      @@555foreverr That's a valid point but I do think its simple to separate an artist to their art. Just as said in this video, you may look at the artist in a different way, however the art always stays the same. Majority of the time, the artist has simply changed for the worst compared to the time they made the specific piece of art, therefore it still holds meaning. Some people can't do this and will do their best to detach once they find out that their favorite artist has done/said something controversial, especially if their group/community has been especially targeted which is completely fine. But others don't take it personally, they simply listen to the artist, unbothered by the artist themselves. However, someone who is aware of the wrongs their favorite artist did yet continues to support and defend them is something completely different and rather sickening. I think everyone has different abilities and opinions on separating an artist to their art and each opinion is completely valid and holds respect.

      I feel a similar way. A few years ago a video came out of my favorite artist beating his wife. A couple months ago he came out and basically said "can you guys just let it go already. My personal life is my buisness. Separate the artist form the art blah blah blah" and everyone in the comments was agreeing with him when there was a video of him bashing his wifes face in drunk. And he described what he did in the video as "moving her to the bed so I could do what she asked me". Like bros, the music aint good enough for this to just be his "personal life".

  • @rcdakara
    @rcdakara Рік тому +876

    I generally do go by this standard. The hard part is when you go back and find that the sick parts of that person ARE part of their art. The phrase “age aint nothin but a number” feels too intertwined with R Kelly’s real situation to separate the two. That’s not to say that liking the music makes you bad or supportive of his actions. Dan Schneider putting feet in his shows does get a new context when you know how he felt about those feet. His shows aren’t about that though, so it’s easier to separate. I suppose there’s just a different bar for everyone. Good vid👍

    Separating art from the artist goes two ways. One way is enjoying an artist's work and disregarding their morals or actions. The other way is holding the artist accountable for their morals and actions while putting aside their enjoyment of their art. • @BlueSunStudios1
      @BlueSunStudios1 2 місяці тому +9

      This precisely. How do you separate art from an artist if it was something they poured their innermost selves into? It is understandable to an extent if they are only doing what their superiors tell them to do, but when they truly put what is in their mind into their works, their works are an extension of themselves. Sometimes, you have to recognize that no matter how pretty or beautiful something sounds, the person behind it may have some less inspiring actions that led to their creation and what it means to partake in that medium.

      Ok but he's not saying anti-Semitic sh*t in his music, his music has the typical level braggadocious and questionable lyrics that a lot of rap stars have. You're not wrong but Kanye's music only illustrates his general shittiness and narcissism and I'm not willing to stop listening to someone's music over that if it's as good as Kanye. A good point to think about is that, nowadays, "art" isn't really a solo-project, its actually done by massive teams of people, though the stars of course outshine them. If an artist is cancelled, they've already been boycott; they aren't getting any more films or anything, and will already lose a ton of money. When you choose to not consume you're content, you're not only taking money away from them, but the entire team that made it possible. Like, if you don't choose to watch a movie because an actor is in it, you're taking away from the director, set designer, script writer, costume designer and all that other stuff. If you don't choose to play a game because a voice actor told you to, you're making all the developers, level planners, concept artists and the like lose out to. This is one of the most important reasons why you separate the "art" from the "artists", because often times, it isn't really even fully their own "art" or "effort" in the first place.

    When it comes to me separating art from the artist... it's mixed. Depending on what the media is, I can separate a lot of things from the artist (such as Ren & Stimpy from John K and Toy Story from John Lasseter). Though undeniably, there are some that are just hard to even look at on it's own today.
    Also while we're on about Kevin Spacey, I think A Bugs Life has a really interesting case of artist separation. At least to me, it's in a middle ground where I can still enjoy the movie on it's own, but also (in a point and laugh way) look at the villain Hopper in a new lens with Kevin's actions in context. Especially during the end where Hopper gets eaten by the bird after his last 2 lines being "Are there any little girls in this one too?" and "HELLO GIIIIIRLS!!". Really makes ya think, doesn't it?

Tim Lambesis is roided up psychopath who put a hit on his wife and served prison time for it and I think he should've stayed in prison. That being said, he's still one of the most iconic, metalcore frontmen and Shadows are Security is one of the best records ever put out.

    Excellent points and very well said! I agree that it gets a little trickier when the artist included creepy stuff in their work, for example Dan Scumbag used to sexualize children in the shows he produced and directed. There are clips of Arianna Grande saying and doing suggestive things in the show, that most kids wouldn't get watching it, but now as an adult makes me sick. Plus the whole foot as a mascot Nickelodeon thing 👀👀. Maybe some of those shows are still, at their core, good shows and the acting is great...but do I want my future kids watching them? With all the freaky subliminal crap Dan put in them? Heck no!!
    Edit: Also yeah, the "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number" is another great example of this. Because the warped ideology of the artist in question heavily influenced and is apart of their art..by appreciating the art in these cases we are also, in a sense, supporting that ideology

    • @kalmias
      @kalmias Рік тому +14

      I'm pretty sure that depends on how you think of supporting art. For example, if you liked it and wanted to listen to that music, you could opt not to support him financially and pirate the album, which is illegal. This would be the music equivalent of downloading illegal PDFs of some writer you chose not to support (even if you had the means to do so) for whatever reason or when you illegally stream a movie online because someone who was heavily involved with the process of making it was weird as fuck, so you're like, yeah I don't want to go to the cinema for this dude. However, some people, even if they absolutely hate the person making the content, would never consider the option of going out of their way to break the law to consume some content, so they'd grit their teeth through it and continue buying shit. And on that same side but more extremist-ish, there would be people going out of their way to not interact with said content in any way that would benefit the artist, like they'd ignore everything altogether. And all of that depends on how you think supporting the artist financially correlates with your moral code and whether you would be willing to break it for certain reasons (it's just too good, etc...) or not.

    The personality does matter though. Of course the quality of the art does not change. However, the intent and meaning does change. The character and beliefs of the artist often informs the purpose and meaning of the art they make.

Or they've ignored/defended all other problematic behavior and suddenly act all surprised like they never saw it coming! On the other hand, most ppl don't kill puppies for fun...so yeah I'd be pretty shocked too. And some of the crimes the artists mentioned in this video have been convicted of are on that level. I guess we assume most ppl won't do that and then it's crazy to find out your favorite artist did.

    The difficulty of separation depends on the 'art' made:
    An actor in a movie is just playing a character in the movie. Someone else could have played that same character.
    For paintings and drawings, you only see the art without necessarily seeing the artist, and so one can more easily "overlook" the shittiness of the artist.
    For music, you are directly listening to the artist. The song is more directly linked to the artist than an actor in a movie, for example.

  • @yoonology
    @yoonology Рік тому +14

    I think why most people struggle to separate art from artist is because when you are consuming media from a person who’s done horrendous crimes or basically has done something harmful to people deliberately, it effects the way the people digest the art knowing the person behind it more. It makes sense of course, to not attach yourself or possibly give money to someone who’s actually horrible, but at the same time it’s just as harmless to enjoy media from problematic and toxic creators and artists just as it’s harmless to not support them. simple.

    • @yoonology
      @yoonology Рік тому +14

      @@destiny_5540 It’s not an excuse, it’s literally reality. All media that’s produced and made has a 99% chance that someone bad has made it. Does that mean we should blacklist and hold every company accountable? No, because it’s not realistic. Nobody is going to do the most and search up every background of new artists to just consume when there are classics and bangers being made by artists that are rightfully and obviously bad people. That won’t change peoples aspects of their art become it has nothing connected to it other than the said artist making it. Idk, If someone came up to me and said I should be held accountable for liking a song or a piece of art of someone who’s bad, that just feels like them being entitled and then having a problem about it that they should solve.

    The important of this is that we should NEVER get to feel so close to a celeb because tomorrow maybe apoear nasty sht about them! it depends on whether the art is influenced by the bad things the artist has done.
    If it’s a crime related thing and the art is directly from it, i mean like bad crimes, like CP, then I don’t think it’s right to. I feel like the art will forever be tainted knowing the backstory of it. Like R Kelly and his songs, from the context they are tainted. But if it’s not then no biggie.

    I can relate to the Kevin Spacey part, I love Kevin Spacey movies and I also think he was a great actor, I already heard about the child thing rumors but I never accepted them as true for a long time, every time I watch those movies there's always something to appreciate, because they are really well made, although now I notice, the man used to portray baddies and even psychos, so i guess he knew how to use his mask well, even a recent movie like Baby Driver, I just simply love it because of many details, like camera work, acting, car chase choreography and soundtrack, cause Edgar Wright is a very good director.
    I understand that it can be difficult to separate the art from the artist and even more so if that artist was an "abuser" but I think that Harvey Weinstein produced some of the best films in contemporary cinema, which are great because of their directors, actors, film crew, etc... and for Roman Polanski, I think that Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown are classics, and The Pianist is HIS best movie (even in his own words), more than anything because Adrien Brody gave himself body and soul to his character.
    It's a fact the vast majority of entertainers/artist are weird, only very few turn out to be good people,
    but the vast majority have not been relieved, because they are very famous, they have lawyers and they do not want to lose their throne now, but someday they will be revealed, as for PeD0s, I think that of some I will only be able to enjoy their first works, but that is my decision.
