- Russia's nuclear forces have been put on high alert to a "special mode of combat duty" by President Vladimir Putin.
The Kremlin said the move followed comments by UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and others.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said "unacceptable" remarks were made about possible "clashes" between Nato and Moscow over Russia's attack on Ukraine.
The US immediately condemned the decision, calling it an "unacceptable escalation".

It's fine, we can pretty much know that nuclear weapons will not be used in this situation. Putin is legacy and history-oriented, and as a narcissist, the very idea of his sociopathic nature is to continuously receive praise and admiration. To default to nuclear is to abdicate his own ability to lead, and hence his narcissism collapses in on itself. Chances of this going nuclear are virtually zero in the near term.

I never understood why the authorities in the UK during the early 90's thought the 'cold war' and the threat of nuclear war was over. Russia still had and still has their nuclear weapons on hair trigger alert and the new Russian leadership is far more volatile than the Soviet Union ever was. In addition to that other nations especially India and Pakistan are now pointing them at each other across a disputed border. If we hopefully avoid a nuclear war now the danger is still very much there.

The US changed it policy a couple years ago to approve a limited nuclear first strike. It refused to agree with Russia and China to a policy of no first strike. Russia has dropped that policy in response.

Remember that the majority of people do not war. It's the politicians and people at the top making their own decisions. I hope the people in charge and given power have enough rational thinking to avoid nuclear war ever being a thing. There are so many other ways. Peace is the best option. Love for one another is the way we build stronger and we get through things. We're all human. We all have been blessed with the gift of life. Continue that gift, instead of trying to take it away.
