Saw them live last month for the second time since 1984 when I was 23. They were just brilliant. Iva is a legend and the whole band still sounds amazing. The show was sold out too.
You REALLY need to hear their 40 years live concert with this. This song was the reason I not only finally got to see Icehouse live, but was pulled through the crowd by the audience until we were on the barrier directly in front of Iva (the frontman) for this. We had tickets but I have a palliative condition that floored me the night we were supposed to go. Icehouse's absolutely amazing manager, Keith, found out and insisted I come the following night. We didn't have a babysitter but as my partner saw them the night before (I made him go), our then tiny 9 yr old daughter jumped at the chance. When this song started, she recognised it as a favourite of mine and dragged me up to the front to dance. Within a few seconds you could hear people going "Oh my god, there's a REAL little girl here!" and about 6 people escorted us up to the barrier a metre away from Iva and sat her on the railing. Thanks to them, I got to see every favourite song of mine from directly in front of them as while I eventually had to go back and sit down due to the pain, Icehouse played each of those songs one after the other while we were at the front. What was amazing was that every single thing was obviously just one of those incredible moments where all of them happened together and created one of the best moments of my life. It was honestly surreal, I still find it amazing that it played out that way.
Produced by Keith Forsey, one of the greatest producers of the eighties, the one who was behind almost every Billy Idol song in that decade as well as Don't You by Simple Minds, made famous through the soundtrack of the movie The Breakfast Club.
@@MrMambott they were originally called the flowers but had to change the band name because their way a band already called the flowers and they sang a song called icehouse
In the late 70's and early 80's I was big into Aussie groups like Icehouse, Midnight Oil, INXS, the Skids, and let's not forget the awesome exceptional group, the Kiwi group the Split Enz that gave birth to Crowded House. I got to see Crowded House in Sacramento in the mid 1990's with their hit "Don't Dream It's Over". They played half the set, then Tim Finn came out and played the rest of the set as Split Enz with his brother in the band, Neil, and the crowd went crazy. They were Split Enz fans to the core and held up albums of the Split Enz in tribute. It was like a Beatles reunion. I will never forget hearing "Six Weeks in a Leaky Boat" live for the rest of my life. Split Enz is one of the most unappreciated groups in the history of 70"s-80's rock, and New Zealand's proudest.
I love this song and Icehouse. If you want more bass, listen to the US Version of Hey Little Girl. Guy Pratt provided the Bass and it's far more present in the mix. Icehouse are responsible for 2 "unofficial" Australian Anthems: "Great Southern Land"and "Electric Blue" "Man of Colours" may be Iva Davies opus. I always liked "Stay Close Tonight" as a song that flew under the radar, well it wasn't a single. Great bass too.
we did get the loud beat.....we played it very loud on our very large speakers...our speakers were bigger than most 8 year old kids...and when payed as we did back in the 80's, this was a huge sound. In many ways, newer sounds do sound bigger, but they are also on smaller speakers....big (80s/ 90') speakers do equal bigger sounds!
When I heard it for the first time, I thought it was Roxy Music / Bryan Ferry. When the presenter said it was the Icehouse group, I thought he was wrong and that he would be kicked off the radio
This is song is very much in the Style of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music. - It' is SOPHISTIPOP which foregoes the "Umph" you are expecting (but never comes :-) - It did make an appearance in the Alternative LA charts to my recollection.
I see a lot of suggestions and all very good. Another great choice is Street Cafe. Touch the Fire is not as well known but that’s a banger. Definitely hope for more.
1982 great synthesizers, the whole song is magical, gentle and dreamy. Lovely finesse and atmosphere. Simply a mega stylish masterpiece from the early 1980s.
Thank you so much Dereck to your reaction to this Aussie classic! The song was actually born after Icehouse's record company in the UK were listening to tracks already recorded for Primitive Man and felt there wasn't a strong single for their market. So Icehouse then wrote and recorded "Hey, Little Girl" and ended up performing it on Top Of The Pops! The Primitive Man album was so experimental and seems to sound better and better as the years go by. Other tracks "Great Southern Land" (#5 in Australia) and "Uniform" will be future requests down the line. :-) My first edition CD of the album has the 12 inch mix of "Hey, Little Girl" as a bonus which has more sparse instrumentation and an extra verse! Also the music video seem to be sped up a little compared to the album version (runtime around 10 seconds less), not sure it was originally intended to be that way or if it's a UA-cam thing but it does lose a bit of it's iciness and makes the intro more rushed.
The 12" version is a lot better than the single version. There was only 3 people that performed on the track. Iva Davies - vocals, guitar, Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, bass guitar, Linn drum machine. Keith Forsey - additional percussion. Guy Pratt - bass guitar and backing vocals. Keith Forsey Has done albums for Billy Idol including the Rebel Yell album. Guy Pratt was the bass player for Pink Floyd's The Division Bell album and it's live album Pulse. Gut Pratt has also worked with a lot of other well known bands and artist
Great 80's band . I should know I was there in Australia in the 80's and listened to them. Should listen to there other hits too." No promises ", Electric Blue", and "Crazy", those are some of their best tracks . Check them out , bye , bye !!
Hi You. Grettings from France. Nice T-shirt. Dereck my boy, if you dont react to "no promises" you will miss something great. It's a masterpiece. i swear. Kis kiss.
Lead singer Iva Davies was a reed player in an orchestra before he founded Icehouse. He is the only constant member. Icehouse was popular in Australia 🐨before they broke international fame in 1987, 35 years ago🎂. This is an early hit. 😃 Iva Davies lists David Bowie as an influence. The voice and the music are indicators. Suggested next song: Electric Blue. Written by Iva Davies and John Oates. 35 years 🎂Yes, the same John Oates from Hall and Oates!
I always confused this music with Mark Boyce's because they have the same title (Hey little girl) of course, I much prefer Mark Boyce's, it is so emotional and deep.
Primitive man is a great album, but one of my favourites from that album is Trojan Blue, but it is too bad its not one of the singles and its often overlooked
Great track, heavily influenced by Roxy Music and a vocal style of their lead singer Bryan Ferry but then again there's probably very few 80s bands who weren't influenced by Roxy Music, check out Roxy Music's Love is the Drug from1975 and you'll see what I mean
Great song. Not a simplistic song nor a simplistic arrangement (often confused with Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry. Not at all simple ). Lucky to see Icehouse live in 2022 in a quite intimate concert in Canberra (with Frente! as well) to take my talented son (Adam: www.youtube.com/@adamschranz8888); great music and got a lot of good photos!
Hey dereck ! good video, I have a suggestion for you : song of volga boatmen with Leonid kharitonov by the soviet army choir ! (a great russian song) It changes what you are used to reacting to. Especially the clip which gives off an incredible charisma.
Saw them live last month for the second time since 1984 when I was 23. They were just brilliant. Iva is a legend and the whole band still sounds amazing. The show was sold out too.
Oh gosh I love this song it's such an underrated moment of 80's magnificence. Definitly a guilty pleasure of memories .
Thanks for reviewing ❤
Fact Icehouse are the best band to ever come out of Oz

Music has such power - clearly these magic moments for you. Wising you all the best ❤
Love Ice House 😍
Iva I think is a underrated vocalist.
Icehouse are great! Check out ‘Great Southern Land’, ‘Electric Blue’, and ‘No Promises.’ Soooo good!
Yes! The Holy Trinity of Icehouse songs!
British fan here!

One of the great Australian bands of the 80s. Classic song! When I first heard his voice I thought it was Bryan Ferry.
When I first heard them I thought they were Flowers
@@MrMambott😅
Like first time I heard Paul Young I thought it was Robert Palmer
They still do concerts here in Australia @stevenhulse4005
@@MrMambott they were originally called the flowers but had to change the band name because their way a band already called the flowers and they sang a song called icehouse
One of my favorites from the eighties. So smooth.

One of my all-time favourite songs! Hello from Australia! Iva is Pronounced 'Eye-Va' Davies.
Saw them a few months back. Iva still has it. He was like the Australian Bowie.

I've seen Ice House live a few years back. Australian rock from the 70s & 80s was the best and some of our most iconic songs have come from.
He also has the high..probably the best voice of the last forty years. Listen to Crazy, and No promises...

Ah memories !
Love this song so much 😍😍
And thank you so much for your T-shirt 😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩💐💐💐💖💖💖
Check out "The Wall" by Icehouse. One of their best songs by far.
Walls by Icehouse is the best then Great Southern Land Nawww and Can't Help Myself when the band were called ''Flowers''
"Great Southern Land"!
When I heard it for the first time, I thought it was Roxy Music / Bryan Ferry. When the presenter said it was the Icehouse group, I thought he was wrong and that he would be kicked off the radio
very Roxyesque

tension in the restaint
And four years later Brian Eno would work on their Measure for Measure album. :)
So funny...there is this song by icehouse in my play list. When I listen to it I feel a kind of nostalgy. Thank you dereck 💙
Great song ! I often listen to their other song called "No promises", I think it's their better song. Would you make a react of this one too please?
You may love Bryan Ferry with David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) “ is your love strong enough?”in fact any one might love it 😍
I see a lot of suggestions and all very good. Another great choice is Street Cafe. Touch the Fire is not as well known but that’s a banger. Definitely hope for more.
Great new wave song , " comme j'aime "! Thank you for your analysis , Dereck.
As a French woman, I definitely love Derek's shirt🇲🇫🇲🇫🇲🇫❤️❤️❤️❤️
1982 great synthesizers, the whole song is magical, gentle and dreamy. Lovely finesse and atmosphere. Simply a mega stylish masterpiece from the early 1980s.
Perfectly said the 80s was atmosphere it took you on a journey within a dreamy trance like fog state and has never left after 35 yrs.
This one is a true gem of the New Wave era, along with Fade to grey by Visage. Very nice pick.
Thank you for reviewing a great Aussie band

Icehouse songs are brilliant - try 'Crazy', 'Electric Blue' or 'Dusty Pages'!
And here it is 40 years later to show how good the bass line is ua-cam.com/video/1y52nNps1OI/v-deo.html
your right about it lacking in bass i usually add a whack on mixer when i play it on a PA system
Exactly what I thought. Bass line of this is great when you can hear it properly.
Check out "Electric Blue" also.
Icehouse- Touch the Fire, Crazy, or Iva's - All the Way
another one from my vinyl collection, you peeking in my record collection under my bed again dereck?
J 'adore vraiment !!...
Mega song !!!!!!
I like your channel, you remind me of a character I would make on grand theft auto

dereck will react to more songs by shania twain in live chicago 2003 you have many songs. greetings from argentina you are a crack
Sound quality on this isn’t great, try a listen to the remastered version the bass line is awesome.
One of my all time favourites.
I think it may have been taken straight from a VHS tape and uploaded and it's also a little sped up too.
But it didn't make your playlist cut
Love Icehouse esp Crazy, No Promises, Electric Blue.
Check out Mr.Big by Icehouse 😌

It is not lacking in bass. Not every song needs to be drowned in bass (or drums!); that would be repetitive and simplistic!!!
BRYAN FERRY aurait pu la chanter!!
Iva isn't Eva it's more like Ivor
Myleeeeeene pff trois jeudis déjà j en suis réduit a faire suer dans les com quelle tristesse
Like many others, he sounds like Bryan Ferry in the band Roxy Music. The song is good but there is something missing.
Yeah ..... Evea davies........ It's Iva Davies... Say it..... lol.... Pardon me... I forgot your , a Yank...
Love this song. His voice is so sexy
