Hi Everyone! I've gotten a lot of questions about how the surface of this board holds up over time and if the smoothness goes away. I noticed after a few months, the surface wasn't as smooth in some parts and after some research, this was my solution to quickly renew the board and restore some of that smoothness. If you're interested, here is how I renewed my board: ua-cam.com/video/un92k6Q7X6A/v-deo.html
You are absolutely genius!!!!!!! My housemate and I were literally about to go buy one for $300+ dollars today and coincidentally, I stumbled upon your video. You literally saved us so much $ !!!
This video seriously deserves more views. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I know how hard a simple video like this can be to shoot and edit. My wife and I wanted a white board for a while, however we didn't want to over spend. This worked so well. We just installed ours today. Looks amazing! Thank you!!
Cinna Mon you’re so sweet, thank you! Unfortunately, I can’t take credit for this project. I got the idea after watching and researching ideas on UA-cam and Reddit. I linked some videos that really helped me with this project in my description 😊
So helpful! I followed your steps this am and am so happy with the results. I had to have the sheet cut in half so it would fit in my car but the PVC trim covered any ragged edges perfectly. Thank you for sharing!!!
Never stand in a rolling chair. A co-worker got to go have surgery after falling from her chair doing the same thing. Ladders are cheaper than emergency room visits. I still love the ideas she has and will be making one for my wife who is now teach from home.
First of all, thanks! I am moving into an older classroom that only has a small dry erase board and a chalk board. As I will be teaching math, I'll need more whiteboard space. I plan on doing this for my classroom. Also, I have used those command strips for a 36" x 48" whiteboard in my classroom. The instructions tell you to hang up the board on the wall just as you showed in the video. However, after a few minutes, you're supposed to separate the board from the wall again and let the wall side of the command strips dry for 30 mins to an hour. That may be why yours didn't hold during summer. I've had these strips hold up year-round in a classroom in FL.
I think this DIY board would be great in your new classroom. I recently uploaded a video about how to maintain the board as the smooth finish on it does gradually get worse with time but if it is maintained, you shouldn't have any issues. I didn't even think about taking the board down after sticking the command strips up to let it set! That is such a great point and I'm sure that contributed to mine not working as well! Thank you so much! I will keep that in mind for the future. Many thanks for watching! 😊
thank you! I didn't realize homedepot and lowes sell these sheets. It's $42 up here in Canada, but you saved me a ton! I'm a woodworker so building a frame and backer is trivial. The whiteboards online and instore at staples or somewhere like that is insane!
I'm so glad you found this helpful! I definitely wasn't the first to come up with this idea but found it helpful myself and wanted to share. Another thing you can try is whiteboard paint. This is something I have been curious try myself but haven't had the chance to do it yet. Thank you so much for watching! Wishing you the best with your project! 😊
Do you have a link to the board you used? I'm in Canada as well! On homedepot.ca it is only coming up with one small version available, like 2x2 or something.
@@b7fLuid yeah thanks! I found that one, I just couldn't find any at home depot but am getting the lowes one! They don't have many trim options it seems though, did you use any specific trim?
@@jaxzondrew9624 There aren't any options for this. It's an 8x4 sheet but you can always ask them to cut it to the size you want. There's no charge for that. Obviously, you're limited to the size of your mode of transportation so figure out the dimensions of your vehicle before you ask them to cut it.
Thanks! This is good. I like how it looks. Anyone can install it with the right tools. I had to use an angle grinder to shape the corners of the plastic borders into neat angles. After measuring the LxW, I used the backend of a screwdriver to bang the borders onto the Dry Erase. It was pretty easy to mount using 3M gorilla mounting tape. Hey I know this is 5 years old but I just installed mine 4x8 full size with every accessory you suggested in my bedroom and wanted to thank you for creating this video and your idea behind it 🙏🙏
Thank you so much. This is exactly what I was looking for. If I may add to your tip, glue magnets to the backside of your board as a place holder for your markers with a magnet attached to them.
I've made several panels like this using Lowe's and also Home Depot whiteboard. They are okay but not great in the long run. Still worth doing for my application though. The problem with these cheaper panels is that the coating is not very durable compared to the material used to manufacture actual whiteboards. It does not hold up very long and the coating wears thin pretty quick from just erasing. Rather quickly it gets to the point where it becomes very difficult to erase and starts to leave a "ghost" even after wiping with whiteboard cleaner. Eventually the coating gets to the point where the substrate starts to become visible as the coating wears thinner and thinner. Then I just re-purpose the panels for something else like shelf liners or whatever.
MrIhadanaccount I’ve noticed that also. I found that WD40 works really well to maintain the finish of the board. I apply a very very thin layer every month or so and it keeps the surface smooth. I am thinking about looking into whiteboard paint also for when the board becomes too worn for a layer of wax. Thank you for sharing your experience! I’m always curious to see how this turns out for others who have tried it 😊
I was searching for options for a white boat. This is the second Vedio I watched. So I no need to search any more. I'm expecting to make one. Thank you for sharing.

ragnarocking unfortunately, it isn’t. That would be amazing though. I’m sure there is a way to get it to be by attaching a metal or magnetic panel behind the board but I haven’t done any research into it so I’m not sure. If you do find a solution, I would love to know! 😊
@@QPlife magnetic paint! ua-cam.com/video/vuLoonhzoY4/v-deo.html Though if it were just painted on standard drywall, the texture would probably be less than ideal for smooth text or drawing. Maybe coating a smoother surface would work - such as a HomeDepot whiteboard or something with a similar texture.
Thank you for posting this. It realy works and it costed me only 22$ to buy all the stuff. They advised me at home depot to buy some kind of paint that helps to make the whiteboard even better
I’m so glad this worked for you and it cost you even less! That is a really good idea to get the paint to make it even better. I am planning on adding a layer of wax to mine in a month or so to freshen it up a bit. Thank you so much for watching! 😊

I have to constantly write things down quickly as possible, otherwise I just get frustrated and forget about it. I would need like a 16 x 8 foot board. This is a life saver. I thought I was going to go crazy from using notepads.
Hello ! Thanks for the tutorial ! One question though: The whole thing kinda feels a bit heavy for command strips. Did it hold up fine for you so far ?
So sorry for the delayed response! Hope I didn't miss the boat on this. It did when we first put it up. Unfortunately, we live in Texas and my office gets direct sunlight in the evenings and it can get very hot in the summer and the adhesives didn't hold up to this heat. Instead of buying a £500+ projector screen I can have a custom projector screen that is super easier to clean... This video was great!!! I live in the UK so I hope that B&Q or Homebase have anything like Home depot
I think I'll cut the length down by a couple inches so the trim pieces can be mitered. Thanks! My son wants one for his apartment and I was a little freaked out at the thought of spending hundreds of dollars.
Hey! This was amazing!!! Thanks for helping us save so much money. We are struggling to get the cap on the white board without ruining it. What are the tips?
Sara White I have considered it and am thinking about using it for an upcoming project. I didn’t do it for this project because we are renting and I didn’t want to have to repaint when we move. My fiancé painted a wall in his former office using whiteboard paint and it actually turned out really well, especially if you don’t mind the texture or the walls
Iann Wu that’s the only tricky part with this project. We were lucky that it barely fit in the bed of our truck and we only lived 10 minutes away from the store. Home Depot also has trucks available for rent or you can see if the store offers delivery. Another option is to have the home improvement store cut the board in half or 3rds.
@@QPlife Thanks for the tips Quynh! I went to Homedepot to check the board and they do have scheduled delivery available. Quick question, I saw from your other video that command strips won't hold under hot temperature. Do you think 10 strip locations will hold the board if my room is cool? Or would you still recommend using mirror hold plates? Thanks!
This is great - thank you! I’m thinking about adding a piece of plywood on the back to make it stronger, and adding something to make it magnetic...do you or anyone have some advice?
Devon Peters so glad you found this helpful. I’ve heard other commenters suggesting magnetic paint but then you would have to repaint the surface also. I personally haven’t tried magnetic paint myself but am considering doing a project with it in the future.
Quynh Pham They have something call Good Hangups that was shown on Shark Tank. Supposed to stick to anything . Some sort of sticker you stick on the wall etc . and a magnet attaches to it .Google it ! Hope this helps !
About to start a coding bootcamp... Whiteboards, especially standing whiteboards the size I'd need are running anywhere from 150-300 USD.... Thanks for saving my wallet and giving me groceries a few more weeks ;). You rock! In return maybe I'll make an app that does the same for you eh? We'll see :D.
You should've used the strips vertical. Physics:). Most force goes down. Sadly my Stores doesn't have marker boards. Glhf, already looked some of your newer Vids.
Hey Quynh! I literally just spent $100+ on a smaller board but didn’t realize this works! Question for ya.. I felt the “white hardboard” at Home Depot but didn’t quite feel the same. Does that whiteboard feel like an actual whiteboard or is it slightly rougher on the surface?
Pedro Peralta Jr. this one actually feels like a white board. I have the link to the actual product in my description. I asked one of the workers there and he pointed this one out to me so I’m not sure if there are other types of boards there
@@QPlife Yeah I keep seeing that one on their site, but went to home depot and something felt off lol Thank you for the response I appreciate it and keep killing it on youtube!
Thank you for your video, I have a question that is it easy to take the board out without ripping the wall because of the command stripes ? Or how can you move the board out without damaging the wall ?
If you use the velcro command strips, you should be able to slowly peel the board off the wall without any damage. You will probably need to ask someone to help you though since it is such a big board. The idea is the one part of the velcro command will stay on the wall and the other part is on the board. Since the board is pretty flexible, you can pull it off kind of like a sticker (one command strip at a time). I also want to add that the command strips don't work well if the room they are in gets very hot. Sorry if my explanations are super confusing lol. Let me know if you have any questions 😄
Thanks for sharing this. One question to Pham and to anyone already tried this - how good is it to write on the board using standard dry erase markers compared to usual commercial boards. Is it easy to erase? are there any ghosting problems. Appreciate your time.
Sekhar K I find that it is very comparable to a regular whiteboard. I use EXPO markers and haven’t had any issues with ghosting. The one thing I will say is that it has lost some of its smoothness over time but I’ve heard this is normal for whiteboards also. I am going to try adding some wax to it in the future to see if I can renew the surface. I will do an update video when I do and let you know how it goes. I hope this helps! Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you! I did when I had the strips which worked well to hold up the board until mid-summer when it got really hot in my office. Hi Quynh, since it's such a huge board, any economical suggestion on how we can transport that back home? I don't see it fit in my car at all.
Thanks!
Great video! I always wanted a big whiteboard just like this! I will try it at home 😊
Quynh Pham wonderful - thanks for the guidance. I’ll likely not go that route for now, but may add plywood to the back.
Quynh Pham They have something call Good Hangups that was shown on Shark Tank. Supposed to stick to anything . Some sort of sticker you stick on the wall etc . and a magnet attaches to it .Google it ! Hope this helps !
This is great with so much value!
Thank you! 😊
Just did this today , worked perfect!!!
So glad this worked for you also! Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Not bad! I think I'll try this. Thanks a lot!
Excellent idea!!
Was thinking about buying one of these for homemade projector screen
Thanks Quynh!
Cool! I love that video! Thanks for the info!
You should've used the strips vertical. Physics:). Most force goes down. Sadly my Stores doesn't have marker boards. Glhf, already looked some of your newer Vids.

Thank you SO much for this awesome idea!
Is it magnetic? If not can you get a magnetic one?
Great job by the way!
Awesome I’m returning all my stuff. I was about to make a magnetic dry easer board. Is there a way to make this magnetic!
This was so helpful thank you!!!
I asked one of the workers there and he pointed this one out to me so I’m not sure if there are other types of boards there
@@QPlife Yeah I keep seeing that one on their site, but went to home depot and something felt off lol
Thank you for the response I appreciate it and keep killing it on youtube!
This is great, nice solve!
So does it still work? Does it stain? Specifically when you leave marker on it for a long time?
Yes
Needed this to memorize the biochemistry pathways, thanks
That's so smart. Thanks
Hand sanitizer to clean possibly very thin coat of WD 40.
Hey! Any idea how we can get this in the UK? I can't get those panels or get the right answer off google for what material it is
Thank you!! This saved me a lot of money! We just did this today! Love it!!
This was really helpful! Thank you for sharing!
Love this!
nice giant board
Great tutorial! Do you feel the strips when writing?
Thank you! I did when I had the strips which worked well to hold up the board until mid-summer when it got really hot in my office. I have since remounted the board using mirror mounts and it is much sturdier. I think if I was in a cooler climate, it would have been fine with the command strips.
Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching! 😊
@@QPlife Thanks for the answer 🙌
How thick were the trimming you used?
Great ! Idea ...... your a Genius ;-)
Nice ...just what my wife needs for her daycare
