    Wonderful video! The 4449 is a beautiful locomotive in both design and scheme. And I can never get enough of the Deschutes River Canyon. It's simply breathtaking. FYI, are you aware that the BLM access road on the east bank of the river is the former ROW of the Deschutes River Railroad? It was an offspring of the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation Co., a component of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, itself a subsidiary of the UP. Both railroads were in a race to get to Bend, OR. Northern Pacific won. Leaving the canyon at Trout Creek was a wise decision, I guess.

    I was there in 2006 when me and my family paced Daylight 4449 from Portland to Bend. Not only that I got to see Daylight 4449 in person which Orange is my favorite color since Norfolk and Western J class 611 featured her red skirting, but traveling to Oregon is one of the most memorable trips me and my family ever gone to! Of all the steam chases I’ve done around the country, the 4449 chase in 2017 was my WORST one ever! The outdoor temp was 102 degrees that day, which constantly overheated the Daylight’s solid journal bearings. Which resulted in it running 10mph for most of the way to Bend, OR, and running almost 9 hours late! The most miserable train chasing day I’ve ever had. And I only got two good photos for the entire 200+ mile chase.

    Bit of a shame that 2012 & 2017 would be the last times 4449 ran on mainline trackage. After 2018 when she was used for filming Train Time, who knows what her future will be like seeing she can't do mainline excursions without ptc or on the tracks used for the Christmas trains due to her size and weight. While she's not a favorite of mine I do still like the engine and have been questioning its future for sometime now. Same with 700 & 197. Only time will tell for what's coming next.

    It really stinks the UP is still weird about foreign motive power on their lines, especially steam. The track that the 4449 runs on now is a short line they use for their ORHF Holiday Express, and all of the mainline track through Portland is under the control of the Union Pacific. Missing opportunities for memorable excursions and meet ups with other steam engines like the 700, 844, heck even 2816 or 4014.

    • @anb7408
      @anb7408 Місяць тому

      It has more to do with Doyle McCormack not having a good relationship with UP. You can read the history on that “checkered” relationship elsewhere on the internet and even Trains magazine.

    • @louistallarigo5589
      @louistallarigo5589 29 днів тому

      @@anb7408 Yeah that makes sense. The way that the railroads run now is kinda sad when it comes to preservation and positive promotions of the railroads. Relationships like this in my opinion are key to making sure that people still get interested in the railroads and make sure they last for many more generations.
      I got the chance to meet Mr. McCormack when they brought the Daylight to Train Festival 2009 when I was 7. Funny enough, I got a letter from him in 2020 after I became an Eagle Scout saying he remembered me and sent me two autographed photos of the AFT 4449 in 1976 in St. Louis.
