What I mean is you would get math but there wasn’t no push for people to go searching just the more apt. It was a toxic environment and what made me not care for math. Luckily I found it on my own.
Careless mistakes all throughout my math classes was a different beast! Forget not understanding the concepts! I was making so many careless mistakes! Some negative I forgot or something! Adding wrong or multiplying wrong!
My problem was that most of the time I had no problem understanding the concepts. My problem was making careless mistakes on exams. Careless mistakes would always cost me some points.
Math has historically been something that I struggled with in school, where in my mind, I saw math, and higher education as a whole as a means to an end. Four years ago, me and my terrible attitude got dismissed from college because I figured that a bare minimum was too much effort on my part. This past January, I reenrolled in college and I discovered that math is something I genuinely enjoy, and now I intend to transfer to a four year university to continue studying mathematics. So far I have finished the Single Variable Calculus series in the winter and spring semesters, and with statics and dynamics in the summer, these past 8 months has been nonstop math and I’m having a great time here. My older sister is a mathematician and she did warn me not to overdo it, and watching this fun lil video got me starting to worry about this upcoming fall semester, which will be the most intensive courseload I have put myself through with physics E&M, Multivariable Calculus, and by luck of a registrar error: Intro to Differential Equations with Linear Algebra. I’ll definitely consider warnings from actual professional mathematicians, but all that math won’t learn itself
Really great vid! When i was in elementary school in Poland, I had this very strict math teacher and I struggled with fractions. I just couldn't understand it and my mom hired a tutor to help me a bit on the weekends. I was just so put off by math that it was my worst subject ....till I came to the USA with my family and started High School. All of the sudden I had new teachers who explained things really well and took their time. All of the sudden things just made sense and everything just sort of clicked. When I signed up for AP Calculus, I became a math tutor myself to help struggling students. What a confidence boost that was.

What I have found helps is to take a higher perspective on the problem you are having difficulty with. The human perspective confuses many simple problems, asking you to apply mathematics concepts to every day life. Strip the specifics of the question and ask what fundamentals are at play here. Your goal should be to make it as inhuman as possible in hard input/output mathematics language. It will ALWAYS help to change your perspective, that was the engineering students advantage as they tackled the problems as engineers. Also, F.Y.I. sorcerer, Your fill light is a little hot. Yes, spending many hours on math day after day does have a tendency to make you feel a bit cloistered, Taking breaks is an important part in learning math. Sometimes when I am stuck on a problem or a proof it helps is I take a break for a while and come back to it later. There have been many instanced where taking a break helped when I was stuck on a problem, proof, etc.
I am 54. Math is so relaxing, and meditation for me with self study. I love it. School, is stressful though. Even though I went back and going now. It is not as fun. It is so fast paced, and cramming. Math is not easy for me, I am not good at it, but I love it. One of the few things I really enjoy in life.
The sorcerer speaks the truth, I have had similar experiences in physics: too obsessed on something (research paper, solving PDEs) for ages, then all of the sudden a simple walk under the sun looks fantastic haha

I've been there and yes, sometimes it can get very frustrating and it becomes easy to burn ourselves out. Relax, try and stick with it, take breaks, everything will fall into place.

When i first started college i was so focused on trying to hurry through it and keep my grades up, but was so burnt out and depressed. Then I got pregnant and waa forced to take a break, now I'm back and only taking one math class at a time so i can focus on my baby and focus on the material. It's taking me a lot longer, but I've never been happier and its easier for me to learn the material cause I'm pacing myself and focusing on one class.
I can't make friends I struggle in making them I was bullied as a child so I have a lot of past trauma Didn't have anything but books infront of me that time So I am glad to study math all the time Math over friends. Thanks for your advice

There was some times, I always had only A+ in highschool in Germany and as I started maths major in 2020, where everything was online, I just messed up every first sem subjects. Analysis 1, Linear algebra 1, computer mathematics, I just messed up everything. I was so disappointed on me because footballer playing football, professionals doing their professional things and I wanted do maths really well but I just messed up. I started doing nothing, smoked weed everyday and playing league of legends and trying to get diamonds, which I reached. Two years long, I just did not do maths, and living like a subhuman and there was a teacher in my highschool who thought I am kinda genius and I met him again in the school and that was the moment where I thought I wanted to try once again to not disappoint people who believed me. I began to work on me and maths and passed first subject Analysis 1 with A+ and other courses like linear algebra and computer mathematics, numerical analysis, complex analysis and ODE... and I noticed that only thing which blocks me is the thought, that I am something special. Of course, most of people who watch this video is probabliy special in maths but I hope you guys do not get hurt like me by thinking that you must be special. For me, everyone is not special but has great power to be special at some point through hard work. I hope you guys do better than me and not stupid shit like me.

I ll give u some things to consider when It comes to both subjects: Physics: the more difficult one in my opinion. U need higher level math. U have the option to go into research, if u want to get a phd. U definetly need passion for both physics and math.. Mechanical engineering: the more common approach. A career booster. Also difficult maths and physics, but not quite as theoretical. U should be interested in computers (mainly hardware) and in creative ideas..
I only had Algebra in 9th grade, and I didn't like it. I was in a vocational curriculum the remainder of public school. After high school I enlisted in the Air Force and started night school at the urging of Air Force counselors. I think I was influenced by my roommate who was taking math courses, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to try one. From that moment on, I couldn't stop taking and thinking about math. I eventually got a BS in Math using the G.I. Bill. I still can't stop thinking about math!

What do you think about math that is taught in other countries? China is renowned for their math course, but is it real? My experience is that math is basically the same. However, the approach is different. It is said that in China, the students are taught that if they have the tools to solve the problem, they can solve the problem. In other countries children think that their ability to solve the problem is based on their capacity to solve the problem. That is, they can solve the problem if they are intelligent enough. What do you think?
Its when you do the maths completely rigorously that's when it takes serious amounts of time. If you just skate over the surface you can cover lots more ground, and that's maybe why the engineers did better.
I find these stories about university professors and lecturers getting emotionally invested in their student's performance, angry even, telling their class to "step it up", so...strange. I'm not a math student but in STEM, studying in Germany and I've never experienced this nor heard stories like that. Whether you do well and apply yourself or you don't, nobody cares. Going into my Senior Year of my Physics Degree, I felt "off my game". The Senior Year is when you need to *ace* everything: course work, Senior Project, GRE's (General & Subject), letters of reference, etc.. You need to be BAMF to get into Grad School. I took a formal leave of absence and worked in restaurants (in the kitchen, where it's safe) because my college town was also a tourist town, and it's a beautiful place. I'm going to enjoy living here while I can. My restaurant experience taught me how to deal with schedule-driven mayhem in a "professional environment". Enrolled a year later and kicked ass: it was a great year. That was in the mid 80's. Since then, "Life's been good to me so far." ~ Joe Walsh. You're not "failure" if you need to take a break to get your act together, and drive on with your goals. You *are* a failure if you go into a hard-core academic/professional situation *knowing* that you are "off your game"!
It’s hard to realize how much of an investment and sacrifice becoming an engineer or a mathematician really is. Sometimes I feel I could say… f#$t it… and make my life easier. But somehow I got this thing in my head that I have to push myself to become part of this abstract world no matter what. Even if half the time I feel a fraud or not good enough… or that I’m only doing this because of the shadow of my father. Anyways, I just did the exact opposite of what the video wants us to do 😂😂😂😂😂. Another person just vomiting his thoughts into the internet. I’ll go back to my anonymity where we truly are safe.
It’s 5am in Tbilisi, Georgia where I live. Stayed overnight to run, rethink life and try to project on what is truly important to be doing. It’s agonizing trying to find an answer on who we are and where are our boundaries. Personally I feel like ignoring lust and temporary pleasures is one of the keys to find inner peace. Its when you do the maths completely rigorously that's when it takes serious amounts of time. If you just skate over the surface you can cover lots more ground, and that's maybe why the engineers did better.

I find these stories about university professors and lecturers getting emotionally invested in their student's performance, angry even, telling their class to "step it up", so...strange. I'm not a math student but in STEM, studying in Germany and I've never experienced this nor heard stories like that. Whether you do well and apply yourself or you don't, nobody cares. Is that an american thing?

Typically. The term "complex variables" is in analogy with such terms as "real function theory", or, "the theory of real-variable functions", which are more classical terms denoting certain traditional real analysis curricula as, topics tend to be principally centered around classes of functions themselves (e.g., infinite series, integral equations of functions, differential equations of functions, etc.). In complex analysis, it is conventional in many undergraduate curricula that topics tend to branch from homomorphic functions as typically described by the Riemann-Cauchy differential equation. As long as the main objects of study makes use of topological filter bases at the very least (i.e., limits of integrals), then we have analysis.
When Mr. Math Sorcerer started the video by saying "One of the courses you take is called Complex Variables" I wanted to say "...or Complex Analysis, or Functions Of A Complex Variable, or something like that." Kind of a nitpick, but since you asked...

Going into my Senior Year of my Physics Degree, I felt "off my game". The Senior Year is when you need to *ace* everything: course work, Senior Project, GRE's (General & Subject), letters of reference, etc.. You need to be BAMF to get into Grad School. I took a formal leave of absence and worked in restaurants (in the kitchen, where it's safe) because my college town was also a tourist town, and it's a beautiful place. I'm going to enjoy living here while I can. My restaurant experience taught me how to deal with schedule-driven mayhem in a "professional environment".
Enrolled a year later and kicked ass: it was a great year. That was in the mid 80's. Since then, "Life's been good to me so far." ~ Joe Walsh.
You're not "failure" if you need to take a break to get your act together, and drive on with your goals. You *are* a failure if you go into a hard-core academic/professional situation *knowing* that you are "off your game"!
It’s hard to realize how much of an investment and sacrifice becoming an engineer or a mathematician really is. Sometimes I feel I could say… f#$t it… and make my life easier. But somehow I got this thing in my head that I have to push myself to become part of this abstract world no matter what. Even if half the time I feel a fraud or not good enough… or that I’m only doing this because of the shadow of my father. Anyways, I just did the exact opposite of what the video wants us to do 😂😂😂😂😂. Another person just vomiting his thoughts into the internet. I’ll go back to my anonymity where we truly are safe.

It’s 5am in Tbilisi, Georgia where I live. Stayed overnight to run, rethink life and try to project on what is truly important to be doing.
It’s agonizing trying to find an answer on who we are and where are our boundaries. Personally I feel like ignoring lust and temporary pleasures is one of the keys to find inner peace.
