Your reactions and especially your comments are always so on point and perfectly said.....and that is her trademark vocal fry which she will embellish phrases entirely on purpose, she has a unique and distinctive very recognizable voice. To me this is another upgrade to the original song.
Great reaction Britt. The "imperfections" you are detecting such as not completing ending consonants, bending the notes, the vocal fry, etc. are all stylizations that are typical of the great jazz divas of the past. Angelina's singing is very conversational and emotional which, in my opinion, is what makes her performances sound so authentic and honest, and makes them touch your heart so much. Angelina tells the story of the lyrics masterfully, and I think it is largely due to the conversational style she uses - pauses, back phrasing, breaks, intentional breaths, etc., combined with the vocal techniques - runs, vocal fry, register transitions, breathiness, dynamics, etc. I have never heard anyone combine all of these various elements as seamlessly as she does. She doesn't just paint a picture with her songs, she creates a living sculpture of the story. BTW - the painting behind her in this video was painted by her grandmother Mery Zamani.

The term you were looking for is called vocal fry. There is a bunch of vocal distortions which indeed take away from the clean classical singing style, but add a lot in that they add emotion.
I think in the second video Angelina was 13. So the ‘now’ from the original video is a bit outdated :-)
Angelina is indeed very good at making arrangements of music and vocals. Her originals are very good in that respect as well. This month her new single should be coming out and I am very excited about that!
I believe she was 6 years old in the first take. And 12 years old in the second. She is now 17. We are now eagerly waiting for her new single in April, and her debut album out of Republic Records later this year. With a voice like that, we fans can't wait for it to happen. She is one of a kind.

The little Angelina at the beginning is about the age she was when she had the encounter with the poor little street girl weighting people for money to help her family. The little street girl said she would pray for Angelina's dream to come true for her kind gesture of giving her her shoes. It looks to me that Angelina's heartfelt gesture lead to that prayer being answered, not just for Angelina but for the world.
I haven't seen that transition before... absolutely magical ! :) As you say, despite the growth and development of her voice she was already amazingly good when very little...

Britt, she is so inspirational to all of us. She is a perfect example of how hard work, ingenuity, creativity and extreme focus can help you accomplish your dreams (and of course having an incredible support group is important as well). We are so fortunate to be able experience her journey.
So young at the start, still going from toddler to child voice but with total dedication. Never have seen this level of sustained focus in a child of that age. The attention span is typically very short at that point, unless its ice cream and cake 😄

Angelina, besides being part of each of our families (thanks to all the documentation her family has blessed us with), is one of the major artists of our times. It's like these songs were MADE for her voice. She TOTALLY kills this one. The 40s hairstyle (it's like a Rosaland Russel, right?) and the dress,... it's top notch. It's of a time, of an era. Hi Britt 👋. Really love your reaction to 6 yo and 13 yo Angelina. (Please read) She didn't get voice training when she was young. The teachers said that Angelina had a unique sounding voice and style and they didn't want to ruin it. So they taught her music theory etc instead & 3 instruments she wanted to learn, (music theory, really and at such a young age of 5-6. Obviously she understood it). The 1st part of the video, people need to remember that she's still learning her native language and grammar of Norwegian and she's learning English also plus Farsi from her grandma' Mery and some Swedish at home,etc. She was also trying to learn the violin and flute and piano at this time. She always knew what she wanted and has gone for it. One of her special abilities is AP (absolute pitch) and she doesn't always use it as you noticed for she wants the raw organic sound etc. Like the phrase "perfect in the imperfections" perfect cause it's not perfect. Did you know Angie amongst other skills and abilities, she's one of the few artists that can make the autotune sound as an effect if she wants. Back when she was little she didn't want to take God's given talent for granted like so many do. She practiced 2-3 hours a day after her homework. She has excellent grades also especially math. (It's funny, one time her mom Sara said, she just wanted a normal child). The paintings behind Angie are her grandma Mery's, for she's a famous painter. Angie is also an awesome painter too. Is the vocal technique you tried to describe "vocal fry"? She often adds fry, like she adds nasality, twang, or aspirate qualities occasionally (whenever she wants and to whatever degree she wants). That kind of control is a core part of her genius. And I agree: Angelina is a master arranger, "seeing" music in ways that the original artist often couldn't. And yes, she's a master vocal technician as well. In fact, I hope (in the future, when she isn't releasing new hit songs or albums, or touring constantly), that she teaches master classes in vocal technique, arranging for voice, and perhaps a class in "reimagining covers" from various genres and historical periods. If more artists could learn even a fraction of Angelina's skills, the world of vocal music would be just that much better!

You are correct to say hard work and dedication has been necessary for AJ to reach her goals. But what strikes me watching that first clip of young Angelina, indeed all of her early pre NGT clips, is the pure joy she exhibits while singing. A fish in water does not consider swimming to be work but rather to simply be the natural order of things.
Who recognized her latent talent at such an early age? It has been said that Angelina is Mery Zamani's greatest artistic achievement. For one child prodigy to be available to recognize protect, guide and nurture another is extraordinary. Finally, to be raised in a country small enough to allow AJ to spread her wings in a caring environment but wise enough to recognize and celebrate her as a genius in their midst is also remarkable . When you note that she has Angel and a Star in her name it becomes easy to believe that higher powers are at work here. At the very least the stars have aligned to gift us an incredible talent to cherish and enjoy.

Great reaction as always, Britt! I haven't seen that then & now video, but I think Angelina looked late 6 or early 7 there. The later clip was recorded when she was 13. Quite a difference. Talking of difference - I really think you would enjoy watching (on your own time) a video done by BigAngieFan, where you get to see Adele and Angelina singing a portion of the song each. That way it is quite easy to get even more of the details and the differences in their voices and way of performing. The painting behind Angelina is painted by her grandmother, Mery Zamani. Mery was considered quite the prodigy herself, and she excelled in painting and writing. I guess Angelina must have inherited some of her abilities to see a picture differently, at least the musical picture. That being said, Angelina herself is quite artistic in other areas too, not just singing. She and Mery have created all of Angelina's outfits in public appearances for instance.

That thing you're talking about it's possibly the fact that she is a JAZZ singer. And is allowed to change things and that's what makes her so Great... I agree with you it's like she SEE'S the music !!
6 versus 13, if I am not mistaken. The amazing thing you will notice over time is her talent grows exponentially over time, even over a few months.There is a little later 6 year old performance.... I have nothing that is pretty startling. Then the amazing 7-8 performances at NGT. From there there is an explosion of performances in every year that just knocks you back. Eventually by age 12 the performances are not longer just stunning, but the asterisk "for her age" completely vanishes. At that point the performances her world class for any age. At this point most of just enjoy everything she does, not that we did not enjoy it before. :)
That twang imperfection sound is the tonal quality she is producing by bringing her tongue back and placing on voice up towards her nasal cavity.

What's amazing is how her English was so good since it's a 2nd language in Norway..
Angelina's slurred and often 'sloppy' enunciation is very characteristic of the bluesy end of jazz favoured by her greatest influence Billie Holiday but it should also be borne in mind that Angelina would have spent a lot of her earliest years singing 'words' from songs she could barely make out much less understand. Even when she got to Norway's Got Talent, she was happy enough to sing approximations of what she had heard and, at times, cheated by knowingly stringing together incoherent syllables. It didn't matter because I don't believe words, at least those written by other people, have ever been as important to her as the way things sound. She is able to sound like 50 different versions of herself because so many different voices she has been fascinated with and spent time poring over are being reproduced through the Angelina filter. So even when she decides to sing in a language a native speaker might otherwise find problematic, it is always guaranteed to sound so unique and pretty they probably won't care.
I couldn't agree more with your joy in the shift from little Angelina to this young lady .. amazingly together and with a voice that affects the heart so deeply. You can be sure that the shift edit happened in the hands of Grandma Mery .. who so often is her videographer and always is her eternal sidekick and best friend. Her mom is amazing also .. so it could have been in her hands .. but because of the artistry and shared natural wisdom of Angelina and Grandma Mery .. I tend to think it was in her hands together with Angelina. The painting she is standing in front of is one of Grandma Mery's, by the way .. and she taught Angelina to sew, so the fabulous outfit she wore at AGT The Champions when she sang Bohemian Rhapsody was, as the passed down details go, made by them together. Same for the outfits in the Norway concerts, which I believe is the same as the one she sings I Have Nothing in.
I will keep thanking you over and over and over as I already have in other reactions, because you are so present and artistic in your own right and curious and you see and hear the depth and beauty that our beloved Angelina not only lives with but shares herself beautifully in. Thank you Britt.

She was probably 6 at the beginning. By the time she was 7 she had the control and the breathing down. The little girl at the beginning was not yet ready to win NGT.
She is in fact rare, nothing about Angelina is comparable to any regular girl her age, she is beyond her years.
