    In this video I show the steps and procedures necessary to remove and replace as well as diagnose a bad ford transfer case motor, Is motors can be found on F1 50s Lincoln navigators and for explores. Years 1997 through 2002.     I have a 96 F-150 that will go into 4 high but not low. It clicks a few times and turns the 4x4 light off on the dash but wont go into low range. Is there a control module under the dash that i would hear clicking?

    I have a 2000 F350 with manual hubs but not going into four wheel drive... checking the motor on the transfer case but how far does it turn if it’s working properly? Mine seem to move about 1/4”.

    So have 2002 F250 7.3 6 speed manual w/Manual hubs and turn selector switch on dash and 4x4 light comes on the dash but not getting engagement of hubs turning what you think issue could be ?

    Awesome video, thanks. I have an 07 F150 that shifts into 4WD Lo but not 4WD Hi. I'm thinking it's either the Transfer Case switch motor or maybe the switch. In your video, you state that you measure voltage across the two larger wires. I "think" you said, one is positive and one is negative in Hi and the opposite in Lo. Is that correct? I know it's shifting into Lo because the light comes on and you can totally tell by the way it drives. But in Hi, it doesn't seem like it's doing anything and the light doesn't come on on the dash. Do you know where the switch is that turns that light on? Is it in the motor? I know the light works because it comes on when I turn on the key. I think the vacuum portion is good because it goes into Lo. Any tips for me? I'm thinking about putting it into 4Hi, then pulling the motor to see what position the shaft is in, but before that, I'd like to check the voltage.

    I have a 1997 f150 4.6 4x4 suprcab I recently changed the GEM modul because it started acting up I have the electric 4x4switch I was driving and everything seemed fine I stopped at a store and when I went back to the truck it started normal but it feel like its stuck in neutral no reverse no drive nothing truck wont move when I put it back to park it makes a buzzing sound and 4x4 switch is getting no power I check all the fuses they are all fine I'm thinking the new gem module could have a faulty 4x4 part? Because 4x4 does not light up on dash they told me the transfer case is stuck in neutral any idea and suggestions is appreciated.

    97 Expy does not go into 4L, no low range light on dash. Could this be the shift motor, the actuator solenoid, or maybe the GEM?

    My new motors negative connection was not drilled through in the factory. Will it hurt it if I drill into the connection on the part? Advice?

    If you can remove the pin from the connecter why did you cut the wire?Wouldn't it be better removed and inserted in the empty space provided in the new connecter.

    My 97 clicks but want lock in I used to take the hot battery post off for ten minutes and it would lock now nothing just clicks should I just change it or check it

    I wonder if you could help me with a 4.6 Triton that's been sitting in my field behind my barn for about 2 years and a good motor at the time so I'm willing to risk that it's still good I would like to know the proper protocol when taking the motor from outside storage what is the procedure I'm going through something like this with no time rents nest you kn manifolds what would be the step by step to bring this thing back to life after being in outside storage fore just over two years I understand the manifolds with the rats nest. So anything that is basic protocol into bringing something like this back to life would be much appreciated

    My F-150 2002 was working good. Got home and was going to the store. Now it will not go into drive or reverse and as I put it into park I hear grinding gears. Could it be this, what's wrong with my truck.

    Thank you, my F150 Platinum won't switch, I'm going to take the motor off and try manually like you said, additionally I'll check the motor & power like you said. Any chance you have the proper resistance that the motor/sensors should be at?

      So far I've found one chart mentioning this test and all it says is it should read zero for short or infinity for open.

    now if you move the shaft pin on the transfer case back to 2 high will it stay there with out putting a motor back on it so you can drive the truck with out jumping out

    Well I got a question for people I got a 2003 F150 Larry ott super crew cab is got the electronic shift on the dashboard I have changed everything from the motor the transfer case module the 2 vacuum syllables I've checked for vacuum and everything else but on my silhouette I got power one side and a ground and now when I shift it I lose the ground on the 2 wheel and it goes to the 4 wheel drive to activate it but when I go to shift it back it does not transfer the ground back over to the 2 wheel drive so I can shift it back into full wheel drive If anybody can help me I would love to know what else maybe wrong

    What were the symptoms of this going bad? I have a 1997 f250 7 lug. Just had a new windshield installed which cause my gem to fry. Replaced the gem and fuse block and my 4x4 still doesn't work. I replaced the 4x4 switch on the dash because I had a new one in the box sitting in my shop still nothing. Checked all fuses and all are good. The 4x4 lights come on when the key is first turned but goes after after a few seconds. I go to shift it into 4x4 no lights no click no nothing still. The gem and fuse block installed are both brand new amd are.correct with matching part numbers on both. How ever the gem and fuse block did fix many other electrical issues I was really hoping it would fix the 4x4 as Well.

      the truck was stuck in 4 low mode. would not engage 2wd or 4wd unless manualy shifted lever with the motor unbolted. unbolt the motor and move the switch to see if the motor turns. see if you can turn the lever on the transercase if the motor unbolted.

      Did you figure out what was causing the 4x4 to not work ? I have the same issue on my 97 f150 I changed the gem bcz I lost windshield wipers windows 4x4 and new gem(matching numbers) fixed all that except 4x4 now doesnt work fuse is good switch is good it doesn't click and light on dash doesnt come on and now my truck doesnt move on drive or reverse pretty much stuck in neutral

    My dads Navigator just doesn’t change to A4WD, 4x4 hi or lo. Is that a reason to have a look at the transfer case?

      possibly, you first need to check the fuse for the 4wd system, once that is verified good. you need to check for power at the transfercase motor connect with a test light like shown in the video. if power is good, remove the transfercase motor and manually move the tranfercase like shown in the video. if the gear moves. the motor is most likely bad. good luck

    I was able to move the pin to the motor back into 2h but it's still stuck in 4L the actuator wont disengage from 4L can you help me out

      I heard one of the front tires takes the pressure of the 4x4 splines and will let it return to 2 wheel drive

      Sometimes you have to go reverse to disengage

    So where you say if I cant shift the metal shaft coming out of the tcase to the motor, then I have a tcase issue, when I try to turn it, it wants to, but it springs back to where it was when I took the motor out, any help would be nice, this is a main vehicle so I need to get this figured out soon, thanks

      I’ve never seen one spring back like that. What’s the year make and model? Try holding the lever in position while someone rocks the truck back and forth. It might be stuck in a postition due to vehicle in park

      Its a 98 explorer, should i try having the truck in N, then try to move the lever? Also, when I have someone moving the switch, should i see the motor move?

      Yes, you can unbolt the motor and move the switch. Obviously the position should move when the switch is turned. Have you scanned the 4wd module for codes? That would help

      I don't have a scanner that can do 4x4 code scans, but, when i did a scan about 2 weeks ago, it was saying alot of contact plate low circuit, 4x4 circuit low, etc, there was about 8 codes for the motor and 4x4, but when i try the switch, i dont see the motor move, but the dash lights up 4x4 hi and lo, but not flashing.

      Got the tcase shaft to turn freely, just had to shift the truck into N and then to P, I am just leaving It in 4AUTO, even though when I move the switch, I only have 4HI, but occasionally 4LO, Thanks for your help, now I got a main car back

    Hi i replaced the trans motor but i have no 4wd switch lights on switch or dash when i first start vehicle the dash light shows 4wd high then shuts off I replaced air tank and vacuum solenoids but still nothing fuses look ok but im confused Any help would be appreciated Thanks

      This sounds like it might be a bad indicator switch.

      hi thanks for ur reply, i did try a new switch but that wasnt it, im thinking its the gem module? the truck drains the battery also ive noticed and out of nowhere the rear cab light will come on by itself could it be gem module?

      It's a bit late but there is a company called behemoth drive trains that sells a manual conversion kit. On their original video they say it's only $450 but on their site it's like a v2 after prototyping that's going for about $850 because it's anodized and pretty looking now.

      Thats the problem I'm having. Check the fuse under the hood first. If its good, turn your key on and turn the knob to 4wd. Then reach in over your drivers side front wheel and try to turn the drive shaft. If it turns your transfer case motor is bad

    Typically you only have to pull the one pin from your old and insert into the new no cutting required..

      Also I would make sure case is in 2WD, then apply power to shift motor yellow n orange, and apply power n ground accordingly to get shift motor to move to correct position. marking where it should be is best, otherwise the truck will have issues indexing the position of the transfer case and may have other issues.. I have 20 hours into swapping GEM modules and testing trying to get this 80k abandoned 99 F150 back on the road, thinking my codes are due to me moving transfer case to match motor when should have been moving motor to match case, now codes for plate n motor that were not there before the swap...

      I determined that the transfer case motor was bad by testing the power and grounds in the circuit. Using a test light like shown in the video. If the test light lights up while selecting different range modoes you know power is getting to the motor
