Lyla Mev The Mini Witch creates beginner miniature painting tutorials and easy-to-understand guides for Warhammer, dungeons & dragons, and more. My favorite things to paint are sisters of battle, display quality miniatures, and focusing on having fun.
I'm pure old-school. I use the back of my thumb to remove the excess paint. Best texture pallette ever
Indeed!
But imagine the amazing results if you'd glue all those bits onto your thumb!
@@Furzkampfbomber 🤣🤣🤣
Me watching this then hiding my paint covered thumb behind my back.
Me too bro me too..
Laughs in paint covered thumb, wrist and forearm. :D
Ive just been using my girlfriend’s sphinx cat.
The cat seems to enjoy it too.
Real
I tried making a texture palette after watching your video but after painting it black my roommate convinced me to keep it that way as she thought it looked like it was a work of art in its own right. I'll try again, but this time I won't show it to anyone.
Nice i feel like i would have done that too
Turn it into a small diorama
😂
There is an interveiw on the sidetracked podcast with a pro painter who was saying this is not a good idea as the texture bits will clog up with dust and make your drybrush worse
Makes sense.
Not any pro painter. Byron from Artis Opus. The dude that revolutionised drybrushing.
You could just store the texture tray upside down so it can't collect dust...
Genius, I can't believe I haven't seen this before. I will 100% be doing this.
this is just a rip off of the 12 other painting channels that have done this
Great idea I'm going to make a stl file for a drybrush pallet using combined models and textures. That way when it gets all gunked up I can just print another one complete with bits and textures.
Hey, got a link to that file?
I primed a rock with a lot of texture and started using that as my drybrush pallet
I use a heavily textured canvas from dollar general that I also reprime every time I use my airbrush to prime. At least in my mobile hobby set up.
I did this recently and it made a huge difference.
Great tip Lyla!
That is BRILLIANT! I love how much I've learned from you the last couple years.
That solves my left over model pieces from the sprues. Thank you Lyla.
Back of the rubber glove I was wearing did a decent job as well. Still want to build one of these after seeing this and the MS Paints vid.
I think I'd fall in love with the look of the tray at some point and no longer be able to use it 😂
I think you make a new one at that point.
Thanks for explaining this - I had no idea how good this works
This seems clunky, buts it’s actually pretty good idea and reduces risk and reworking your models after not liking the dry brush and contrast paint by applying it to a dummy product of sorts beforehand. Solid advice lady 👍🏽
Smart, love how you used the cookie tray👍 way to upcycle
That's DOPE Lyla. I've got a weekend project.
The diy texture pallet is really cool
It's crazy how many techniques I've picked up from videos like this, I learn the best way to do everything and still do it the old way and then I'm unhappy with the result.
Byron from Artis Opus has a great opinion about this.
Dude, this is simply brilliant! I was wracking my brain on how to do this without buying that expensive Artis Opus texture palette. I mean, I love that thing, but it gets real gross after a while and I just can't stomach buying more of these at their price point.
Erm ... That's actually a really good idea ..that I don't think I've seen before ... Nice work.
That.. is actually quite useful. Thank you
This.. is absolute genius.
Wow, that is such a cool idea!
Cool idea, gonna try this tomorrow
this is a unique tip that i'm gonna use next time i do some painting... thanks :D
And now you have a unique piece of art instead of throwing away your paint!!
I really love this idea!
im doing this. this is genius.
In the meanwhile I m still sharpening the brush with saliva after 20y of painting, just restored one with bare teeth lol
Dang thats a good idea, i dont want to give up my extra bits, but i can totally use some sand or something
Do this on a flat board or something then you are half way done to getting terrain done as well and save money not wasting paint
I was looking for something like this... solid!
This is a game changer.
Genius
Awesome. Subscribing because of how cool this is. Thanks for a great tip.
What a great idea, thank you!
This is such great advice.
I am glad someone thought of this lol
I just flip a mouse pad upside down. It's cheap and works great for me.
Is is a Bona-fide Need to Know tip thank you!
Omg I need this!
I wonder if I can repurpose my resin print supports like this. It won't have a lot of variation in texture, but I haven't printed anything yet and I want to have a plan to reduce the waste.
Have made one and it is great! :-D
Or just use a very soft foundation blending brush !
This was the best "how did I not think of that?" discovery I've had in a while. Genius idea. Going to put all that 3D printer waste to good use.
I like dusty texture actually
Hello, I am very new to this hobby. May I know if your paints are acrylic paints?
Yes!
@@LylaMev Thank you very much for your quick response. I am watching your videos with great attention and will watch all of them. Thank you very much for your efforts.. Greetings from Istanbul/Turkey from the other side of the world
Let's put it all on a tray. Nice!
I just glued a sprue to a piece of cardboard and hit it with some primer it’s not as good looking as yours but it works 😂
Or use hand, paint hand is best palette
I'm not sure why but I don't get on with a texture pallet too well... Without the tissue the Pro Acryl paints feel like they have too much medium to go smudgy for me.
🔥🔥🔥
I was asking my boyfriend for any tricks on how to practice dry brushing. He told me to find some really textured rocks 🪨 he's very clever, I wouldn't have thought of that idea.
Also they are much cheaper then miniature bits
Amazing.....just..umm
Amazing
Brb, nipping my gran’s for a silver tray!
I wish you'd made this as a regular youtube video. These shorts are annoying because 1) they loop 2) I can't save them to rewatch. That said, this is a great idea! Thanks.
It is a video! Check the description box!
The short is cool, but the full video is some good content. Glad I watched both
Is there any downside to using sprew instead of bits? Because I tend to want to save my bits
Go for it! I just don't save my sprews!
?What kind of tray is the best to use
Love the idea.... But with price of miniatures. Makes this the most expensive texture palette
Use dollar store toys!
I used beads, old trinkets, old toys etc. Anything flat and with texture. ;-D
I’m still looking for good brush for drybrushing…
A slightly damp sponge is my method
What do you do after it's covered in drybrushrd paints ? Do you clean it, reprime it, start over ?
You can if you want to! I usually test paint on my hand and then only repaint the palette if I want to test contrast/etc. Colors.
@@LylaMev
I just prime over it the next time I'm priming a set of minis or a model. I never clean it.
Yeee
I could never do this to my unused extra bits
sprues likely work just as well.
I love how simple this is and the idea is smart ya can test different styles before
I'm a lil confused, someone pls explain why shes doing this?
What if i dont though
I still dont understand how it works.
there's either too much moisture and Im just sloppily painting the surface, or there's not enough moisture and Im just sploching gobs of unthinned paint all over the model
Genuis
I love the idea but as an Ork player I am taking emotional damage from the loss so many lootable bits.
The tip: test brushing on a spare model before brushing onto the model you intend to paint.
... how has no one thought of this before?!? /s
The tip:
- Don't use paper towel (like 90% of people do)
- Create a dedicated tray as your 'test spare model'
I don't know why you feel the need to pretend that this isn't very useful to very many people
Cardboard? 🤔
Have an old motherboard? Broken laptop? Rip the motherboard out of that laptop, glue it on to cleaned lid of that laptop and paint black. Instant dry pallet without any fuzz.
Why would I waste perfectly good dakka?
🎉🎉🎉🎉 i have so many unwanted models... they now have a purpose
Hope y'all dont think that she came up with this idea. This has been a thing for quite a few years now. It works, but its a waste of space and a unitasker.
Unfortunately it has been talked about so many times I couldn't find the source, otherwise I would have listed them! If you know the original source, let me know!
That's just stupid enough to be a great idea lol
moisture is more important than the palette.
Or just glue some grit on cardboard and prime that
Yeah, but that’s kind of a waste of good conversion bit that a waste of good bit
this is about the 12th copy of the original
video and yet none give credit to who they robbed it from
He said without telling us who the supposed originator of this idea is. And since when do hobby tips have a kind of copyright to them? Just be glad that knowledge is spreading.
@@mrheisenberg83 "who the supposed originator"
the person who put the first video out lmfao
"Just be glad that knowledge is spreading."
its painting tips not how to feed the world lol
Well fuck, I’m gonna try making this today…
I use a primed fake Lego base plate.
This lady just glued like $300 worth of models to a platter and spray painted them 😂
Dont do this!!! The painted plastic is porous and will absorb paint ans effectively change pigment and consistency of future drybrushes as well as wearing out brushes too
Instructions unclear got kicked out of a tournament because of my tray based army
Honestly people need to stop drying out the paint to "dry" brush
This is nice, but the actual secret is using retarder to moisten the brush.
I wouldn’t call an outriders bike extra, those guys are expensive
It was included in a bits gift basket a fan sent me!
For me its waste of bits
What?
What?
I tried this don’t fall for it it doesn’t work
Actually don't understand
u do not need a texture palette !!!! waste of time, money, glue and paint ...
that's a lot of wasted paint.
