so I get enticed into buying another. For a while they usually blow reasonably well (except the Vandoren V16 B9 - never again will I trust a UA-cam video by Denis DiBlasio) depending on which horn I play. But after a while I always seem to end up on my main one (Runyon Quantum Delrin) and wish I had never bought the others. Sounds like your first tenor was as bad as mine - a Chinese Parrot.

    As you had an HR Link for years and broke it rather than gave it up, and then went on to metal link. Where do you stand on the HR v Metal debate?

    • @DanForshaw
      @DanForshaw  6 років тому +2

      Given that my two were different models, it's difficult to compare them like for like...BUT I do find that metal mpcs have more resistance than the HR (metal need softer reeds) and I get closer to the sound I want with a metal link...(but then you have to ask, is this because I spent my formative years on a metal link and therefore, find that an easier piece to get my sound?)

      Maybe you are also more conditioned to the metal link's dimensions. I have found if you change mouthpiece that creates an initial barrier.and it took me about 3 weeks to comfortably cross over to my present model. Not sure about the material though, but I find metal has slightly more edge.

    the only advantage i had when buying my 300 euro secondhand sax was that i got a fantastic berg larsen mouthpiece that in itself was worth 600 euro, i bought my sax from a person who didn't anything about saxophones and mouthpieces, luckily i bought it, it's a great mouthpiece and easily my favorite
