Scams are generally pretty rare, but when it happens to me I just recover the loss by putting up prices on great selling items by a small percentage. After a couple of months loss recovered.
My son and I are gearing up to start selling books live on whatnot and we aare both new to the selling game , I really appreciate your advice and have been watching your show since before you made the decision to sell full-time. Thanks
I rarely get bad feedback on eBay but when I do it's stupid things. I sold a factory sealed dvd of an old television show and the buyer gave me negative feedback -- said the show 'wasn't what he remembered as a kid' and complained about the editing. (??) One time I couldn't find the $5 sale item in my inventory and had a to cancel. I gave the buyer a huge apology, good feedback and a full refund and I still got negative feedback. There's some really crappy ppl out there.
Right before Christmas I sold around 25 raw books (mostly keys) on FB Marketplace. I gave my opinion on grades and the ones that were in rougher shape were G/VG. Some had water stains, rippling , ticks, etc. Lower grade books worthy of the grade but certainly the exceptions to mostly VF/NM for the rest. Shipped them out and buyer contacts upon receipt saying the lower grade ones were not what would accept and wanted a full refund. Threatened me that he was law enforcement and I was a fraudster. I thought this was a bit harsh but I fully refunded his money and he sent all the books back, and then gave me a horrible review saying I sold crap. My only bad review…
Once, many years ago i was selling my childhood Fireball Island game in eBay. It was worth a couple hundred bucks at the time. Some scammer claimed he bought it and wanted me to ship it. Of course he never even paid for it.
thank you for all of your videos. i use them to further educate myself on what to look for when hunting in the wild. i sit with pen and paper during your underrated key videos. and yes, thank you again for letting loose of your secret, valuable issues to memorize. keep hunting!
The most problems I've had is with bad sellers on eBay, so many comics shipped in manila envelopes no protection, missing pages, cutouts, too many to list. I've been selling comics on eBay for over 20 years, and you've even bought from me, I would put a problem definitely more on bad sellers than buyers. I can count on one hand the problem buyers I've had in the past couple of years, out of thousands of sales. I guess the bad tales get the views, the good tales are boring.
I’ve been prepping a lot of my collection to sell and I definitely don’t want to do anything online…what is your experience with doing flea markets? I live in NC and am considering setting up a table at our local flea markets here in the spring. Any tips for how I should approach?
Ebay, at least here in Australia, is completely on the side of the buyer. Case in point: a buyer who refuses tracked postage, claims that the comic was never sent and receives a refund. Ebay doesn't care about such obvious scams (ie theft) because they just want their exorbitant fees.
Used to sell a lot on EBay. Stopped selling on EBay completely, the bullshit buyers tried to pull was too much for me. (I got even with one but that's a long story) Ebay always sides with buyers no matter how ridiculous.
I took a year off and sold sports cards. All certified autos. I can’t tell you how many guys were “upset” that cards weren’t PSA 10 though they were not advertised as such and I always put a ton of pictures with the disclaimer this item is raw. And yes I’ve had people tell me they wanted full refunds but to keep the cards.
I buy on eBay a lot. Like more than half of my books comes from it. My bad experience was with an auction. What if? 105. First Spider-Girl. Made a starting bid for $10 knowing it would rise in the following days. It never happened. NOBODY else put any bid into it. I won it for $10. I was very happy and yeah, surprised too, but paid right away and waited for my book. A day later the seller contacted me claiming that he just could not find the book that he looked everywhere but it was misplaced. He placed a refund for my $10. I told him I did not believe his BS but Sadly could not do anything else. A week passed and I went directly to his page and what did I find? He had listed the same book again!
As a buyer the most common BS is a blurry pic and the assurance that "the book is impecable, in absolute perfect condition", only to be mid grade at best when more images are provided.
I mainly shop on eBay, and I know it’s not always easy for buyers either. However, over the past year, I’ve developed a set of rules for making purchases, and I stick to them. This approach has helped reduce my bad experiences to about 5-10%.
I was wondering why no raw when I was cruising your eBay shop today. Lol guess you answered that. I'm cool with it, you're always fair in the claim sales anyway.
As someone who is heavily involved in helping with IG claim sales for a major dealer (shout out my friends at Buzzard Bros. Comics), I've seen some doozies myself. There are some serious doofballs out there, and I'm not even talking about the outright criminals. I've rarely sold anything myself, but so far I've only had a couple of "annoying" experiences, and no actual theft. At some point though, I'll be selling regularly and making an actual effort. It's technically my retirement plan but you never know what might happen before I hit that age. I'm mentally preparing myself for the lackluster part of the comic community.
I’ve had some bad experiences with sellers on eBay, as well. Currently, a seller just disappeared after taking preorders. Many of us have paid for preorders and the seller ghosted hundreds of us. I had to get my credit card involved to fix it. The most annoying thing is that sellers will stuff raw comics in envelopes with no boards or bags and send them. I’ve had that happen 3 times. One was a pretty significant key. Surprisingly, the key came undamaged. There’s a bullshit tax as a buyer, as well.
My wife runs a successful ebay store, (no comics) she deals non stop drooling idiots on a weekly basis , she has a high 3 digit list of blocked buyers. I don't think I've ever actually sold a comic. I'm very much of a hoarder. once I've bought a comic, I can't bear to part with it. I'm glad I avoid having to deal with this kind of bullshit. although no disrespect to people who are sellers
When you deal with the public you’re liable to encounter just about any kind of dysfunction. Do what’s best for you always and don’t let them upset you. That’s how they win.
I got scammed just doing a favor for a guy. He lived in Canada and asked me to order and ship him a few wrestling shirts that wouldn't ship there. Paid in full before I ordered, no big deal. Months later I got a notice of a dispute from PayPal. Apparently he used his parents' card (he was an adult) without permission and they did a charge back. I showed the messages from him, explained my side. Ended up being out the money. On top of that a year later PayPal flagged for running a business from a personal account (I don't have a business) and permanently banned me.
I once sold the “Wolverine gets his adamantium back” issue for $0.99 at auction. I had only the one bid. I took a chance that it’d go higher and I lost. The real stinger though is the buyer wrote to me thanking me, telling me “you never see this book that low.” Urgh, I’m a fool.
Unrelated question: If I want to own all the individual issues that tell the whole story of Superman Red and Superman Blue from the late 1998s, could it be possible?
As someone who sold a part of his collection to James and had a wonderful and easy transaction, it's a shame to hear about the crappy people out there and those types of stories. One from me personally was a bowling ball that I sold on eBay. Clearly listed it as used with multiple pictures of the ball, fully drilled, and where the holes were and all of the span information. Once the guy received it, he messaged angry that the ball was not brand new and demanded a refund. Luckily eBay sided with me as a proactively opened a case against him after receiving those messages and knew where it was headed once I refused the refund. A shame people use transactions as a way to take advantage of others
I got scammed on a preorder as a buyer. The seller changed his username, I found him he lied and said he would send the items never did. Never do preorders on eBay.
Happened to me as well on Ebay, only lost $15 though. Preordered some ASM #1 Facsimile copies months in advance from a medium sized seller with like couple thousand positive feedback. Seller messaged me saying there was gonna be a delay(lot of delays because of Covid) and if I wanted a refund. I said no it's fine I can wait. Then he messages me back and starts telling me thank you and how it's a pain dealing with nagging customers and returns. Well couple months go by and that seller shut down his Ebay store and never sent my books, never refunded or messaged me again.
These people make me look like a saint when i forgot to pay you for a couple of weeks, i paid you though after i remembered i had to fill out your form. LOL. Seriously what an idiot with the JACK KIRBY signiture. Wish it had been me i would have loved to get that!!! And I had someone blatantly switch out a raw book on me on ebay. They straight asked for a picture of the back cover of the book. As soon as they get the book they send a picture with a crease straight across the back cover!! BS!!
I sold a 1954 perfectly sealed football pack, I listed it and stated that the gum is in pieces. The purchaser got it, and sent a return request because he said the gum was in pieces, ebay agreed with the purchaser. When I got it back, there was a tear in the package allowing the buyer to view the card, I told ebay this and they didn't care. I lost the sale and lost the sealed item so I couldn't sell it anymore. I didn't use ebay for years after. I've recently started selling again due to health issues making hard to get work only to find out ebay is only about resellers trying to scam and maximize deals even though I am a seller just trying to sell my property for what it's worth and not get scammed or lowballed.
Sorry to hear these stories However as a buyer I have been lied to numerous times by sellers as well VG books that had covers detached books mailed in envelopes no bag no board no cardboard and when messaging them ghosted
As a regular sell on ebay for comics and many other items. The problem is eBay totally protects the buyer, and does not care at all about the seller, and we are the one's making them money.
The problem is that people still keep selling on eBay as eBay is really the only big option out there. If people would just quit selling on eBay like a strike then eBay May Park up and listen more
I had a seller cancel on order that I placed and put as the reason "Buyer requested cancellation". I sent a message to the seller asking why they cancelled my order and never got a response...
That last story says a lot about the current market. It’s about getting one over or one-up on someone else in a transaction. The market is full of vendors vs vendors and far less “collectors” than people want to admit. Collect what you love, but don’t overpay. And INVEST in secured registered assets, not collectibles, especially if you don’t have a positive net worth.
years ago I ordered a small video game package from eBay for about $40 and it never arrived at my apartment even though the tracking said it did and eBay sided with the seller over me and I was out $40 & games I never recieved. (I found out later it was stolen by porch pirates, sadly)
Scamming happens both ways. Sellers over-grade and over-price often, buyers under-grade and will nickel and dime you. Its a free market, that's the way it works.

Thanks for the stories. I've sold a couple of raw books on ebay and I've always been concerned about selling on that site. I think when I finally decide to sell my collection off, I'll look for other options than ebay.
I call it the jerk tax. You have me come look at your collection. I make a fair offer. You say you want to shop it around. Lo and behold I was the best offer. Now you pay the jerk tax and my offer is now lower.
Seller cancel my 2 orders cus i got it for a very low price i won the bidding and cancel it without telling me. I was so upset i really like the item so bad. Keep messaging him but never response back. And then when i saw whats the reason of cancellation. he put it on ebay im the one who cancel it?? Omg. I was so shocked. I didn’t even mention anything about cancellation. Sad.😔
Ive had good experiences selling on Ebay. I dont make a killing so I dont rely on comics to make money. Buying Ive had some bad experiences on packaging and quality.
I was looking for a Secret Wars 8 newsstand and I found one on eBay he said it was a 9.4 so I was hesitant but I looked at it and thought looks awesome. So I bought it and when it came it had a huge stain on the back. Long story short I ended up with a 4.0 🤦🏿♂️ after paying $175 and emailed him and never heard back. 🤦🏿♂️🤬
I had a seller send me a low grade golden age Carl Barks book in an envelope and just a folder. No bag and board and not cardboard to keep it safe. Put a video up back in October about it. Yes it was low grade and cheap but Milton was on the way and this was barely protected.
I just got a golden age House of Mystery #7 recently in the mail from Denmark. Came in a flimsy bubble mailer, no bag & board, no cardboard at all, comic was just in a old plastic bag inside a loose bubble mailer. It was a little bent up but nothing a press can't fix.
@@beachrain8617 I had gotten a book sent to me in a cereal box once and I so wish I had recorded it because it sounds so ridiculous and made up. I had said something about it in the feedback and he responded with something like it was a cheap books with discounted shipping.
This is why I don't sell comics international. I sold Avengers #1 El Capitan Reprint to guy in Norway. He refused to pay shipping and wanted me to ship for free. When I refused to ship for free as it was going to cost $20 to ship which most of the value of the book at $30. My listing stated shipping was extra. The guy had a fit and refused to pay and left a negative review. #ebayevil
I’m always amazed at the number of just ordinary scumbags in the world. People with no moral compass whatsoever. This world needs a whole lot more Jesus in it.
As for Joe my response would be this a retail store just like a brick and mortar store if you want to get a refund you have to return it with receipt end of storey
eBay almost always sides with the buyer. Almost no matter how much proof you have. That’s why I stopped selling on there years ago. That and the bs fees.
Where there is a dollar to be made, they will try to make it. Honestly or dishonestly. It doesn't matter to them. I have very little faith in my fellow human being.
Im not sure if youve ever talked about this so im sorry if you have, but with all the scams selling raw books on ebay why dont you try whatnot? Just curious love the content!
So i have a numbered card to 10. Someone is selling my card for 4 times the amount. Im tempted to buy it, knowing they cant fulfill. I have the receipts haha
I don't know I had some sucess on Ebay. Last year I got a Amazing Spider-Man 238 newsstand for $20 no tattoos. But i see what your saying. Ebay is a mixed bag especially when it comes to selling.

This is why we cannot have nice things.
Oboy, I just can't wait to see what will happen to me while I'm selling my raw comics. I've been selling for 2 years and so far no problems...yet.
#ebayevil
artists used to sign the inside. when i was a kid don perlin signed the second appearance of moon knight for me. he signed the inside
All my autographs (around 50) are on bottom of first page
I’m always amazed at the number of just ordinary scumbags in the world. People with no moral compass whatsoever. This world needs a whole lot more Jesus in it.
One should be able to refuse a seller if they seem shady, without any dings on your account
What I would do to find a hidden signature in my books...
That's the name I give to Sticky goose
As for Joe my response would be this a retail store just like a brick and mortar store if you want to get a refund you have to return it with receipt end of storey
eBay almost always sides with the buyer. Almost no matter how much proof you have. That’s why I stopped selling on there years ago. That and the bs fees.
The fees are brutal
Ebay seller protection is definitely NOT better......
Where there is a dollar to be made, they will try to make it. Honestly or dishonestly. It doesn't matter to them. I have very little faith in my fellow human being.
Question, are you seeing more new customers due to the game marvel rivals?
Yes actually hahaha
Im not sure if youve ever talked about this so im sorry if you have, but with all the scams selling raw books on ebay why dont you try whatnot? Just curious love the content!
So i have a numbered card to 10. Someone is selling my card for 4 times the amount. Im tempted to buy it, knowing they cant fulfill. I have the receipts haha
Part of the business
Its because ebay doesn't give a fuck!
eBay sucks.
Avoid EBay
The chutzpah
How do you feel about whatnot?
I don't know I had some sucess on Ebay. Last year I got a Amazing Spider-Man 238 newsstand for $20 no tattoos. But i see what your saying. Ebay is a mixed bag especially when it comes to selling.
eBay always sides with the buyer unfortunately.
