  • The South American country of Chile has this flag, known as the Lone Star (La Estrella Solitaria). The star represents Venus, significant to the country's indigenous Mapuches or to an independent state; blue symbolizes the sky and the ocean, white is for the snow-covered Andes, and red stands for the blood spilled for independence. There are some variations: the early flag, the transition flag, this one and this one.
Now some flags are quite similar to the Chilean flag, most notably the flag of the US state of Texas. Having a star and the colours red, blue and white can also make you think of the flags of Puerto Rico and Cuba. And let's not forget the Morning Star flag used in Netherlands New Guinea, as well its proposed state Republic of West Papua, which never came into being because it was absorbed into the Republic of Indonesia.

Oh, the Chilean flag most definitely influenced the Cuban one (and thus, the Puerto Rican) and it's over 20 years older than Texas'.

Jealousy is unbecoming such a great, self-confident nation. Always comparing yourselves to the Great Khan.

The chilean flag has a "little" influence on the cuban Céspedes flag or Demajagua flag, which is a chilean flag with shuffled colors, as a thanks gesture to the chilean support to the cuban independence through the chilean politician and state man Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna.

That is correct. After the Spanish - South American war in 1865, many Chileans started supporting independentist movements in Cuba and Philipines.

Because there's no Texas flag emoticon, though there should be. They don't like state pride, especially Texas pride, and try to tear us down whenever they can. Like you're doing now. Pure jealousy, but that's OK. Being the big dog means all the little dogs will bark at you. Nobody barks at Chile.

Some say the red means choripanes

@HistoryHustle it's a joke referring to choripan, a bratwurst like sausage in a baguette-like bun. Us Chileans love choripanes, and while popular throughout Hispanic-America, we have our own twist to the sausage.

As awhward as iit ccan be many flags are influenced by the colors of French Revolution. Flag, red and blue representing Pais, where the revolution started and white being the new costitution, ", a "pure" one. That " mapuche" aspect is not real.

The flag of the Republic of Texas also had the Lone Star and, to my eyes, was more elegant. However, it's not nearly as famous or as iconic as the flag of the State of Texas.
