Nice, I have a sun ray razor straight razor that has a chip on part of it and sometimes the blade comes loose.Drives me mad. At least now I have kind of an idea how changing handles works. Im gonna try and make a handle made of horn.
You can buy the 1/16 or 1.5mm bar from lots of suppliers, just google the 1.5mm brass bar something will turn up, and micro washers in the USA sell the small washers. www.microfasteners.com/home.php?cat=658
So nerve-wracking this process for me. I spent a lot of time making two sets of scales for vintage razors. One is made of padauk wood and the other is cherry. They started at 1/8" but they're now in the 1/16" range at the thickest. I slightly concaved the inside and convexed the outside. Put a shellac finish on them both. Made brass and nickel silver spacers that I slightly angled to adjust for the flex. I am going to use a dome type collar for the brass and a standard washer for the nickel silver. A lot of tedious hand work went into them and now I need to take a hammer to them. I have a 4oz peening hammer so it is very light but it's nerve wracking.
Thank you so much for this information but i really need to know where to find the peens and on what name should i search ? if someone can please help .
Chris, there can be a few reasons for this, firstly you may have a slight warp in the scales secondly there could be a slight twist in the tang, and thirdly if you do not peen the pin correctly you could cause the pin to twist and throw the blade out of alignment.
@@j.mahoney1178 Thank you for the reply. Your videos help me a lot repairing my straight razor. I'm getting the materials to attach some walnut scales and mirror polish my blade.
I have replied on the video before, but this is the best peening video I seen! I got a question. I'm going to buy me a new peening hammer. Are you familiar with a chasing hammer? The head weight is 3oz. One side has a small round smooth peen and the other side has a fully round, domed and smooth 1" in diameter on the other side. So you think this would be a good peening hammer? By the way I've watched your honing videos, and you hone some impressive edges. I'm a newbie at honing and just got my stones, and I could sure use some pointers. Are they anyway I can contact you by email or on the shaving forums? Good info Sir!
Hi Michael, I have not used a chasing hammer, I have a very old vintage ball peen hammer, being a Carpenter by trade I know what a chasing hammer is, so I would say to you If you are happy with this hammer to go ahead and buy it.

You should have another camera set up zoomed in close to the pin as your pinning it so people can see better the process.
I think it's a pretty straightforward process for a practical-minded person, not too difficult to achieve.

You can buy them many places model shops or just google 1/16 brass bar, you can also buy them from Maggards shaving supplies.
Ebay has several but take your time before you buy. The reason being are prices, quantity, and types of washers.
