That one lady saying she’s asked “where am I from” vs being asked “what are you you” is pretty dumb. You’re a foreigner who if you’re speaking German, likely have an accent. So they know you aren’t originally from Germany. In the US, you’re being asked “what are you” because people know you’re American but are asking your heritage. It’s not a racist thing like she’s implying. The us is much more diverse than Germany so it’s natural to ask this of other Americans. I get asked this often as well. These people from the US seem to really be trying to search out racism where there isn’t any. 🙄Calling everything racist or making every situation out to be racist makes it much easier for the real racists and racist situations to hide. 🤦♀️
Exactly, what are you is a common conversation starter in the US , however if you meet someone with an obvious accent or speaking broken English you'd be more likely to ask where they are from.

African descent, meaning they can come in very different shades. I have African descent, for example, but my mum is several shades darker than me. So maybe that's why it doesn't stand out so much.
1 Million of African decent, doesn't include all black and brown people. Just people having African passports. Like if you are white and South African living here it would count. Germany doesn't keep statistics of skin color like some land of the free. Furthermore if the amount of black people living in German big cities I would assume there a lot more than 1 million people here. Would assume it is about 5 % of the the population so like 4 million.

I knew JESUS wasn't Real
Is insulting to ask people with accent “what are you” actually is incorrect English. And yes I am human being and yes proper way will be “ where your from “ or what languages do you speak or what nationality you are ? ✌🏽
What are you is like talking to an animal....be fr
@@anapaladi4499 yeah, lots of people from the us have piss-poor English skills. If you’re used to this, you understand the difference.

Germany needs more diversity, it needs to be 98% non-European XD

I'm impressed with the 1 Million people with african decent, I really don't see that many black people compared to France for example. (Maybe they are from northen africa)
African descent, meaning they can come in very different shades. I have African descent, for example, but my mum is several shades darker than me. So maybe that's why it doesn't stand out so much.
Yes, I was surprised in Berlin there are barely any black people. In fact, I went to Hamburg and saw way more black people there.
@Memphis Charley here here to the 80’s
1 Million of African decent, doesn't include all black and brown people. Just people having African passports. Like if you are white and South African living here it would count. Germany doesn't keep statistics of skin color like some land of the free.
Furthermore if the amount of black people living in German big cities I would assume there a lot more than 1 million people here. Would assume it is about 5 % of the the population so like 4 million.
Hi do Germans speak in English

Calling out other places to probably be racist is a poor excuse for being racist.

In Berlin in 2004-5 a young man in the street walked towards me and directly in front of my face yelled at me "Du auslander raus aus Deutschland !!! rauuus!!! Several times" I was very scared, I didn't know what to do, no more people were around walking, only he and his friend.
I was alone, then I just kept walking. When I arrived to my flat I cried.
If I tell about this terrible experience to any German they are surprised 😮, they didn't/don't want to admit the racism still is there.
I wonder what has happened to that man seeing that more "auslanders" are living in Berlin, he must be 😵💫😖
People in Berlin ("Berliners") are famous because they're rude, but this kind of racist expressions are too much.
I hope nobody else has to go through this kind of experience.
I like Germany but this experience makes me feel bittersweet at least about Berlin.
We ask what you are because we know you're American but are curious about your ethnic background. Not that deep. In s predominately white country, they label you as black off the bat but want to know your country of origin. Same level of curiosity.
Askin somebody "what are you?" is like telling to that person is a kind of animal or weird creature.
