I think it’s really interesting to see the contrasting experiences between her and someone like Jenette McCurdy. Jenette’s been really outspoken about her bad experience of being a child star and how it pushed her into an eating disorder and a lot of it has to do with her mom. Her mom was the one pushing her into it, she didn’t even want to do it, but it was like at first her mom probably just wanted to live vicariously through her and then it became a matter of “well you’re the main bread winner of this house”. But Jodie’s parents sound really cool and like they were just helping their child do what she loved to do.
I think first and foremost it boils down to the parents. Because of course if you go into this thinking “I want my child to be famous no matter what” you’re going to allow some horrific shit to happen to your kid and turn a blind eye to it, but if you’re actually responsible for your child you’re going to be on guard about the predatory and exploitative people out there. I mean I think there should still be something in place to protect kids that are in the former situation: things like better labor laws and maybe even something saying that the child has to be supervised by some sort of social workers whenever they’re alone with cast and crew that aren’t their immediate family but idk really. I just wish kids wouldn’t be ruined by some monster in Hollywood.
