Extracting and preparing non-recycled materials to build stuff also takes energy, and so do trucks to bring non-sorted material to landfill. The only way to reduce that energy altogether is to reduce and re-use. Don't buy stuff you don't need, or buy in smaller quantities to avoid waste, share with your neighbors, donate stuff you don't use anymore. Unfortunately this society is not driven by principles such as reduce & re-use, but by manipulative companies suggesting that phones, smartwatches, TVs and even cars need to be replaced every 6 months. I'm exaggerating and it doesn't apply to everyone, but you get the idea.
