I've never understood the idea that it "isn't a GTO" because of how it looks. The original GTO looked like literally every other Pontiac that was made at the time. Tempest, Bonneville, Grand Prix, Catalina, and GTO all looked like the same every day family car. The 2004-2006 GTO was EXACTLY what a GTO is supposed to be: a powerful engine in a subdued body.

    • @AnthonyMShadows

That's really true, growing up with Pontiac's I liked how the GTO looked like a muscled grand prix, but I forgot just how identical the Tempest and Le Man's were to the classic gto's. back in the day as well.

They complimented how cheap it was compared to the power you get thanks to the LS. And they knew that the tuning community would quickly find ways to make it even faster since the LS1/LS2 were very tuner-friendly during its time. Was it fast around a track? No. But they would have later episodes of them drifting the car around their track with Japanese drift racers, which shows how incredible of a machine the Monaro/GTO really was.

  • @Rex_Stuph

The irritating bit was Holden turned the whole production line for the Monaro into left hand drive, basically removing it from the Australian market to lob it at the US to miss the target.

@@DangerAngelous That was the downfall of both locally produced cars. Pricing. In 72 a HQ Kingswood sedan was $2990. A VW Beetle was $3990. Bang them out, cheap as chips, sold a bunch. I remember somewhere between VR and VT/VX base Commodores jumping from $20K to $35k. I truly think people still would of been buying, if they kept charging meat pie prices for meat pie cars. That's not an insult, that's what the base models were good at. Putting a new car under Australian arses.

I find it amusing that in the US, people are swapping Holden badges onto these. Here in Australia it is quite a common sight to see the Chevy bow tie slapped on the front of Comodores and the Pontiac front clip on the front of Monaros. I'm not sure if that says something about the owners or that the car itself had some sort of identity crisis since day one.

Have you ever seen the old GTO's though? Style wasn't everything with those, but it definitely was distinct and the power plant wasn't the hottest thing available per se but it was very balanced and the shifter/tranny packages offered were excellent. I had a 68 judge clone in high school and it was something else... very fast, handled surprisingly well, crisp shifting, 4.11 gearing that could cook any tires, and styling that could get a dungeonmaster laid. These newer goats were cool as a concept, but once you got into one it was clear that it was just another GM rebadge.

The Vauxhall Monaro (the UK's name for this brute) was and still just about is the only vehicle like it you could buy in this country. It was cheap, vastly undercutting the similarly-powered M-Cars and RS Audis of the era, but it was a Vauxhall - the official car brand of not knowing any better. Still, though, it carries quite a cult following, and since very few people know what it is, they definitely turn heads when they burble through a cobbled town centre. Probably not the car to pick right now, though, with fuel prices at £1.70 a litre ($8.40 a gallon).

I wasn’t the one that sold it but even though I knew it would make the salesman a ton of money I never agreed with it it just didn’t feel right. When the marketplace shifts mainly to EVs and the large V8s are swept into the dustbins of history in favor of tiny engines with overworked turbos that fry out too soon, we will all look back and remember the pure, primal roar of a performance V8 and for those of us who will remember, there will be a twinge of sadness. Sometimes, and this is true with performance EVs, it isn't all about the insane numbers. It can also be about the experience, the rumble, the buzzing and growling...
I never agreed with many of the magazine car reviews who called this design boring or not worth the GTO name. There's a thing called "understated" and given Pontiac's history of gross overstyling for awhile, this GTO was really, really sharp.

I bought one of these in 2006 brand new, as Ford dealers in my area were all charging over sticker for the new Shelby Cobra, which is what I wanted. On paper, it was a killer formula - big V8, low price, and you have something that not everyone else has. And while the car was fun, it had problems. The optional 18" wheels for America were not tested very well, for example. I found that they caused the tire to rub on the inside edge against the shock tower while under cornering load. The digital info display on the dash failed, and it took two weeks to get a new part from Australia, only to then have to order a new body control module from Australia to match. Once, it had to be flatbedded to the dealer because it wouldn't start - because a poorly wrapped wire bundle had frayed against the frame and was shorting out the car. I also found the GTO owner forums to be a joke - if you dared suggest the car had problems it shouldn't have, you got attacked by everyone. Tesla cult before Tesla was a thing type stuff. "You don't think it should cord the insides of the tires at 10k miles? Well why don't you have aftermarket wheel spacers on there, didn't you read all the FAQs?"
I liked the car for what it was, but I was glad to get rid of it probably two years later.

Had an 04 with the 5.7 for about a year. Coilovers, poly bushings everywhere, etc. Took corners better than you expected for the type of car, but I just could not get past the steering ratio and feeling. It didn't inspire confidence. It felt more like a truck than a sports car, you had to turn the wheel 30-50% more than most cars and it felt numb. The shifter in mine (albeit, I had a short shifter) required so much force it felt like a boxing match, very notchy and forceful. Despite it getting more random compliments than all of my previous cars combined, I couldn't get over the clunky driving dynamics and stomping the gas on straights got old quick. Also had to redo the notorious sagging headliner. It looked and sounded great, but I ended up trading it for a BRZ

I think the 2000's GTO was/is awesome. The original GTO looked pretty much just like all the other Pontiacs of the time. It was just a hot-rodded Tempest. I like the styling of the newer GTO more now than I did when it came out. These cars are selling for some pretty high prices.

I miss Pontiac. I've always been partial to GM and Pontiac in particular with it's insane amount of plastic cladding. Which would you rather have, a 2002 SS Camaro or a 2002 Trans Am? They built a mid-engined sports car in the 1980s that unfortunately was saddled with a crappy engine and some dubious suspension parts because Chevy whines about the Corvette having to be the best. Also, they stole not one but two Australian cars, the GTO in the video and the G8, the latter selling in criminally small numbers before GM killed Pontiac. Going back to the Camaro/Firebird thing, I'll give you one reason why Pontiac was superior, what did Burt Reynolds drive? I think I've made my point.

I love my 05 GTO. It's a blast to drive, and it does feel like an imported car. It definitely feels better than anything else pontiac made around that time. It's fairly quick even for today's standards. It also doesn't stand out like a mustang or challenger does. It's also rare as shit to actually see another one out on the road. It's nice not seeing everyone have the same car you would owing a mustang.

A week ago i was reading a magazine from 2003 that featured an article about the presentation. I thought to myself: "Man, honestly, i wouldn't even drive this today" The interior hasn't aged very well, it looks like the Opels of the time. Give me a TT anytime, that one still looks modern 23 years later. But TT was a different thing...
I always thought, it looks like an Opel Omega that came out in '94

I am A huge Holden FANATIC as far as guys in the USA go. I have owned a 2013 PPV, 2016 SS and a 2004 GTO T56. I have an email from 2003 begging GM to import the Saudi Arabian/GCC LHD Chevrolet Lumina(Commodore) and Caprice. They responded kindly and said they would take it under advisory. They gave us the GTO a few months later. Of course I was only 20yrs old at the time and an E4 in the US Army in Germany. I wasn't paid enough to buy...much less insure one and even if I tried AAFES car sales couldn't sell me one in Germany because of import laws. I was stuck climbing the ladder from Ford Panthers with 4.6L 2v to a 2005 Mustang GT in 2007, a new 2010 Mustang GT and a new 2011 Mustang GT before I finally got my 2013 PPV with 800 miles in 2014. That was all it took to find out that LS is a helluva drug.

I had an automatic 05 for 6 years and absolutely loved it. Trans shit the bed at 140k and I sold it with the intention of getting something more practical, but the GTO turned me into a big Holden fan. I had to have the newer model, so now I have a g8 GT. Absolutely love that car as well. Aussies built a hell of a car, sadly GM shuttered the plant that built these, the g8, the SS, and the caprice PPV.

They weren't that great as a car though. My old man had a Silver Mink HK GTS 186S back in the early 80s, he hated it. Sold it to his cousin for $400 and went back to driving his FC Station Sedan.
An identical car to the one he owned sold for $130,000 not long ago. He still has his FC, along with a collection of mid 50's Fords, and doesn't regret selling the Monaro at all.

I appreciate how you got all the right points. This is not a GTO. The failure of this great car was because it was labelled as a grumpy muscle car. It was misunderstood by the public because GM appears to have misunderstood the car themselves. Americans tried slapping muscle car styling into this car and it looked out of place. It wasn't meant to be that GTO, it was something else, and it was good.

I factory-ordered (with a 6 month wait!) a black-over-red 2006 GTO just like this one, also in a 6-speed manual. Added the full sport appearance package to try and win back some of the gaudiness of the Trans Am WS6 I'd had previously. Kept the GTO for 11 years, sold it with 36,000 miles on it. It was my last GM car. I'm in a Challenger 392 now. Might be my last V8, the way things are going.
