  • Initially, many of the questions we get in regards to trout spey is whether you need a new reel or if you can use the same reel you use on your single hand. Fred breaks down the size and style of reel that best suites your trout spey rod and some details you may want to consider when choosing a reel.

    I like my Hardy´s Perfect (3 3/8") and Marquis (#7) reels a lot.

@FlyFishingChronicles - is that Marquis #7 a full frame? I've considered picking that up for my new (to me) 3wt 10.5' Boron III but can't seem to find useful pics of any models between #5 & Salmon 1. This would be the Marquis LWT
      Thanks!

Thanks for the presentation.... I thought you would also talk about matching spey reels to spey rods - i.e., weights and whether the reel needs to be several weight sizes larger than the rod weight, or whether the current (modern) reels are better matched weight for weight. Also, please spend more time showing the reel you are talking about, you move so fast that one cannot really appreciate the reel you are focused on. I'm considering my first trout-spey reel - either the Orvis SSR III, or the Sage Trout Spey - for a four weight spey rod, would love to know your thoughts on these reels. I know both are good, it the nuances I guess I'm most interested in.... Thanks Again.

Thanks for watching. Sizing a fly reel to a spey rod is like sizing it for a single hand rod. You need to factor in balance and line capacity. I touched on this in a previous video, but the basic conversion for a trout spey set up is to go up a couple sizes in reel, just like you would go up a couple sizes in line grains (for single hand line use). A 7/8 weight size reel will generally fit nicely on a 3-5 weight trout spey set up. For your 4-weight, the Sage Trout (Full Cage 678) reel would likely be a very nice pairing. I don’t have any experience with the Orivs reel, but the sizing looks just right there as well. I look at fly reels like wrist watches. They all tell time (hold the line), but some of them are much more enjoyable to look at and feel. The best fly reel is the one that makes you happy when you use it.
