    As someone who’s trained in old school TKD for almost 40 years I can tell you this guy is the real deal. This footwork is something I learned many years ago from a top point fighter. We called it the power slide. Very applicable w sidekicks as well. My instructor was a short Korean. He always emphasized footwork like this. A huge advantage against someone unfamiliar w it. I can remember using it for one of the first times sparring w a group of very good shotokan stylists. They were effective w grabs, sweeps and punches , but totally helpless against someone who could bridge the gap while kicking or punching, rather than bridging the gap and then striking. High level concept fr Master Woo.

    Hey Master Woo! Your advice is genius and it has helped me constantly through my years of training. Thanks
    I had a quick question if you dont mind. I have been researching the subjec, and would like your opinion --In a situation where you are suddenly confronted by a violent and angry attacker, many people will tend to "freeze" in fear, and they may forget their years of triannig, do you have any advice to help people who have a problem with fear and intimidation? Thank you master! best wishes.

      Of course, however you can stay close to your opponent all the time, knowing how to respond from the distance will boost your confidence.

    • @savage010
      @savage010 7 років тому +3

      OK 1st take your distance try to score then jam so if he wanted to score his or her longer leg won't help him but if he or she a good fighter he could get you with a jump back kick or a huck or bend his leg to make his distance shorter and kick your face with an Axe (ineratchagy) so you need to know your good the other fighter and what he can do if you used the very close tachnice with him I wish that make some sense

    This looks easy in theory, but against someone taller and twice your size and weight? They'll thrash you. You don't even have time to think, you just have to move before you get hit. Man, it sucks whenever I'm paired with a huge opponent, it's so hard to get any kicks in!

  • @oopssenpai8208
    @oopssenpai8208 2 роки тому

    I'm one of the tallest in my team+legs go really high. Shorter opponents always go really close. In sparring my teacher constantly tells me to go more far from the opponent since my legs can already reach them, otherwise my foot will not touch their body, my thigh will(because of the really close distance). So if you're shorter the key is to go as close as possible.

    sport TKD has many practical weaknesses, yes. However, one is able to apply the ideas in TKD (in general) to street fights. It's the same with everything... MMA, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, all martial arts (unless they are DESIGNED with street fights in mind).

    The problem I am having with one guy in particular is he is also quicker than me. I'm stronger than he is, but his reach and speed advantage mean he is able to keep me off of him. I need techniques to beat a longer, faster opponent. If I could take him down, he'd be screwed. But in TKD we are not allowed to do that.

    "Kick and run away". That is not a good advice for some reasons:
    1. Taller opponents have advantages over you in a distance fight, as their attacking range is much wider than yours.
    2. You are actually turning your back against your opponent, making you vulnerable to an attack. If you are in Taekwondo sparring competition, you will get you marks deducted as well

    Master, do you have any video about flexibility? Some years ago (more than 10, actually), I used to train TKD, I really liked it, it was fun and all, but I never had good flexibility. Seeing people who could easily kick above their heads made me feel bad, and I forced beyond my limits, which hurted me badly (a "pop" near the hip region). Nevertheless, I managed to get my red belt, but never could perform really high kicks decently, I relied on pure strength to rise my leg above head. Do you have any tips?
    Thanks in advance

    • @sebinachurchill4246
      @sebinachurchill4246 8 років тому +2

      Practice song basic lunges, hold for 10 seconds. When you do try to kick high, raise your knee as high as possible. That will make your kick go higher.
      Put your foot on a wall, about waist high. Gradually lift your foot higher on the wall until you can't go any higher. Try and make your leg go an inch beyond your limits and hold for 10 seconds.
      Practice doing the splits. The farther down you go, the easier these drills will become overtime.
      Wish you best of luck!

      +John Gitlan about 14 years ago, I guess. I'm gradually learning about flexibility these days. Gradually because I don't have patience to stick to a given task for too much time, lol. Mostly because the sources I search for knowledge are in English, and it's not my first language. But anyway, I just discovered about active stretch and passive stretch, the most used form of stretch. If one looks forward to get splits for a really long time, even when old, he should invest more time in active stretch

    What about the guy who stays on one leg ALL THE TIME, and just follows you with the other leg. Its very hard to get into the target space! OLD BOB doesn't have arms, either! These guys that lean way back, with one leg always up-like a scorpion, and just pop pop-he score the point, and you don't have a chance to really get the second or third shot. You can't hit below the belt, or in the back (obviously).

    • @jharju2352
      @jharju2352 9 років тому +1

      TheKlbrister If your opponent spends a lot of time on one foot, can't you sweep them down? If they're waiting for you to exploit the weakness (risking balance with one foot on the ground), I'd imagine something like a feign punch or two would allow you to close the distance for a sweep takedown or even a well-timed spinning hook kick to the face. But these are just thoughts, I hope they're of any help.

    • @TheKlbrister
      @TheKlbrister 9 років тому +1

      I LOOOVE spinning heal kicks! I'm still trying to get out of "deer in headlight" syndrome. That takes practice. I don't know if the sweep would be considered "dirty" or not. That's a good question. Different organizations have different ideas of what's "civilized". This organization I'm in doesn't enforce gear at black belt level. They allow face shots (not that you just hammer on people). Kids go running home crying, sometimes. I'm working on trying to "out maneuver" someone who is more skilled than I am, and they just shoot a kick right into a 4 inch space, regardless of blocking efforts. The people who keep the leg up, and have spider legs (I'm short), people who jump high, I have bad knees. I would be better off coming up from underneath, but...it's hard work. I'm determined. This isn't "enrichment" for me, this is TRAINING! Thank you for the advice. I will write it down to practice it! Have a Blessed Day! Thank you!

      TheKlbrister The "scorpion" stance (great description) is now illegal in WTF rules as you can't hold your leg up for more than 3 seconds without performing a strike. However you say the organization has different rules, the way I used to deal with this was:
      Step in with a low body block striking and controlling the raised leg (do not let it front hook kick you), your body should be on the outside of theirs.
      Bring your rear leg up to a crescent or axe kick and nail your heel into their face
      It's easy, it hurts them and they will not be feeling so confident to stand in such a stupid position
      Other option is to "fake" missing with an axe kick and bring it down on their leg at worst you will get a half point deduction, most likely a warning.
      When someone does a move you don't like , take a break from going for the points and make them afraid to do that move then go back to scoring.

      BAHAHAHAHAHA! I know some people that would NOT BE HAPPY TO KNOW THIS! I wish I could star * this to remember-very helpful information. Thank you! Question: When doing Hyeongs, what is a "front kick" to you? I saw this girl from Korea, and her kicks looked like she came from the Bolshoi ballet. I'm a girl, and it seems guys do them differently. I didn't like that "grande bantement" style for a front kick, but she won the medal. I hit with the ball of my foot. I try to envision forms as if someone is in front of me sparring. Weird.

      In official sparring we are not allow to grab each other leg however in real fighting, I guess you need to learn some self-defense techniques for that.

    Its much better to step inside of his guard rendering his strikes useless and weak. Staying outside allows them an oppurtunity to throw a wild punch and catch you as you step in. This is not a smart technique for a legitimate fight

      I will say two things, these kicks are already for the initiate, someone without a basis never kick like this, and If someone will sense you when you make skip, he can counterattack you jop chagi. Regards :)
