The Polymaker spool adapter is designed to help your cardboard spools print more consistently by reducing friction and creating a structured rolling surface. The spool adapter clips around the face of the Polymaker cardboard spool and is fixed in place by three small tabs that grab the edge of the spool and a location pin that stops the adapter from spinning.
The adapter can help your 3D printer by reducing the rolling friction when mounted both internally or externally on almost every design of the spool holder. One benefit that the cardboard spool provides is durability. The spool can be dropped off a table without shattering, unlike our previous plastic spools. However, this bends or deforms the cardboard face of the spool leading it to unspool with a wobble. The spool adapter can solve this issue by providing a solid circular rolling surface to interface between the spool and spool holder.
Multi-material stations that have assisted unspooling are often designed with small intricate gears that can get jammed by dust particles after hundreds of hours of printing. The spool adapter can eliminate the problem of dust build-up and allows Polymaker spools to be compatible with all multi-material stations, such as Bambu Lab's AMS or Ultimaker's Material Station.
Our spool adapter design is by no means perfect, so we encourage you to remix and redesign it to suit your needs where necessary. This design was inspired by our community who have already designed and posted many similar rings and adapters. We are releasing the .STEP files as well as the .STL which will allow you to make some adjustments easily in the CAD software of your choice and everything is open source.
We tried to keep our design as light as possible, so it can be printed quickly and efficiently without using too much filament. You should be able to print one spool adapter in 40 mins, using 30g of filament and it should be able to be reused on many Polymaker spools. To lengthen the life of your spool adapter we suggest popping the location pin out first before removing the edge clips to reduce the stress on the adapter when changing spools. The design was intended to be printed in PLA however a much tougher material choice will result in a longer life for your spool adapter. Try PolyLite™ PETG, PolyLite™ ASA or PolyMax™ PLA for a spool adapter that can roll through the kilos.
    Recommended Printed Settings:
    Nozzle: 0.4mm
Infill: 100% / Solid top & bottom layers
    Perimeters / Shells: 2

I personally just put electrical tape on the outside. Very quick and easy to install and doesn't waste filament. Also creates a better grip. And is very cheap to buy.

This has been the primary reason why I haven't gotten the AMS unit for my P1P yet. Glad to see some steps are being taken by Polymaker. Really hope Bambu does something as well. Good job!

there are ways around it. This being one. Replacement (from the community) "tub" to be able to use different spool types and sizes. Then there's the spool winding thing.

I notice you never show the AMS lid fully closing. Will these fit with the lid shut and latched? All of the other adapters I have tried hit the lid. I’ve always printed with Polymaker, but I’m struggling to make it work with my new X1C…

From what I have heard, some AMS units have a tighter tolerance on the lid closing than others. Its a really close fit on mine but it doesn't touch. There might be some adjustments you can make to the spacing.

@@Polymaker You show the lid being closed but don't show the spools working afterwards. I've tried other printed adapters and so far, haven't been able to print with the lid closed (I'm certainly willing to give yours a try too). It looks like the Hydra mod for AMS can provide more clearance but that's a lot of work just to allow me to use a work-around for cardboard spools.

@@KenRossPhotographyI’ve got the hydra unit installed on my AMS, and any spool adapters I’ve printed currently hit the lid and bind when closed, which is how I need to keep my AMS as my indoor humidity is 50-55% on the coast. I do have a workaround I read online that’s worked perfect however. Wrap the edge of a cardboard spool with electrical tape and it’s instantly AMS compatible. It’s worked super for me this far. After 3 spools I’ve got the application of the tape down and it only takes about 1 minute per side to apply.

Cardboard spools are useless on AMS units.
Moving to cardboard is a wrong saving by the manufacturer: you saved some $, but you loose so many potential clients (like me), when we search BambuLab filament alternatives for our printers.
Instead, it would be smarter make, like BBL does, reusable plastic spools with refiling cardboard option (for any one who cares environtment, like you say).
I maintaint BBL, and go to SUNLU, eSUN filament options with plastic spools for urgencies/prices, while you have no plastic option.

@@Polymaker Then it makes even less sense the shift to cardboard.
In terms of sustainability in first place one has to try to RE-USE. If it is not possible, in the second try, Recycle.
So, the most ecological solution in this application should be:
Plastic reusable spool (recyclable plastic) + refilling spools with least packaging possible.
Cardboard spools are NOT Reusable, so you are forced to generate unnecessary waste. Recyclable, yes, BUT WASTE.
