- Storing Dahlia tubers the EASY WAY! Here's how to dig and store dahlia tubers. Digging and storing dahlia tubers can seem hard, but I've found that storing the tubers "dirty" in clumps is an easy method that has worked for me for many years. There is no one "right" way to store dahlia tubers, rather you just need to find the best storage for your particular situation. Here are the steps I use for storing dahlias dirty in clumps.
After the first frost wait 1-2 weeks before you start digging your dahlia tubers. This will allow their skins to toughen up and cure for storage. If there is any threat of a freeze dig the dahlias immediately
Label your dahlias using flagging tape and a waterproof marker
After 1-2 weeks of curing cut the plants back to 4 inches
Use a pitchfork to gently loosen the soil around the tubers being careful not to damage them. Lift the tubers and brush off excess soil.
Place the tubers upside down in open brown paper bags of bulb crates and allow them to dry in a cool dark place for a few days. Do not allow the tubers to freeze. ( I use our detached, unheated garage)
After drying place the tubers into brown paper bags, roll the tops of the bags down, and place the bags into cardboard boxes
Store in a location that is 40-50 degrees F and 70% humidity (I use our unheated basement)
Check the tubers at least once a month for any signs of mold, rot, sprouting, or shriveling, and make any necessary adjustments to their storage location and medium
I so appreciate how you get right to the point in your videos!!
I appreciate your short video on Dahlia storage. There are so many methods and I respect your knowledge and experience so this video is a keeper. Thank you.
So simple compared to other methods I've heard about! Thank you for this.
Omg, thank you! I needed this today!! I've been unsuccessful at storing dahlias for two years now and it's expensive to buy new tubers every year.
I have stored them in boxes with sawdust or vermiculite in the past, but now wrap them in a few layers of newspaper inside either plastic crates or cardboard boxes. I do not live in the US so we do not get paper bags unless we buy them specifically. It has worked well for me. I am in zone 9.
I have watched many “dahlia storing” videos and yours is BY FAR the best!! Great visual and verbal explanation. Thank you 😀🥰
You are an excellent teacher! Please keep up the awesome videos.
Very helpful and such an easy way to store dahlia tubers, thank you!
great video as are all your videos . always to the point , modest , easy to understand, as a floral design student and avid gardener in a cold climate
find your videos particularly intresting .thank you so much
Great video. Short, sweet and informative. Also easy for all gardeners, especially new ones.
I’ve been storing mine like this for years. No fuss. Most survive🙂
Thank you so much, I just dug them up and they are sitting in the garage. Now I know what to do next!!! I love you and your channel!!!
Ooh good - mine will have to be dug, so this will be one for future reference. In Australia, mine are just getting growing now..
So just in an empty paper bag and then in a box? No substrate of any kind?
I can't wait for Dahlia season again. Thanks for a great video.
Perfect Danielle thank you! Just curious what are your top 3-5 varieties?
I'm not her but I love Cafe au Lait, Thomas Edison, and Crazy Love.
Yes it Was helpful! I lived in 7a in Long Island and they didn’t last so now that I’m up in Cape Cod, I’ll be more prepared to store them.
Thank you for the reminder! I need to add some moisture to my tubers already.
Haven't grown dahlias before. I've started ordering tubers for spring planting, and am trying to look at videos about them in advance.
As a first time flower grower, your videos always give me the confidence to proceed. This is my first time with Dahlias and it is time to dig. Everyone talks about storing in shavings, vermiculite and other mediums. I wanted something that was easier without requiring me to go out and buy things. Perfect!
Going to try the paper bag method this year! 💐
Thank you !! Very straight to the point and informative!
Your methodology is by far the simplest instructions yet. I also appreciate your clear communication ! Thank you very much!
There's no way that I would store my dahlia tubers in the rainy old Seattle weather, We are zone 8 and it rains here 9 months out of the year😂. I'm glad for this video to help me get ready for this task coming up in not too long
I'm in Seattle too,so it's not worth storing?
@@philipsiderakis6332 You absolutely have to dig them up in our environment. Guaranteed that they will rot if you leave them in the ground
@@philipsiderakis6332It’s risky.I am in Seattle and I never dig mine up (in ground or pots). I cover the ground surface with plastic from Thanksgiving until spring. Most years it works. Some years, some rot (unfortunately usually my favorites). I may just be lucky!
@@timesawasting7532how about pots? Do you know if it would be ok to cover with leaves and leave them in pot?
@@nimageofmineI’ve left them in pots with a few leaves over winter but I cover the entire pot with plastic to attempt to avoid rot. The problem with this method is that even if the dahlias survive they will still need to be divided every other year or they will die.
Thank you this is terrific as usual from YOU ❤️
My only storage area is a heated basement. I divide them in the fall because of limited space. This year I put some in Vermiculite and some in plastic wrap to see which works better. I store them in crates against a north concrete wall. I open them up monthly and have to spritz them with water because of the higher temperature in the storage area. This worked for me last year. I planted over 80 dahlias this year and only lost 3 to disease. I have so many tubers. If they make it, are you interested in some? Also when I divided I found some worms and centipedes. Do you have any issues with bugs if you leave the soil around the clumps?
If you have any you’d like to give away still I’d love some!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Great video Danielle. Thank you for sharing this. I grew dahlias for the first time this year and I think I killed them when I dug them up. I’m not sure what happened but they got soft and mushy. I waited for the first freeze and gave them another week but they still got soft. Anyways, I’m going to try following your method next year. Thanks! p.s. Can you share what pruner you used in the video?
Super helpful. Thank you!
This was super helpful thank you!
Thank you very much for this video. I have problems with storing dahlias since in my basement is too hot and in the shed too cold. I wonder if you use vermiculite or sand in the paper bags or nothing at all?
I used Vermiculite last year and found many shriveled tubers. I guess now I know to wet the Vermiculite a little over winter.
Great video! What a happy young lady that obviously enjoys sharing her knowledge. Thank you!
This explanation was so helpful. A no fuss method and concise. Thank you
I will have to try this. I have not much success in storing them.
Very informative 🙏
Hi Danielle! I know that you mentioned using a storing medium like sand to store the tubers... but then I didnt see you add any to the paper bags during that last step. Do you use sand or anything in the paper bag to store??
That was for divided bulbs. In the video she does undivided clumps.
Can you leave your canna, dahlia, and elephant ears (tubers & corms) in an unheated garage over the winter? I put mine in a cardboard box. I am wondering if I should put them in my basement or the steps of the bilco door to my basement. What's your recommendation?
What do you mean by curing? I have heard the term in different videos and websites, but no one explains this term, how it works, or how long before you know it's "cured"
Thanks for a succinct, pleasant tutorial. Your dahlias are beautiful, as are you. P.S. I've been reading some of your father's books to my 4 yr. old grandson. (The Christmas one is next.) Happy Thanksgiving!
Very nice ❤️
Do you cut any roots or long tails off the tubers?
I want to have a cut flower garden, but I am concerned that I might end up with more weeds than flowers. I feel my age is against me. This past summer I used Preen on all flower beds except 2. I want black eyed Susan’s, Sweet Williams and columbine to reseed in those 2 beds. I am kept busy trying to keep the weeds out of my large vegetable garden. Is there a way to control the weeds between rows of flowers. Your suggestions will be much appreciated.
Do you add peat moss to your Dahlia tubers to preserve them.
very nice
I am trying dahlias for the first time this year. I’m in 6b. I have 8 or 9 plants of 3 varieties. One of the plants has bloomed so far. They are all only about 1 1/2 feet tall. Should they be a lot bigger by now? I started them indoors as soon as I received them. They are all planted in the same location.
Well done to the point! You’ve stored dahlias before! Thanks for your info!
KEEP DOING GOOD...
Thank you for this! I’ve been following you since Feb and absolutely love everything you share. You are my top go to info on plants!
Because I pulled mine out and found gall 😢 I washed all my others too be sure I didn’t have other infected ones. I did actually have some so Im glad I washed them but I think next year I’ll leave them in clumps and with dirt. Im going to try the Saran Wrap method this year but im nervous. Here’s to hoping it works well.
One question, how deep is your dahlia bed and what mixture did you fill it with?
Thanks for all this knowledge you share!
Thanks!
My basement is heated but I do have a cold room, would this work or would my attached garage be better?
Hi! Whichever area stays between 40-50 degrees F with 70% humidity will be best! Any warmer than 50 is too warm. 42 is ideal. And anything that dips below freezing will turn the tubers to mush when they thaw.
@@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens Great , thank you Danielle for your detailed info, every UA-cam video on storing Daliahs I've seen just states to store in a cool place, which really is not helpful because here in Canada our idea of cool is a lot different from someone in southern USA cool LoL. Luv your show and can't wait to see your dried Xmas tree this year.
Do i need to store them in sand or earth?
❤❤❤
Zone what?
Great video! Please don't use single use plastic wrap, it's a terrible waste when a brown paper bag with saw dust works just as well
I am Zone 7b
Just dug them up last week and while in the process of washing them off in the kitchen I discovered I brought a big old wolf spider inside with me lol 🕷
