I don't get why their live performances get so many negative feedback... it's not like Angelakos sings out of tune!

Mainly because their music is difficult transition to live performances as well as other bands because of how stylized it is. That being said, I think they do fantastic live.

this version of the band wasnt great..the 2008-2010 band was amazing. also it doesnt come off right through recording it sounds more "correct" in person
It's because people are stupid and want to hear things exactly like the studio album when what makes it great is the differences and improv . It's why people like jam music or 70s rock live or prince or whatever because of the little idiosyncrasies that make it unique and to me it makes me feel like I'm one of the few who saw it that way that time

This song is amazing album-wise, unfortunately they don't really seem into this.. No energy, movements seem dazed and uninteresting.. also, he sounds almost like he's just talking into the mic, kinda mediocre vocals.. hmmm

this man is SUCH a talented pop songwriter, it's ridiculous.
but the production on that _Gossamer_ record *sucks.*
all that purposely weird, off-kilter, out of time and tune quirks and studio wankery do genuinely drain what should be absolutely gorgeous, simple, honest pop goodness.
let's examine just one of the more heinous production mishandlings on _Gossamer,_ the only record i'm familiar with. _Hideaway_ is probably the best, purest and most melodically simple song on the album. it's got a straight pop melody, chords and lyrics - it's as musically simple as anything Justin Bieber or [Similarly Huge Pop Star Here] has ever done.
yet it starts with a full minute of this overblown wash of fuzzy, pitched-up vocals and a busy, out-of-time synth pad. and that goes for a full _minute_ before the song itself really starts. and even when it does, the song never _feels_ right - the beat always seems off, and it never finds a good groove. it's got a bad feel. and it's a SUCH a shame because the songwriting is _SO good._ his melodies, for what they are, are nearly perfect.
there are hooks and melodic phrases on that _Gossamer_ record that in my opinion puts this guy WAY above and beyond other, similar Terribly Produced Indie Synth-Pop bands like MGMT, Gotye, whatever - whoever else. you can probably tell i'm not a fan of that particular kind of music.
i personally believe that a pop song should be as simple as possible. it should absolutely be able to sit on its own merits and when played on just an acoustic guitar lose none (or very little) of the effect it had on the album. i guess it's a pretty old-fashioned view, but that's just the way i see it. The Beatles you can sing with just a piano or acoustic and get nearly every bit of the song's intentions.
whatever. i just think he torpedoes his songs. and i guess it's on purpose - to make it more "quirky" and weird and off-putting to fogeys like me. but you guys seem to love it as-is, and that's great. i wish i could, too.
well, maybe they didn’t wanna make mainstream pop? gossamer has its place in music history as being a pop/indie pop/electro pop record with a unique mishmash of sounds and instruments and little quirks, and excellent lyrics
Oh, boy. they don't even bother singing the high parts; it's all pre-recorded. It's all just overdubs with lots of auto-tune from the studio. How very magical. What an emotion-filled performance.
Sucks.. It belongs in a low budget movie..
