    I do appreciate the focus on how Charlie's illness affects the people who love him, especially Nick - I tend to be a "fixer" myself so I do identify with Nick on that! - but for me the best part of this episode is Charlie's side of that phone call. His struggle to admit it to himself, by admitting it to Nick, turned on the waterworks. Joe's performance in that scene - and also at the end of Ep 3 which is just as heartwrenching if not more so - is *incredible*.

    I appreciate that they are also showing the mental health of the supporter, Nick is struggling as well but feels he can’t show it to be strong for Charlie. He really needed that talk (and hug) from his Aunt.
    Btw…it’s funny that pretty much every reactor I’ve watched from the UK mentions the “Where is the gravy?” when they show Charlie’s roast plate ☺️

    Support systems are essential. They are what Kit has called “found family.” And I agree that Aunt Diane delivering these crucial lines is spot on.
    Yes, worth the wait. This is the best season.

    I have commented this on many reactors comments but....the two statements
    "Love can't cure a mental illness"....I literally said this to a family member about their significant other a few months back...almost word for word...
    "Sometimes a person needs more support than one person can give"
    SO important for loved ones of someone with a mental illness need to know, accept, and understand...yet still be open, supportive, and available to that loved one knowing these things. Olivia Colman is currently 50 yrs old. Hayley Atwell is 42 years old currently.

    When you have an eating disorder, you tend to hide and divert attention. People, friends who get to close to the truth you avoid or play it off. I was good at this. The Air Force doctor I saw figured me out, but I was to scared to admit I needed help. Like me, Charlie really cares for and loves his friends. In Charlies eyes they are more important than he is. In college I had a friend who was awesome. He was part of a group of 5 of us that hung together. After he was diagnosed with cogenative heart problem we became protective of him. He figured out what was going on with me and did not let up on me. One day we were coming back to class after lunch when I had to slam on the brakes to avoid a person who just appeared. After I and another friend asked if he was alright. He said yes. About fifteen minutes later while in choir he collapsed from a heart attack. At the hospital the doctor asked for me to talk about his last few minutes, as he led me to an office we walked by the room where my friend was and i saw him being given open heart massage, then while in the office I told him about the slam your brake moment, and he murmured aww. I was left by myself when he informed the group our friend died. I heard the screams as I wandered back to the room. Until now I have never told anyone what happened that day. Charlie is like that; he holds things in and does not talk about them. Nick is the only one he trusted to be open with. As Dianne said, that is love.

    I so look forward to your reactions to this series, as I feel that you truly understand the depth of emotionality in them, and you tend to make me cry almost as much as I cry when I watch the episodes for the first time. In terms of this episode, first of all, I LOVE Auntie Diane, and Hayley Atwell is so gorgeous in her portrayal of her! But even more than that, I'm constantly gobsmacked at how freaking amazing Kit Connor is! How on EARTH is this very young actor SO GOOD??? He absolutely breaks my heart. I foresee a long and stellar career for him.

    But like seriously tho it’s so obvious that Charlie was crying you can clearly see it and his mum doesn’t notice . How does someone not see their child is obviously upset and crying .

    • @julanuchiha
      @julanuchiha 2 місяці тому +1

      She did notice. After asking about Nick, she asked Charlie what was wrong, is beginning to notice him skipping dinner, and then asks him to return downstairs while she gets medicine for him because he keeps repeating that he doesn’t feel well.
      Her issue is that she’s emotionally stagnant early on due to her own issues with her parents - her mother in particular - so she opts for “practical” solutions instead of emotional ones like Sarah or Yan.
      She cares a great deal about her children but has no idea at this point in the season about how best to connect with them - which is part of her journey for the season.
      I feel immensely for the Spring Family as a while as they all have their mental and emotional things that they need to work through.

    • @M_Mx30402
      @M_Mx30402 2 місяці тому

      @@julanuchiha I’m not saying she doesn’t care about her kids I’m saying she didn’t realise anything was wrong really like but nick who is 16 Isaac who is 15/16 idk and tori did

    • @julanuchiha
      @julanuchiha 2 місяці тому

      @@M_Mx30402 That’s fair! She and Julio are certainly portrayed as much more oblivious to Charlie’s issues. Though Charlie purposefully lies and hides things from them to not be seen as a burden or someone to fix. He admits to Mr. Ajayi that he “hates telling the truth” after all haha.
      You’re totally right, too, that Nick, Tori, and Issac all notice before the parents - and even the rest of their friend group. I think there are deeper character reasons for that awareness as well which this season explores wonderfully imo
      I just love comparing the dynamics of the parents with the major characters due to the honest complexities written by Alice.
      Thanks for the response btw - it’s always a treat to discuss this wonderful show!
