Durrell's series was one of my favorites of the year when I read it too! James Herriot has been a longtime favorite, so I think Durrell's style was nostalgic and cozy for me. I have been reliving the trio through the Masterpiece TV series. I also recently discovered Durrell's other books discussing his work in adulthood and am looking forward to trying those out! Excited to see someone else who has a similar taste in books.
Mitzi, if you haven’t done this, the next time you’re in Atlanta, go walk around Oakland Cemetery and see where Margaret Mitchell is buried. It’s a really neat/beautiful/unique cemetery. I *think* you can also tour her home. I did a Gone With the Wind movie costume tour on the Marietta Square many years ago and that was a lot of fun, too. Vivian Lee’s waistline was crazy tiny!
The Giver is my favorite… I was a seven grade English teacher for many years. I taught it for all of those years. I now currently teach high school English and I an nearly as fond of the books I teach now. My 12th graders read the best books for my kids. The get to read Educated, which is pretty good, and they read Hamlet which is a favorite.
My favorite of 2022 was not one book but rather author Agatha Christie. Since I live in Texas and you drive a lot here, I was able to listen to 18 Agatha Christie novels on audiobook, which were free from the library. I would listen once and find out who the murder was and then go back and listen again with focus on the character development and hints about the killer. Absolutely enjoyable!!
@@mitzireadsandwrites "Hickory Dickory Dock" is a favorite due to the excellent portrayal of a psychopathic murderer. You see how easy it is for them to kill when anybody gets in their way and how they are such good actors, appearing to be a normal person. The story line is quite clever.....
Mitzi I so enjoy your southern accent way of describing wonderful books. We have so many similar books in common. Glad you read Thomas Hardy and enjoyed him!
Great list!! My top favs were Jane Eyre , The Mayor of Casterbridge, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, Grapes of Wrath and The Passenger/Stella Maris by McCarthy.
Hello! I came upon your channel because I am going through BookTube to see everyone's Best of 2022. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was by far my FAVORITE read of 2022. I have never known anyone to read Gone with the Wind. Although a friend/coworker tells me that that is her favorite movie of all time! She names two of her daughters Katie and Melanie because of Gone with the Wind. I had no idea that Christy was a book. I was a HUGE fan of the TV series!
Welcome! I do the same! I love watching everyone share their favorite reads. I have A Tree Grows in Brooklyn on my nightstand right now!!! Happy to hear it was your favorite- happy reading!
I read 6 or 7 Elizabeth Gaskell novels last year, but I didn't get to Mary Barton. I need to add that to my '23 TBR. I love that cover of The Woman in White! Another Victorian I need to read!
I still have Sylvia's Lovers and Wives and Daughters left for Gaskell. My goal was to save Wives and Daughters until I'd read all the others, so hopefully I get both of those read this year. Yes, The Woman in White is great!
Oh, boy. We so agree on so many of these books! Tommy and Tuppence are definitely favorites (Have you read Parker Pyne by Christie? Hilarious). Susan Meisner has been a favorite of mine for years. I especially loved The Shape of Mercy. The Blue Castle is definitely a fave. I even wrote a blog post once where I imagined how things in favorite books came about--the origin of Poirot's character, Valancy's name... and what was the other one? I can't remember. I'll have to go look it up. I had a friend compare my character Willow to Valancy once, and I consider it one of the best compliments ever. The Other Miss Bennet was BRILLIANTLY done. I didn't think I liked it at first, and then my "problems" with it (just the info from the original that I at first, didn't think we needed) melted away when I realized how right she was to do what she did with it! We did need those same scenes etc. through Mary's eyes so we could see why she became the person she did. So beautiful. Miss Buncle is a huge fave. I LOVE The Four Graces in that series. I have Amberwell and Charlotte Fairlie to read this year and can't wait! Mary Barton. Does she feel at all like the Mary who comes to visit Cranford? It's time for me to give up and read Ray Bradbury. I've wanted to for a long time. (Okay, I've read Fahrenheit 451) but you convinced me. You also convinced me to buy The Woman in White last fall, so I have that one to read. Once Upon a Wardrobe was one of my top 5 last year. I thought it was BRILLIANT. I didn't care for Callahan's "Becoming Mrs. Lewis" so I was a bit uncertain. So glad I got it and read it. Christy is always a good idea. I loved that book. Her other book Julie is also good. I particularly love the bit about the typo with the ad for shirts on sale. Snort. IT's the kind of thing that would happen to me. Last year was a year of MANY five-star reads for me. I go into every book assuming that it's a five-star read until the author gives me a reason to drop one or more. If I love a book. It gets five. Period. I may not love it the next time I read it, but if it hits me just right today, then it gets five. If I like it... it gets four. If it's just "okay" it gets three. If I don't like it (rare) it gets two, and if I HATE it (it's gotta be pretty bad for me to hate it), then it would get one. I don't know how to say "this was the best, but I will say if I could only recommend one of those books, it would be The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip. by Sara Brnsvold.
Oh my goodness, I love this!!! I haven't read The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip, but I've heard about it and I'm adding to my TBR right now! I haven't read Julie yet, either, so I'll be on the lookout for that. Thanks so much!
I love watching these favourites of the year videos! I'm so glad you loved The Woman in White and By the Pricking of My Thumbs! Both are great! I read A Tale of Two Cities years ago and loved it! It is still my favourite Dickens. Like you, I haven't read much Dickens yet but nothing has knocked A Tale of Two Cities of the top of my list.
I'm so happy you enjoyed A Tale of Two Cities! It's my absolute favorite. I'm glad you stuck with it, I think that's one of the best ways to read classics - keep at it until it starts making sense! Absolutely agree with your thoughts on Thomas Hardy too. I've read a lot of his, and even though some were pretty sad, it's really good.
I read Gone with the Wind because of you, trust me I never thought I would read that book I haven’t even seen the movie. But boy oh boy favorite read of the year. Am not going to lie I was a bit sad at the end so I went on to read Scarlett that was a good book and made me smile in the end. My sister and I also read the Blue Castle because of your recommendation that was a five star read for sure. Keep the recommendations coming love your channel. P.S I can’t get enough of your accent you really don’t hear that in Southern California.
Oh, I'm so glad you read GWTW!! I grew up watching the movie so I wasn't ever motivated to read it, but wow, isn't it a masterpiece? Too bad she didn't write any others. Thanks for your kind words, too!❤I'm always on the hunt for the next great read, so I'll keep you posted.
My favorite book of 2022 was a reread of Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry and my favorite non-fiction book was The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore. Honorable mentions The Last Garden in England by Julia Kelly and The Last Dance of the Debutante also by Julia Kelly this one is a little slow to start but really excellent.
I really need to make Lonesome Dove a priority. I have had it on my shelf for way too long and really think it will be a favorite. I'll check out these others, too. thanks!
Mitzi, you have done a wonderful job of describing your love for your favorite books of '22. I want to read a number of them. What a great joy a good book can be! 💕
My favorite read was The Other Sister. Like you, I loved it. I will never look at Mary Bennett the same again. Even Mr Collins. I just wanted to cry because we have all felt at one time or other in our lives that we are "less than". And had it reaffirmed by someone else we care about. It did not look too favorably on Elizabeth. Of course, it was from Mary's view. I read Christy in High School and loved it. I have that original little paperback is somewhere around here. If you love that book about animals, I think there is a book called the Durrells of Corfu. and there is a whole series on Masterpiece theater about the family. The mother moves the whole family to Italy or Greece. The little boy is always into animals and little creatures. He learns all about them. The family is quite quirky. But you just know that the little boy will end up a vet when he grows up because of his love for animals of all kinds. If you like reading about the NC mountains, read Where the Lillies Bloom. They made a movie of the book right here in the county where I live.
I read A Tale of Two Cities years ago, but what you said about the first chapter makes me want to reread it. My favorite book in 2022 was Land of Silence by Tessa Afshar. I watched Tessa's description of her book on you tube and it made the book even more meaningful. I highly recommend it.
Wow, Mitzi, what a list!!! You know how similar our tastes are, so any books that I have not read, I am adding to my own list to read. My Family and Other Animals is the first in the Corfu trilogy and I loved the other books too; they’re very similar to the first with more of the family’s antics! 😂 The Other Bennett Sister is definitely high on my priorities this year, as well as The Woman in White 🥰📚💜
Oh, yes! I just know you'll love The Woman in White and maybe you could read The Other Bennet Sister as part of Jane Austen July. I'm going to pick up the others in the Corfu trilogy, too! I'm so glad you mentioned that first one!
I am reading a book set in the mountains of Kentucky right now and enjoying it okay...but it is making me want to re-read Christy again already so much! That book is just so good! I also put Blue Castle on my favorites of 2022. I can't wait to read more of her. I also read Miss Buncle's book and plan to read more of DE Stevenson. That book stuck with me more than I expected. The characters, the community, the fun of the story. All of it. So many of your favorites I have read or want to read and own, they are just waiting for me to pick them up.😊
MItzi, I really enjoyed this video and your excitement over the books is so much fun. I only give a book 5 stars if I would consider recommending it to someone else. It has to be that could that I would want someone else to enjoy it as much as I did. My top book of last year was Lilies of the Field. It was such a darling story and I read it because of you. I have bought a couple of these books because of your videos but sadly I haven't read them yet.
Hi Mitzi. I enjoyed this video with my second cup of coffee. (I watched you talk about all the bookish gifts with cup #1). Our tastes don’t align on everything but when they do man oh man. I loved The Other Bennett Sister and a few others you mentioned as your favorites. I wish I loved Narnia. I do love C. S. Lewis’ nonfiction. My favorite reads of 2022 were: Razorblade Tears (Cosby), Dear Edward (Napolitano) and Elizabeth is Missing (Healey). Cheers!

There are so many of my favorites on your list, books or authors, so any I haven’t read I’m adding to my wish list. I have promised myself that this Victober will be the year I read Anthony Trollope and Elizabeth Gaskell. What I’ve done the last couple of years is reread a classic that I read in high school with the intent to see if I still like it, or if I didn’t care for it in school, do I like it more as an adult. A tale of two cities is my choice for this year.
This was an amazing list of great books. I really need to read Christy!! Thanks so much 😃 I also purchased Blue Castle because of you. I haven't gotten to it yet..but I'm excited to get there soon.

Of your top 6 I have only read The Blue Castle and didn't like it as much as you did. My top 5 in 2022 were Pony and Out of the Dust (Middle grade). Into Thin Air and All Creatures Great and Small both NF. And Frankenstein. Those were my favorites of the year I wasn't picking from each category I was just saying what they were.
I LOVE Out of the Dust! I think it's so underrated and I don't understand why it's not talked about. I need to pick up Into Thin Air because I keep hearing great things about that one. So happy you read All Creatures Great and Small and especially Frankenstein- both all time favorites for me, too!
"You're Not Enough (and that's okay)" by Allie Beth Stuckey was my favorite read of 2022.
Oh, she has a great channel!
I love Christy! I grew up watching the movie and this is the first time I've seen anyone mention it. Truly such a great story.
Durrell's series was one of my favorites of the year when I read it too! James Herriot has been a longtime favorite, so I think Durrell's style was nostalgic and cozy for me. Lilies of the Field was such a pleasant surprise! It was so heartwarming and I could read books like that all year long. Thanks, Debbi!

That’s a beautiful edition of a tale of two cities, do you mind sharing the edition?
I think the publisher is The Heritage Press. I've really enjoyed reading from them. They're well made and great font for reading.
Anne of Green Gables was my favorite of the year! I cant wait to read more from L. M. Montgomery.
oh, yes, Anne Shirley ❤she's such an all-time favorite
I don't know if you're still checking comments on this video after all this time, but if you want a novel with a character like the narrator of The Blue Castle then I have a few to recommend: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, and The Haunting of Hill House and Hangsaman by Shirley Jackson. I keep hearing that is great! Need to check it out- thanks!

Happy New Year, Roni!! Hope you get to those soon.
Terrific list of your best 2022 reads, Mitzi. There are quite a few books on your list I would love to check out in the future.
Thanks, Kat and Happy New Year!! I've been working on my goals for 2023 and loved your 23 for 2023 list!! so inspiring- thanks!
Maybe not your cup of tea, but I've been getting into Aldous Huxley lately. I would suggest two novels: _Crome Yellow_ followed by _Point Counter Point_ as my best reads of 2022.
Thanks! My son keeps telling me I need to read Brave New World, so I do want to read some of his work.
Hi Mitzi, I enjoyed your favorites book list. I also enjoyed The Other Bennett Sister. I will certainly be picking up some Ray Bradbury this year also. Have you read books by Fredrick Backman? No, I haven't read A Man Called Ove, but it's on my shelf! Still need to read Les Miserables, too!
What a great list of books. I'm so glad you have discovered D. E. Stevenson - her books are a delight. Have you read any Elizabeth Goudge or O. Douglas yet? 😇
I love Goudge and have some more on my shelf waiting, but no, not O.Douglas so if you can suggest a title, that would be great- thanks!

Yes! I love Northanger Abbey and think it's way underrated as a Jane Austen!!! so happy you love it, too ❤️
And one more you would love is Jenny Gerhart by Theodoe Dreiser. I think you will fall in love with Jenny. Let me know🌺
Of your top 6 I have only read The Blue Castle and didn't like it as much as you did.
