Spot on mate! no shouting or screaming ! I was walking my dog and whilst the lead was fully extended and It failed to return. After opening the case I was scratching my head, I even washed n boiled hoping this would break down the grit build up. I followed this video and understood its mechanical breakdown. A few tips to add. My coil broke in side hence why after re-attaching the recoil failed. I took out the the 2.5 inch broken sheet and bent into place a new part. This was a little tricky as I had to line up and bend everything to neccessary size. My last point, my handle is old, maybe 5+ years and I think it was designed not to be opened, they seem to have built in some internal screws protected by the plastic moulding. Anyway she came good with tough love and my Lulu tried it out! I can confirm it was a success. Nothing like beating the throw away culture and keeping this old lead going.

They are pressed into place. Harder to take apart and fix. They probably figured they could make more money if it was impossible to fix.

I got my flexi leash at the thrift shop so I wasn't in it for too much $$$. Mine is a little different than the one shown. My husband wouldn't attempt to fix it for me so I came to UA-cam! Thank you for giving me the confidence to try fixing it myself. It was ridiculously easy to fix!

My older (different) model Flexi was on it's last legs and finally gave out today. It's replacement won't be here for another week. Found your tutorial and was able to salvage what I have. My primary concern in attempting the repair was having to deal with the "BOING FACTOR". That's when you take something apart and it's goes BOING! with springs and parts going every which way, then having no idea of what goes where. Fortunately I saw your video and was able to complete repairs on mine. Kudos to you Ruberducky6!!! Thanks you!!

I would have completely missed that critical part at 1:57 (centering the spring clip to receive the spool), but once I cranked the spool counter-clockwise, it was a piece of cake! Also, I realized the brake and lock still worked, so upon getting the initial tension, I just put the lock on, so no clip needed. Thanks for taking the time to make your great video! On a fixed income, I can't afford to buy much anymore, but videos like yours keep life manageable. Much appreciated. :)

I am glad the few minutes I spent have helped. I am not an aficionado with video stuff and i made this by putting my phone on top of the computer monitor for a top down view. Good idea on using the lock. Hope it helped.

Our flexi leash stopped working yesterday evening, when fully extended.
Thanks to your tutorial, as I'd never dismantled that kind of stuff ! Well, it's not a very technological one lol
In our case, the spring was broken in the center, where it fits in the plastic thing.
We just bent it again, and voila ! The leash is saved ;-)

My dad and I kept fixing my retractable leashes because my puppy chewed through all of them cheap-expensive. We did what you did here but, added 24" of thin steel cable coated with vinyl to the end (about normal walking distance) in the shape of a bicycle lock cable which detaches because we also take my old cat out for walks and he doesn't chew the leash. Any leash works good with this extension. If you don't want to make one yourself look up "car dog restraint". It looks exactly like that.

After watching 4 videos, I was able to trip upon yours. I just wish UA-cam would have had your video higher up in the Que! Now after watching your video (to understand the concept of the return spring and the windings), I now have TWO working Flexi leashes back in the game! (I used 3 spins vice 2 on both).
    Two Thumbs UP!!!
P.S. our newest one had those darn Friction Dowels inserted. Pain in the bottom to release the 2 sides, but try to pry on the inside of the handle. Once you hit the sweet spot, it just pops open at the handle, and you just pry the rest open.

Nice 1 ruberducky6 my 9 month old G.S.D. took aprox 25 seconds to bite through the top weight 60kilos Flexi that had only bought 2 months ago after he did the same to the 35kilo flexi before he was 35k to, he is now only 37k to so flexi your anti bite leashes are not near what you claim when a GSD disagrees with his/her leash even only in play as mine was and also my present GSD is my 13th one having had this breed my whole life, now it's back to normal unbitable soft chrome chain leash and check chain that has served for many years even the leather handle a 1/4 of the price and 100% never mind at ease as you know you won't lose your Dog off it or to a passing vehicle etc to.

Great demo you did. I wish I'd watch it before starting to work on it. My spool has no tension left, I removed the cover/cap and re-inserted the wire in the groove but I still did not have great tension, I therefore removed the middle portion of the spool and the metal spool was exposed some unravelled but I put it back in but I can't seem to get the tension even if I put the curved part of the metal tape inside the groove. It is a 26 ft leash. Can I roll the metal spool inside the retractable mechanism a few times around the post, or did i completely messed it up.?. Would you have any other suggestions.

    • @mcss941
      @mcss941 10 років тому

i had the same problem but after 30 min of struggling with the spool i figured it out. unlike in the vid, my spool needed far more than three rounds. but at the beginning, my spool was in the same state as yours, so yours probably still has hope of working, just try to approach to it differently.

I have (had) a Flexi Standard 3, and the spring end was different than the one you showed. Mine was more simply bent and not as notched as the one you showed -- if that makes any sense. I was able to get it back into the spindle slot, but something was jacked up and it did not have any tension after rotating it. I think the other end of the spring had somehow become detached. Mine is going into the trash unfortunately. :(

This video helped. However, my flexi had three internal screws holding the two halves of the cover together, but with no way to access them. I had to take out the two externally accessible screws, just like you, but then I had to use a flathead screw driver and a lot of power to force open the two halves, stripping the threads of the internal screws. Super annoying.

But I had a very difficult time opening the case and when I did, I had the same experience as Jo K - the spring and piece that regulates length fell out. I have...Only one problem....
I have a button that stops the leash from extending even more. However, it's broken.
Well.. not necessarily broken.. just flimsy. It's suppose to lock when I push it down, and unlock when I push it again. It tends to lock fine but when I press it again, it's a castle to unlock :/

The Flexi retractable leash we have has no place for screwdrivers, no openings anywhere. It's the Big Red one with no place to open. It no longer RETRACTS. Trying to find a site for help, but can't find any. Ready to just break it open and try something. Very frustrating as we haven't used it that much.

Try making sure that no stickers are covering the screw holes. Sometimes manufactures will do this for aesthetic reasons. If this is the case, I would guess that the screw locations are the same. Good luck.

Somehow one of the screws would not come out. I forced it open and of course the metal coil tension inside the wheel exploded (that you did not take apart). I'm guessing I'm screwed here because to recoil and set the tension will be very difficult. Your disc wheel has a screw on it but mine did not and it popped open very easily on this old unit. I write this in case anyone else tries this to be careful opening the container.

My dog's leash just broke and it's not the lead, but the spring itself. Not sure if it actually broke or is out of adjustment, as I haven't taken it apart yet, so we'll see.
If it's not repairable, she will just get a new leash. I'm not mad about it - that leash has lasted 20 years and 3 dogs.

Ours was a heavy duty Thunder something brand. It was not the same inside as your model. I do not recommend trying to repair one like ours. We finally got it to pop open and as I was trying to rewind the leash, the metal 1/2" spring exploded out of the track. It flew with some force up to my face. Thankfully I had my glasses on or I could have lost my vision. As it is, one urgent care visit later I have the cut on my nose steri-stripped together, the cut on my cheek will heal on its own, my lenses on my glasses are scratched and being replaced. Would have been much cheaper to go buy another leash, which we had to do anyway.

Thank you - super helpful! If your model does not have screws, you can gently pry it apart with a small-size slot screwdriver. For my small model there are are four pins that hold it together, so you can wiggle the screw driver in at those four points. I started with the pin on the handle. When you're done you can just line it up and press the pins back into their slots. You can see where the pins are in this video : ua-cam.com/video/YDj7uduNXjQ/v-deo.html

Except I cant tell exactly how to remove the central "manhole cover" on the spool that the cord wraps around. it looks impossible to twist off and remove and it the primary step that is preventing me from rewrapping the clock spring . I would like to thank Kong brand for designing their leash nearly identical, but with many additional screws that can't be undone. Case cannot be opened without breaking it. Will not recommend their products.

The work you're doing drops below the camera's line of sight too many times. And your constant groaning ahmmm's are quite annoying. And the most important part (fastening the clip back onto the line)? You end the video and leave 237.532 people out here hanging. Thanks. For nothing!
