Psychology and what we hear is a funny thing. When trying to decide on which to get, the 10" sounded better so I ordered one online yesterday. Now when I listen, the 12" sounds better to me, LOL.
Funny! The 10" is different by virtue of a smaller speaker, different speaker build and smaller cabinet. I love the 10" Super Bee size but when I made this video, I felt like the 12" was louder and fuller at a lower volume knob setting on the amp. That's mostly why I went with the 12" Super Bee. I Love it, but I miss the smaller cabinet and portability of the smaller 10" version. When do you get your amp? email me for more dialogue if you like. I am itching to order a 10" again to compare and make a current decision. My email is gairman1@gmail.com
I think the obvious decision is to play though both amps at the same time! But seriously, they are both beautiful sounding amps. The fullness of the 12” version is nice but when you played over the backing loop, I preferred the midrange character of the 10”, at least in the UA-cam audio recording. How it sounds in the room may be different. You can’t go wrong either way.
Thanks for weighing in. I am torn. I prefer the size and weight of the 10" Super Bee for practicality. But it is borderline in terms of fullness for some shows I do. the added size and weight of the 12" version just gives me another amp the same size as what I have. But what a great sound!! I love the tone of this amp. I need to do some comparisons to my Tone King Imperial MKII, Fender 64 Deluxe Reverb custom handwired and Louis Electric Columbia Reverb. I am however so totally impressed with the Carr Super Bee. Especially the 1x12.
@@majortwang I need to compare more directly to give an informed opinion. but the Super Bee 3 band tone stack is incredibly well voiced and more versatile than Princeton or Deluxe. I love the musicality of the super Bee. The 12" is more capable than the 10" in my experience. It is louder, fuller, maybe a little more articulate? It seems to exhibit more of an open. character and is louder at a lower setting on the volume dial than the 10".
Wow yeah the 12 adds so much more mids-detail and low frequencies! I agree with one of the commenters who said the 10 is recording better in this room/mic. At least I enjoyed the cleaner, scooped nature of the 10 over the 12.
I bought a 12” Super Bee and am wondering if the 10” would serve me better? I have a local friend with a 10” super bee. We will get together and revisit.
@@gair1944 Any update? I'm choosing between 10 and 12 and only use at home at moderate to low volume. I already have a 12" Carr Mercury V and 12" Carr Mercury 8watt, but wanted to get something more in the Fender blackface direction for low volume playing at home. This was such a great video btw! Your demos and playing are always fantastic.
@@Think_Up Thanks for the nice words. I am going to revisit the 10" again, maybe this week. I love the 12", it's a great amp. But the 10" is a lot easier to carry and most of the places I play, I just need a decent stage volume. So the 10" might be the way to go after all. You can email me directly at gairman1@gmail.com
@@gair1944 I pulled the trigger on a 10" Super Bee today. I think I will give that a shot since I own 2 other 12" Carrs already and since I'm such a home, low volume player. I also got some input on a forum that the 10" version is improved greatly with the installation of a Lil' Buddy hemp cone speaker, but I will try it with the stock speaker for a while at first.
I watched another demo of the 10 and 12” and was very glad I got the 12”. However your comparison did the 10” speaker better, you get a very nice sound out of the 10 that I like better at times
Mr. Gary, whenever I get to thinking I want a new amp, you're already ahead of me! :) Great video, both amps are sounding great. Could be me, but the 10" is sounding a little more open/dynamic. I would guess it's getting further into its happy volume. The 12" seems to match it further up the volume knob. Tough choice, man... happy shopping!
Hi John, Interesting that the amp and power is the same for both amps. The only difference is the speaker size, cabinet size and weight. Yes I had to push the volume and eq higher on the 10" version to achieve the fullness I got with the 12" Super bee with fewer clicks on the volume knob. The 12" version actually sounded more open and seemed to breath a little easier. I love them both. There is a sweetness to the smaller 10" Super Bee. It is 7 lbs lighter weight too. But I was nervous it might leave me wanting. So I found a Tweed 12" Super Bee and bought it. So far I LOVE it ...and the sick part? ...I still want a 10" Super Bee too. But that would be pure gluttony. If I find a deal on a used 10" Super Bee, maybe I'll snag it and see if both make the cut or if I gravitate to one more than the other ...which would mean I would sell the one I don't play. Time will tell. I am doing several gigs in the next 7-10 days so I'll get some real-world data.
@@gair1944 It really helped to hear both like that - but I'm sure you're hearing much more in the room. Tens alway seem a little more direct and punchy (faster?) to me. Seems like this follows that. These are both pretty rare beasts since the supply issues - so lucky you got one. There's no harm in having two - the struggle is real! 😄 Haha! Cheers!
Hello Gary!! I received my Super Bee 10inch today!! Wow, so much flexibility!! I am wondering if you have tried different pedals? boost or od? ( not that you really need them )...thank you!! Love your videos!
Congratulations on your 1x10" Super Bee. I hope you love it. I have a number of OD pedals.Because the Super Bee is 10W, some of them can push it a bit too hard so it's a matter of taste and volume. I have Analogman King of Tone, Vemuram Jan Ray, JHS Morning Glory V4, Vemuram Shanks and Greer Lightspeed. Most of these are based on bluesbreaker OD pedals that are more natural without the midrange hump Tube screamers deliver. Just depends what want.
@@gair1944 Thank you Gary!! I have a bunch too!! , i've been playing plugged straight in the last couple of days , and am pretty happy with the tones i'm getting...crazy fun amp!!
@@telefrk49 Hey Marc, Email me anytime at gairman1@gmail.com - Love hearing about your journey. Sometimes I wonder if I should have kept the 10" Super Bee. I truly love my 1x12". Sometimes I just want a smaller, lighter amp for those shows that are intimate, or I can mic it.
Great review, it was very helpful. Please let me know your thoughts once when you compare the 12" Super Bee with the Tone King MKII. I'm considering purchasing one of these amps for home use only, because both have attenuators. I'm leaning more towards the Super Bee because its power (10W) should be all I need vs. the 20W Tone King. Thanks!
just my opinion but the 10" seems to be recording better in this setup - what's the recording interface? They sound VERY different through quality headphones, and I bet they sound very different again in the room. I'm seriously looking at getting one of these & I was all set on the 12" which no doubt has more range, but the 10" recorded better here I feel & surprised me
Hey thanks for listening. This was a major dilemma and I ultimately found a used 1x12 Carr Super Bee that I bought. The 10" had an intimacy and sweetness with its smaller speaker and smaller cab. The 1x12 presents itself as a more capable gigging amp in terms of playing in a mix and sounding bigger and fuller. (So I based my choice on that criteria) I was just recording this with an HTC One M8 Video recorder with its built-in mic. The recorder compresses in a musical way but it's not the last word in terms of recorded tone. I find it reasonably honest and accurate however.
@@gair1944 Very interesting, I wonder if your HTC mic is just better suited to the 10" in this room. You'd obviously anticipate the 12" to be more versatile in more contexts. They both sound really nice, just very different in this room, which in itself is a significant point! Nice & useful comparison 👍🏽
Superb playing!!!!………as usual
That was fantastic very well played, thank you
Thank You Andy
