And now (21 May 2023) Dr Evadne Hinge is gone too. Although they were larky and saucy, Hinge & Bracket never mocked the music itself in their performances. There's a fine version by them of this song on UA-cam. Maybe not in quite the same league as these two, but they play it absolutely straight.

Having a nostalgia morning as I am writing my memoirs. Yes, a favourite of mine too on Family Favourites. I don't care if they are out dated, they are part of a time when people were real and not obsessed by machines and money.

she was the best grandmother and female role in my life, I remember coming home after school and having Marmite (Lizbeth Webb) have me stand in front of her for hours singing and doing old cockney rhymes together. I always tear up when hearing her sing, I wish she could see me now and wonder how proud she'd be to see the young woman I've become
Will always be in my heart and my fondest childhood memories

Hi Olivia, I wonder whether you know that your grandma replaced the 19 year old Adele Leigh who accepted a role at the Royal Opera House instead? This is the from the Original Cast Recording (one of only 4 songs from the show), the company recorded a condensed version of the show for the BBC during its run (now available on CD). A lavish BBC TV production was screened on 28th October 1956 (sadly no copy survives) and there was a small scale production at the Kings Head Islington in the 1970s and a major revival at Sadlers Wells Theatre in the 1980s (both of which I saw). More recently I saw an acceptable performance by the Worthing Operatic Society, but I fear it would now be considered too dated to put on. Undoubtedly the finest music Vivian Ellis ever wrote, even better than Coronation Scot!

1947. I was three years old then and as I get older now the memories of my childhood become stronger and when I hear things like this it brings back the times after I started school in 1949 when because I lived just around the corner I was able to come home at lunch time and my Mother was either ironing or doing some other household chore and the wireless would be on and she would be singing along to the music. Happy Days.

A girl sang this beautifully at my uncle and aunts wedding 1946. My dad and two uncles had just come home safely after the war and the whole family was sitting on a sunny veranda overlooking ocean in Portrush. It was my first time that day to have a meal in an hotel or be in a car. I will always remember how happy we were that day.

In 1947 we had real austerity, not the modern version, yet Ellis and Herbert could produce wonderful shows like 'Bless the Bride' to cheer us all up, which they did. Long may they be remembered!

My mother played "CHARLOTTE PATIENCE" in the original 1947 production at the Adelphi Theatre. Her stage name was PAMELA CARROLL, her real name Pamela Chick. My mother was on the stage from a very young age 4, but Bless the Bride was the last production she was in. She met my father whilst doing the show, married him six months later and never set foot on stage again. Pity, as I think she was very talented - I have her press cutings which I treasure. For those of you who have heard of the Australian actree Queenie Ashton, she was my mother's aunt, sister to my mother's mother.

It reminds me of my childhood during the 1950s and I thought I'd probably never hear it again until a chance listening to Paul Temple on the radio. What a wonderful collection of comments here! I'm too young to remember this the first time round (I'm only 68) but I did meet Vivian Ellis a couple of times in the 1980s when I worked in music publishing. Very pleasant man. He was a huge name in British musical theatre in his heyday. It's a shame that there are no complete original cast recordings, they just didn't make them in those days.

Lizbeth Webb, a very special lady in the history of British musical theatre. Around 1987 i was participating in a singer's masterclass at Martel in France.
