Hello! I just committed to UChicago for diving and I was wondering about your experience with safety on campus? In light of recent events I have been seeing a lot of different information and I was wondering if you had any specific thoughts being a student currently? Hi Spencer! Welcome to UChicago & congratulations! There have been a lot of tragic events over the past few days and even throughout the past year that have been super disheartening to the University & greater Hyde Park community. I have personally not experienced anything on campus that has made me as an individual feel unsafe, but I know that’s not the same situation everyone has. Lately there have been some protests and movements by students on certain safety measures and I think a lot of them- like more coverage for free Lyft rides & campus shuttles as well as safety training for students & faculty- but I do worry that the push for more armed police officers on campus is likely to make our campus less safe for minority students, especially Black men on campus. Luckily there are a lot of local safety resources that aren’t involved with the police, and when police need to be involved it’s possible to go in person to avoid bringing them into the community. Overall, I wouldn’t say UChicago is any less safe than other urban schools, but that doesn’t make the recent events any less tragic.
