    You could also set up two of them on each side of the propeller with just different LED-s, so you can make a clock illumnator with differently colored pointers and numbers or an image illuminator like this one

    Theres only 1 thing I would change on this design, and that's to add 2 washers and little metal brushes to bypass the battery, then you could modify the mains cord and put a 5v power supply on it, connect it to the brushes and bam, whenever you plug the fan in, the LEDs will turn on.

    It's probably better suited to do propeller POV displays using rotatory encoders or step-by-step/servo motors since you don't have to track RPM or have the kind of problems you found in this build. It also allows you to have control of where you want the text to show at any time instead of it just spinning around.

    @Aperson-sv2hc 8 років тому +2

    You need two small brushes to give it power, so you don't have to take it off to recharge. You might need a small regulator for it when the contacts make bad connections occasionally... or you could even use a coil to pick up enough power from the magnet as it passes by, rectify and filter it and you have just enough power to run all 5 LEDs.

    • @172pilot
      @172pilot 8 років тому

      +Aperson That's what I was thinking.. The ONLY thing wrong with this project is that it needs that battery (which is now HOT GLUED??!?! to the stick, so it can't be easily removed/replaced).. I'm wondering what it would take to either use that magnet and install a coil on the stick to either charge a supercap or battery, or use a "slipring" (www.sparkfun.com/products/13064) to get power to the spinning stick..

    • @Aperson-sv2hc
      @Aperson-sv2hc 8 років тому

      +172pilot: That's a nice product from sparkfun, if only that fan motor shaft could fit all the way through... Would need some kind of gear box to make it compatible. And sinse it has six wires passing through, you could connect it directly to the LEDs and have the microcontroller stationary.

    since there's a magnet , might be worth trying to charge a capacitor with a coil of wire, to run the circuit, therefor eliminating the battery all together

    Enjoyed it. It would have been nice to have a portion dedicated to how to test the led & programming without actually building the blade and spinning it, if that is possible. Also, would have been nice to have you make the blade in a 3d printer, provided you had access. Expanding the concept to wifi/app update like the 'lametric' product would also be nice. Thank you for your work.
