      James, is there anything different you would do after learning from this five years of growing your food forest?
      Also how much land are you using for this food forest?

    James, more videos please we need stress relief from the reality of our state of country. Working on building our food forests is just about the best thing to think about.
    Planning where to put an apple tree seems so small when families are being ripped apart but maybe growing food for our communities may help in the future. God bless us all for what we have and what we don't.

    Demolishing my existing forest to create a food forest and plan to incorporate hugelkultur as well! So excited! These are the best videos, thank you so much for the tips, the guidance, encouragement and everything! Thanks to you sharing content in your amazing food forest, my husband if finally on board with it. He didn’t understand the concept and thought it was a stupid idea. He even wants to put in a real greenhouse!

    AMAZING ! THANK YOU THANK YOU! The documentation of your food forest project helped me explain to my family what I wanted to do. Seeing the transformation of your garden over the years helped me show them the possibilities for our own place and get them on board. I also learned how important it is to share the experience. We have four giant cottonwoods that are coming down and EVERY bit of them will be used on our small property. My neighbors thought I was nuts...so I shared your channel and Permaculture Homestead..they're less worried now. :-) Blessings and much appreciation!!!

    Beautiful! One problem I'm running into both before and after I retired, was the company that bought the apartments I lived in, increased the rules after I moved in, to the point that they wanted no potted plants even on my huge private patio. I moved of course, but my senior complex now has begun to institute more rules as well, trying to control what plants we can have on our patios. Has anyone else run into this? I'm in California.

    would you mind telling me what the size of the food forest is, and how many fruit trees (canopy layer) you have? Trying to figure out a good density for planting. permaculture recommends denser planting, but I like that you're able to walk through comfortably and have enough sunlight for the shrubs etc. how far did you space the trees that feel like they're working the best for you?

    What an amazing garden you have! I hope one day I can have something similar and eat garden fresh veggies/fruits everyday.
    I was wondering if your dog ever goes into your garden? I imagine the some of the fruits drop to the ground and can be eaten by the dog. If so, what measures do you take so your dog doesn't eat grapes off the ground? Only asking because I have a dog too and have decided not to plant grape vines. The sole reason being that my dog has the tendencies of a goat and would definitely eat any stray grape pieces.

    James, I was wondering where you first started in your knowledge of plants and permaculture!? You know what you're talking about and what you're doing and I was wondering how you got your start!

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  7 років тому +1

      I started with reading a few of Joel Salatins books, then went to Agricultural Testament by Sir Albert howard. Then got into Permaculture books and watched a lot of videos from Geoff Lawton and Sepp Holzer online. Then I read Sepp Holzers book and a number of other ones on permaculture. Then I got and read what most would call the Permaculture Bible, the book Bill Mollison wrote that he used to teach all his classes from, its in textbook form. Throughout that I have also been practicing what I was reading the past 5 years.
      Its been a great journey and I wouldn't have traded it for anything. Thank you for the kind words my friend. My advice to you though, start the reading and start the process of gardening now when the desire is strong, before it fades and may never come around again.

    • @nealvaughn2340
      @nealvaughn2340 7 років тому

      I'm midway through the Joel Salatin stage :D Have read two of his books and have a few chapters left in "You Can Farm" and have loved every second of them! I'll start dabbling in everything else for sure! Planted 5 comfrey splits recently that are taking off and started composting with grass clippings from my side yard business and wood shavings from my woodturning. Amazing stuff, "DIYing" isn't it!?
      I love that you are self taught! I've always been a "I should take a course" type person but here lately I've realized books and UA-cam are MORE than enough. I just need the "do it, screw it up, and try again" mentality to take a firmer hold.
      Keep up the great vids my man! You have a viewer from down here in Texas now!

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  7 років тому +1

      As long as you choose crops that are cold hardy and do your research you should be fine. Check out what Sepp Holzer did in a very cold climate. You can create small micro climates for warmer crops and plants to grow. Thanks for watching!

    How long and thick did you have the chips down before you planted the trees?

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  6 років тому

      4-6 inches for annuals. 6-8 inches for young fruit trees. 8-16 inches for mature fruit trees 😁😁

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  6 років тому

      I put the mulch down in the fall, then pull it back and plant into the dirt in the spring. Then bring the wood chip mulch back around the base of the trees

    Bro, have you ever air layered?

  • @quasiminimizerpde9284
    @quasiminimizerpde9284 6 років тому

    how long do you think you can maintain this level of production without ever adding wood chips ?

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  6 років тому +1

      it depends cause since I added wood chips for so many years I am building a thick beautiful soil which is packed with nutrition. And more importantly my perennials have grown so much that they now produce a lot of leaf drop and organic matter like sticks etc. These can be chopped and dropped and used to feed the system. So there will come a point when the system is sustainable. There will also come a point where the system is producing way more then it needs to support itself.
      It took work to get it started or "jumpstarted" in my case by adding a lot of organic matter in the form of wood chips, but in the long run it will be a sustainable system because it will produce more energy then it takes to create and sustain it.
      I choose to continue to add wood chips though, if I can do it then why not. Its like the option of getting more fertility and faster for free. To me its a no brainer.
