I love Gibraltar and we visit regularly. Fascinating, beautiful views from the rock and a place to totally relax. Have never had any problems flying in but bad weather can make landing difficult and some flights are diverted to Malaga. The short runway and potential for strong cross winds means that only certain experienced pilots can fly there.
Man i climbed the rock and dined in the restaurant at the top after walking the Mediterranean walk. this is such a beautiful place to just relax for a couple days before taking a ferry into North Africa. Always hot and barely ever rains. I stayed on the spanish side right next to border control. So beautiful
I have landed a Boeing 737 many times at Gibralter airport and don't consider it dangerous. The road crossing only caused me problems once when the trafic lights on it failed and I had to climb away from 600ft and circle round the rock and make another approach. They had got the police out to close the road this time. Strong winds from the south causing eddies round the rock can close the airport. Its a while since I retired and I don't know if the Spanish are still doing their best to make things harder.
I was there 2 years ago, it's pretty cool standing on the roadside watching planes arriving/departing. I flew there with the excellent but sadly now defunct Monarch.
Hey... We love your videos of the Gibraltar airport! Would it be okay if we used a few clips for our airports story and credit your channel in the footage and description?
Prestwick Airport in Scotland used to be like this many years ago. Look at an aerial shot of the airport and you can still see where Main Street, Monkton used to cross over the runway.
I was stationed in ATC a few years ago and you need to be in Gib in February to get the full meaning of dangerous approach when you get wind whipping over the rock. However, since the 09 has been flattened out, know coming in over Spain that has changed the whole level of danger to this airport.
It's exactly what they're doing right now : They build an underpass at the very eastern end of the runway. But it's not yet finished. You can see it under construction in google earth/maps.
There are spikes placed on the road when it is closed to stop anyone trying to get through. Pedestrians trying to get past the barrier will be stopped (forcibly if necessary) by police who man each closed entry point
Check out Google Maps to see where they are building an underpass at the eastern threshold of the runway for vehicular traffic. Pedestrians will still walk across the runway when it opens. The runway was built during WW2 for bombers and fighters when the surrounding land was just open space. Since then the towns have been built right up to the runway and the traffic volume across the runway is massive hence the need to retrospectively build an underpass.
here in the philippines, baguio loakan airport is also a dangerous airport, its where most people there jog and start their day by taking pictures on planes
You won't see very many though. It's not exactly 'busy', they used to close down the terminal between flights - not sure if they still do but I might find out when I land there this March.
I lived in Gib.in the Eurotowers apartments for a year 1993-1994. Am sad to see the Euro flag is among the Union Jack and the Gib flag. When I was there there was a huge union jack on the top of the rock where it belongs. I know the airport (which is a RAF airfield) was a lot more dangerous in the 70s when General Franco (the Spanish dictator) would not let planes fly over Spain.
