    Not a Borboun fan but got this as a gift from a colleague. Im a single malt fan all the way, what would be a good mixer with this borboun as its not the nicest straight up ?

    I totally agree with you man.
    The flavour washes away in the water.
    What happened to Clarke's?
    Yeah, Buffalo Trace all the way and at eighteen quid, when on offer at tescos.
    Woodford is the King though.
    Hot toddys for me

    I love a Manhattan. In affordable bourbons I want ones that do a good job of it.. Some of the dearer budget ones make a poor Manhattan IMO (Eagle Rare 10), while a cheapy can make a good one (Old Crow- rough on its own). Limited choice where I live- but Old Forester makes a delicious Manhattan, at a decent price. I also love an Old Fashioned

      Hello Gammon, yes Aldi really dropped the ball on this in my eyes!! I don't mind JD tbh, the No7 is ok. I have a soft spot for red dog saloon which is nice but the bottled in bond Jack Daniels is the best I have tried. I've not yet done any on here yet but I'll get around to it at some point. 🥃

    Aldi doesn't even sell spirits here in the US where this stuff is made, just beer and wine. The good news is that since it's a "straight" bourbon that also means it legally can't contain any coloring or flavoring additives at all. The bad news is that America isn't sending their best whiskey in these export-only brands. I wish the distilleries would send the rest of the world something a lot better.

    Hi Matt. My wife picked me up a bottle of this today (June 2021) at £14 from ALDI and I must say I agree with you about it being watery and short-lived. It'll do as a bargain-basement but I won't sing any praises other than that. Personally I like Jim Beam though (and yet I have trouble liking JD) but then I'm not a -conas...connaseu...conniseu- ... expert by any stretch; my main love is Rum (Mount Gay for example) while Bourbon is my second passion.
    Glad we have your expertise to rely on. Take care.

    • @keltyk
      @keltyk 3 роки тому +1

      JD tastes like charcoal mostly. It' boring. Nice with Crabbie's Green Ginger Wine though. I like Jamaican rum the best- Wray and Nephew is great, though lots hate it. Appleton Estate is a nice budget gold rum. It's got a funky taste which is what I like about Jamaican rums (in my limited experience)

    • @markzambelli
      @markzambelli 3 роки тому

      @@keltyk Oooh... I'll try the Ginger wine mixer, thanks.
      I know what you mean about the Appleton Rum... it's nice. I had the luck to be in Tobago in 1996 and I remember fondly the Angostura rum there... I had the 7 yr one and the Trinidad Royal Oak one was quite the staple. I had my mother-in-law bring me over the Royal Oak whenever she flew back over here... shame she's moved to Antigua and she hasn't been back for years.
      I've been Bourbon-budgetting lately and I must say the Lidl Western Gold ones (the 3 yr's ok and the 5 yrs lovely) are very good. I treated myself a few weeks ago though with a Buffalo Trace from Tesco... nice, but you can't go wrong with Lidl.

    If you mix bourbon with coke, this is very good for £14.00 (0.75l) in scotland (cheaper elsewhere) either get this, or grab a 1 litre bottle of JD when it's around the 18 / 20 pounds point. JD is bad on its own but amazing with coke. I once saw 1L of JD for £16.00, so i bought like 10 of them. I think it was a mistake by the supermarket - maybe a noob was supposed to price the 0.75 litre barcode but grabbed the 1 litre one instead.
    So, this Aldi bourbon is not bad at all, at this price point - Jim Beam is usually too expensive for offerening roughly the same type of bourbon - similar label - but the immitation version is the roughly same as the real brand, IMO. It's simply preference. Bourbons are simply great with coke. Scotches are not, I dont think. Scotch neat, but basic bourbons with your fave type of coke. Lovely.

    Cracking review Matt, thanks. I wondered what others' thought: came across it as I was stood with the current 2m distancing in Aldi, which put me directly inline with the end of the drinks isle and saw this (it did superficially remind of JB, so thought I'd give it whirl for just over 12 quid). I found it tasted like a weak JB, and very sweet to the taste (not bought JB in about 4 yrs). Not too bad - I'll polish it off over time but...

    Did half a bottle of this one the other night. Tried it straight first and was disappointed, tasted like a watery blend of cheap whiskeys!
    I thought mixing it with Coke would mask it's flaws and add the vital vanilla element missing from it but it was just not good. So now Aldi have lost a regular sale altogether as I'll just be buying Jim Beam from anywhere else!

Don't get me wrong it's no Baby stagg but neither is it £80 a bottle. It's all subjective at the end of the day, I'm currently half way through a bottle of Elijah Craig, which up until recently was near impossible to get over here and lots of people rave about.........to be honest it's meh, nothing special at all.

      @@anthonyellison4737 that sounds like some collection you have. I keep trying to get a pappy to review but it's like gold dust over here and I've never had any luck in the ballots online. Cheers 🥃🥃

      @@MattsCigarsAndWhisky Have you tried contacting the importer and getting put on their list? They do a draw to allocate the bottles they receive, like many stores do in America (they are the only ones that are the official importer). You will still get gouged on price but a lot closer to MSRP than the secondary market. The company is called HiSpirits in London. I've had no luck so far though lol. Whenever I see sold prices on auction sites I always see some luck bastard get a bottle of pappies or the antique collection for a ridiculously low price...... I even emailed Pappy can winkles website and actually got a response personally from J Preston Van Winkle himself, which was nice.

      @@anthonyellison4737 I had not done that no!! I will now contact them and get on the list. I'm just really intrigued to see if they live up to the hype. I am sure they will as they have such a legendary status in the bourbon world.

    It's awful. I poured it away. Do not buy it. Unless you want a laugh. Stick to the real deal brands. It is the same old Aldi nonsense. Avoid. This is why I never shop in Aldi. Calling this a Bourbon is a disgrace. Kentucky sort yourself out and ban this carry-on.
