Been building and flying model rockets since 1972. I have never tested a model built from a kit. I always assumed the manufacturer of the kit did, and if it was properly built, it was already properly balanced and ready to fly. I now design and build my own rockets. I always put talcum powder on the parachute before putting it in the rocket, to prevent the plastic from sticking to itself.
Used to fly those back in the day. i had Big Bertha, sidewinders, and others. The Sidewinders were awesome doing their rotations as they ascended ! I still have a four place launch pad and firing box I built.
How high did Big Bertha go? When I was a boy, we would balance by hanging the rocket by a string at its COG and point into fan/blower of a wind air conditioner. But I thought we were testing if the fins where straight. This was 50 years ago.
I had a Big Bertha style rocket that had the clear payload tube section. It wasn't the Big Bertha, but the same design and size...little longer. Silly story, the kit came with an illustration of a child putting their pet Gerbal in. It read, "Turn your pet into a cosmonaut". I kid you not. So I put in some Gypsy moths from a nearby tree as a kid. They came back as green goo in the bottom of the payload tube. 😢
As a kid I had a two stage rocket. It was Estes, but I don't remember the rocket name. Anyway, I launched and it went sideways. It angled towards the ground when the second stage fired directly over a rural rd. Well, the rocket was obliterated. Stuff of life. And I always cut holes in my chutes. Used streamers sometimes.
Very nice explanation of the CG/CP as related to stability. The Big Bertha is a great park flyer. The Proto is a nice looking rocket also. The X-15 seems like a tough one to fly correctly, you've done a very nice job 3d printing it. Did you make the decals on this one? Very nice job! Look forward to seeing to future rocket builds.🚀
Yes I found a decal sheet image in Google then printed them out on some adhesive vinyl. Very pleased with the final result. I may try launching it again with a bit more nose weight and a higher thrust "A" engine.
Hey Dean anything new going on with you. Any new builds? I just finished up building an intergalactic supercomputer with blue LEDs. Of course it's just the movie prop. Just wondering what you're up to
@@HackaweekTV wow! How exciting for you. I remember way back in one of your videos you mentioned something about moving. Hope you bought a place with a big garage. I had to Google Asheville North Carolina. And from looking around at (street view ) from Google maps it looks like the kind of place I would like to live. I live in Central Florida on the East Coast. I can watch rockets go up from Cape Canaveral from my backyard all nice and all . But the Summers get a little too hot for me. I envy you, good luck with your move. Maybe you can do a video on your move. *Sarah*
At the end of the thrust burn there is a small explosive charge that ignites. When this happens it produces hot expanding gasses that propel the fire proof tissue, nose cone and parachute away from the rocket tube.
I’m thinking the stars may have lined themselves in our paths? Nah we just have a few things in common. Now if you have a BigRed or a Frankincense I’m gonna let you see who they are, I probably will anyways but any hoo, I have an 05 Ducati 999 I named Dukie and Frankenstein is my BMW so yeah creepy!
The Maine reason for my reaching out to you is dukie, that I kind of named in tribute to my ‘16KTM 1290 Superduke R and m Puppy is also named Dookie after th both vehicles but mostly because of the proximity devices that he drops wherever he is feeling an urge to play a sick joke on his Dad {me}. My boy!
Okay well Dukie was stolen and brought back two days later by a “trusted” friend, with the Ignition punched out and the steering dampener cut away and?
I also had a ‘78 Honda Elsinore when I was a young lad. I’d like to keep commenting but there’s got to be an easier way? You let me know if you have a mind to, I am on West coast time so don’t call after midnight or before noon as I am either stripping or making my rounds as we’re all vampires out here, thought we weren’t? Hope to hear something from you, don’t worry you won’t get any of this weirdness on you, however it my rub off on you?
Hey Dean what's up, how's the new homestead ? I bet you're loving your electric car nowadays. Must be nice laughing at the gas station when you drive by.
Hey Sara. Actually sold the EV for what I paid for it. I miss it at times. Put the car payment into monthly rent cost. We love Asheville though. :) More videos soon. Still settling in.
@@HackaweekTV sorry to hear you sold the EV. Here in Florida I'm paying $4.60 a gallon for my fossil burner. I would like to visit West Virginia this year but I think it would break the bank. We'll see. I look forward to new videos, don't be a stranger keep in touch. Sarah

HOLY CRAP, Didn't know you do rockets too! Awesome! Me too bro!
Great - the Right Stuff. Really enjoyed this series of videos. 👍
Planning on more rocket videos in the new year.
Great fun to watch this adventure. Tinkering and learning about building my own rocket motors here Downunder. Fun little hobby I must say. 😉
Good job Doc Brown. We now know how craters are made on the moon.
🤣
We followed the part 1 and part 2 to build, but now we stacked to put the engine in because the medal hook in the engine mount block it
I think the last one needs a couple of those Mars rafter engines
Looking good, Dino. Keep on hackin'!

About 800 feet.
B Bertha can be built as a payload rocket. A 3.5 oz payload to roughly 1300' on a d12-5. For better results use a 15" chute.🙂

Outstanding! I built one of these. CP! CG! Love it
Right on!
Thanks for your help
Hi Dino, thank you.
Wasn't the x-15 nose heavy? More weight in the back?

QUESTION!
I just found your CB750videos, awesome!! The Hondabond you use- is it the high heat HT stuff or regular blue-and-white label stuff?
Blue white as I recall.
professor dino, have you made a diy rocket engine ?
Nope. Might try sugar rockets one day though. Could be BADASS!
X-15 is more of a glider so maybe an angled launch would be better. That might not be allowed?
Or the rocket motor is too powerful?
Any chance you still have your CB 750 carbs? I need a carb body for my 1973 Cb750.
Nope
Hi, so it's better to cut the center of the parachute out? Thanks
Yes, correct. It keeps it from swaying around so much.
Why I don’t see the engine mount with the medal hook when you insert the engine into the body tube?
The engine mount simply works as a spring that bends out of the way and then snaps back when the engine is inserted.

Been busy getting ready to move to Asheville NC. Packing up the workshop has been challenging.

It's been a while since you had a motorcycle project. Are you gonna anytime soon?
No
@@HackaweekTV Don't be like that! Do it! Pretty please?
Awesome
How the parachute deploy itself ?

Too funny my 92 GMC van is named Big Bertha.

Can you please show your tripod launcher setup?
Looks like a block of wood attached to a tripod plate, drilled out for the launch rod, and a deflector dropped on down. Quite simple. Is that it ?
Yes!

I had an Estes SR71 model, looked great but didn’t fly very well. Lesson learned, aircraft do not a rocket make.
Nope.

Estes has a great X-15, but check out this channel - burkefj ! 😁👍✌
