The Kidd destroyer is one of the most exciting ships in the US Navy, if only because the crew chose a 17th century Scottish pirate William Kidd as their mascot, and raised a pirate flag. Fletcher class destroyers, which included Kidd, were notable for their endurance, but this ship has survived even after successful kamikaze attack.
Naval Legends is a series about the construction, service, and daring deeds of legendary 20th-century ships.

My brother serves on the current USS Kidd. It’s really interesting to hear about the proud history of the original.
In honor he serves.
She still flies the Jolly Rogers and recently returned to San Diego flying a huge 🏴☠️
stevemc 01 my brother is the definition of some who has a code of honor lol. He’s an amazing man, it’s awesome seeing him live out his dream.
@@luciusvorenus9445 She ran anti piracy ops off Somalia awhile back. Imagine thinking you're the pirate and then 10,000 ton warship pulling 30 knots flying a giant Jolly Roger comes to hunt you down?
Can't believe the dude butchered the names of the anti aircraft weapons lol.

I was just gonna post that...
My grandfather, Lieutenant James Edward Gilboy, was the damage control officer during the kamikaze attack. I'm grateful his vessel was saved and made into a museum.
Wow
Thanks for sharing. I am grateful for his service.
😊😊😊
Grew up and still live in Louisiana. Made many trips to her as a child. One of the very very VERY few ships I actually like.
This ship is my #1 priority in WoWS, with #2 being New Orleans.
They've both got huge sentimental value to me.
My last name is Fletcher. I grew up in New Orleans (moved to Baton Rouge after Katrina), and I had two relatives who served on a Fletcher and a New Orleans.
Planning to volunteer at the Kidd as well.
omg i live so close to you
I'm from the Crescent City, too!
My grandfather served in the Kidd. He’s got a lot do cool stories about his time in the navy.
I too share a name of a Fletcher Class destroyer and would love to visit the U.S.S. Kidd someday.
I visited the Kidd once. That was 2 years ago though
My grandfater was on this ship during WWII.
Did You know that USS Kidd DD-661 is one of only four surviving Fletcher class destroyers in existence ? She is in Baton Rouge as a museum.
(I had seen Cassin Young DD-793 in Boston)
I did indeed... I have pictures of it from his reunion. I have driven past it a bunch when I worked at MUSA, never could stop though.
When I saw the Cassin Young, I was a little surprised to find it equipped with AN/SPS-10 and AN/SPA-25 RADAR set. This was a basic set that I had trained on when in "A" school 1986. I assume Kidd has the same.
+cyanide99ghs mine too
Who's here after watching Greyhound? This was the ship used in the movie.
Holy crap that movie is over a year old now?!!!
Here after watching Shane, curator of the USS Sullivans video about the KIDD's anniversary. Own interest is because my only maternal uncle was killed on the USS Johnston while firing at the Japanese Navy at Samar. Also a shout out to HistoryX who alerted me to the continued existence of the Fletchers. Such proud little ships that fought like hell.
Yeah
I live near Baton Rouge (where it's stationed), so I realized WoW had it and now I'm here.
My dad was aboard the Kidd when she was hit by the Jap plane. He was wounded and lived. Edward Rynes (may have been K/A Ryno). I'd love to see any and all photos that anyone has that were taken aboard ship 1943, 44, & 45 in the hopes of spotting my dad.Thank you to all our countries servicemen & women. God bless.
Ya'll should have covered the USS Johnston (DD-557). Now THAT is a legendary ship. Gave the Yamato the middle finger, and was sailed by men who's balls were of similar material and tonnage as the ship they sailed on. See Battle off Samar for reference.
USS Laffey!
Gorgotrove or uss samuel b roberts she gave the offical FUCK YOU JAPAN to every ship and soldier
she went down after doing more than anyone could have expected
biscuitninja the laffey should be reclassified as a battleship
+60103 flying scotsman We need the Sammy B in the game already!
9:45 OMG why can't documentaries have CGI this good?!
1 word: FUNDING. This was a pretty sweet video :)
Thomas s Yeah. They still managed to fuck up that intro though.
@@thomass647 There is a second and third factor; expertise, and assets while most documentaries may have a few 3D artists, that work on a few projects here and there, Wargaming has an experienced team whom has spent years hard at work, building stages, modelling and animating vehicles, and better learning how to take advantage of their inhouse game engine, which works just fine for films, and as all the assets have already been made for their games, producing these high quality CGI films is relatively easy for them as they have already done most of the work in the production of their games.
@@thomass647 it's not about funding. It's about skills. Even some UA-cam animator can create a full length animation alone. Better than Hollywood animation that made with hundreds of animators.
Edit: even anime is better than Western cartoon. Shingeki no Kyojin for example. SnK is even better than all Western series n movies. Except Game of Thrones
Dude watch greyhounde this ship was used to the film. Look the CGI and reply to me.
My Dad was a Tin-Can sailor on Fletcher Class. Tin-Can Sailor are a breed apart best personified by LCDR Evans and the crew of DD-557 USS JOHNSTON.
My grandfather served on this ship.
Bless him m8
Mine did as well! Was one of the men injured during the kamikazie attack. One day ill get to see the Kidd
GunFuMaster o7
+GunFuMastert ell him thank you for his service
+GunFuMaster mine too
The USS Kidd is actually pretty cool, I actually got to spend the night on it.
ORP Błyskawica is better.
I did too, the bunks aren't as comfortable as you might think huh xD
yepp
Xbrain 360 I aswell. through boy scouts
me too
For those asking a feature on USS Enterprise (CV-6), Battle 360 is a whole series dedicated to the ship.
Visited the USS Kidd in Baton Rouge a few weeks ago on vacation. Very much worth the time to visit. The people at the museum are great too. Very friendly and helpful. Check out the museum and especially the models upstairs. You will not be disapointed!
The picture of the Kamikaze is fucking scary!
Toured this fine ship several times. I live in New Orleans and served in the Navy. First and last ships were Destroyers. Gotta love the tin can!
I live about 2 miles from this memorial museum, here in Baton Rouge. I was also stationed aboard the USS Sarsfield DD-837 in 1976 as my first duty station. Sarsfied is a Gearing class destroyer, laid down in January, 1945. When I visit the Kidd Museum it’s like being back in the fleet as the two destroyers are virtually identical.
My grandfather use to take me on this ship on weekends back in the mid 80's.
Remember kids, this is the only breed of ship that scared the shit out of the mighty Yamato during the battle off Samar. That history proves that "Size of the dog matters not in a fight, it is the size of a fight in a dog".
"This is going to be a fighting ship anyone who wants may transfer off now." Captain Evans first words to his crew..he meant EVERY word. No idea how many, if any, men requested transfer.
It's aboard the USS Kidd would they film parts of the scenes of the upcoming movie Greyhound
An update ... USS Kidd served as a prop for the Tom Hanks movie "Greyhound".
I like the British narrator better, feels more authentic.
Ships like that in the US BRITISH NAVY deserve to be still serving like the vanguard kg5 Nelson rodney plus the US battle ships I now some are preserved but that is good but better to be serving I think.
Have to agree, it's an absolute travesty that none of the great British battleships were preserved, nice to still have the Belfast though.
Somebody needs to tell the narrator that Mk is the abbreviation for and pronounced Mark.
He also said "nmi" instead of saying nautical miles and "shp" instead of shaft horse power i like the other narrorators but still good
Also, its pronounced Bow-fours, not Bah-fers and Oar-like-on not Air-le-corn. Very much dislike this narrator
JKSSubstandard yeah that killed me
Just wanted to add that all the WOT community pronounces cupola as cup-ola when it’s “kyoo-pola”
its not a real human...
its AI...
I love about 15 minutes away from this remarkable ship!
Live*
I visited The USS KIDD when I was 13 . Amazing, it made me realize what it was like for my grandfather as a chief radiomans mate on the USS DICKINSON DD157 AND USS HERBERT DD160..
binge watching naval legends because they're the best documentaries on youtube :)
It looks just like the USS Johnston DD-557 the one destroyer that charged into a massive fleet of Japanese warships in order to protect America and the captain Ernest Edwin Evans the first Native American to earn the Medal of Honor but however unfortunately the USS Johnston sunk due to heavy fire. But the USS Johnston is now become the world’s deepest shipwreck and also make a video about the USS Johnston DD-577 Fletcher-class Destroyer you know this ship is a legend who fought to protect America.
Greyhound got me here
Next US destroyer they should do is USS Laffey, "The ship that would not die." Class Allen M. Sumner. The ship took 4 bombs six kamikaze strikes and a strafing run.
@2:52 Can’t spell Oerlikon? Lmao sounds like “Ear-Le-Corn”
I am BM2(SW)SAR rescue swimmer 80-84 on DDG-993 Kidd commissioned june 1981, I had the privilege of being a plank owner and I met with the surviving original crew of DD-661 in Little Rock for Navy Ball reunion at the Hilton when Clinton was Governor, Amazing time. I had a good time on the Kidd, I got to ride torpedoes when recovering them (never could get used to shark encounters), did main deck unreps , conreps, vertreps and HIFR's visited some awesome places and spent 9 months in Beruit Lebanon with the Peace Keeping Force Expedition. Captain Flanagan was first Captain then Captain Fred Moosally relieved him. God Bless All the crew of the Kidd.
LB
What I like about destroyers is they multi-functionality but when the enemy is nearby, they are the first into the fray and usually get hit first. Because they have to defend the transports and carriers even if they have to sacrifice themselves.
Like during the Battle off Samar, part of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Philippines.
The "Pirate flag" is called the "Jolly Roger" and the USS Kidd is the only American Naval ship allowed to fly it. My Dad served on a Fletcher that was Kamikazed at Okinawa.
The "Jolly Roger" used to flown at times when we returned to port from times at sea, '72-'73 time frame aboard my first sea duty aboard an AO.
It was also common for British submarines to fly the Jolly Roger in WWII. Apparently the British naval high brass initially dismissed submarines as a dishonorable way to fight a war in WWI so the crews flew the pirate flag.
6:30 When you swallow the wrong way.
My dad was on this ship when the kamikaze hit at Okinawa in 1945. He was born in 1926, and barely got service. He is mentioned in the ships log for missing muster one day, lol. The entry for the day the kamikaze hit, April 11, was ominous with the listings of the dead and injured. Thankfully my father's name was not listed there. The next day, April 12, FDR died of a heart attack. So I can only imagine the morale on the ship as they withdrew from battle with dead and wounded on board, under continuing attack, compounded by the death of the President. Oh well, no shortage of trials on both sides in any war.
I toured the U.S.S. Kidd April 16, 2019. It was an incredible sobering, educational experience! Wow!
My grandfather served aboard the USS Ingersoll DD-652, another fletcher class ship.
will you guys ever make a video of USS Enterprise
The Darkness Network I do believe that they have a video on the USS Enterprise out now.
Should take about 2 hrs. on that ship. No ship came close to seeing the action in WWII than the "Big E".
Wait...the chieftain is here??
Surely you Kidd?
One USS Kidd not mentioned is USS Kidd DDG-993 originally ordered by the Shah of Iran, he was overthrown the ships (there was four of them) couldn't be delivered so they went into service as the Kidd class (sailors humor called them the "Ayotolla Class".
The Kidd-Class DDGs that you refer to were especially formidable in weaponry, capabilities, and accommodations. I was glad the U.S. kept them, but sad to see them ultimately retired - far too soon in my opinion.
That class of destroyers was also nicknamed the "Dead Admirals Class" as each of their namesakes - Kidd, Chandler, Scott, and Callahan - were killed in action.
I agree, they were all decommissioned far too early. Fortunately, Kidd and her sister ships were purchased by Taiwan and have been proudly serving in their navy.
USS Kidd has since had her name assigned to another destroyer, DDG-100. Kidd's name lives on honorably.
Toxic people destroys players using USS KIDD: *GET OUT OF HERE KID*
There were other "Kidd class" destroyers that some may not realize:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kidd-class_destroyer
Oh, and the "narrator needs to stop using metric measurements when talking about American vessels.
I went to this ship on a school field trip. It's in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
How was the experience?
Here after watching Greyhound
The best generation they're almost all gone now.. now we have men that don't know what bathroom to use.
Aye
/o/ The Chieftain! :D
Garrett Lynch at 4:11, wasnt he in the 2012 movie Battleship? Where he says to Rhianna "ready to play with the big boys" referring to the Missouri 16" guns.
You're referencing a US ship presumably to US viewers so what's with all the metric sh*t?? And, say what things are; shaft horse power, not "shp," nautical miles, not "nm," and the 20mm are pronounced Orli-kahn', not Orlycorn. Otherwise, it was a pretty good video. I certainly agree with the earlier commenter about doing a similar video on the USS Johnston and the USS Samuel B. Roberts, both badass destroyers.
@Ewok from Endor a.k.a _SilverArrow_xxx who gives a damn about what the other 99% of the world uses? Here in the United States metrics are NOT used so when an American ship is being referenced or described USE AMERICAN TERMINOLOGY
I hope world of warships could feature the USS JOHNSTON (DD-557). The most heroic act of USS Johnston, Lt.Commander Evans and the ships crew in the battle of Surigao strait. The most heroic and crucial battle of the invasion of Leyte.
it was the Battle off Samar
@@robertyoung3992 oh yes Thanks for correctimg that
USS KIDD looked like USS FLETCHER in greyhound
The only mistake they made with their visual model giving specification's is that they are using a round bridge Fletcher, The USS KIDD was a Square bridge fletcher... which they show later.
i spent the night there in boy scouts and it was fun
Same
Named after Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who was killed in the Pearl Harbor attack when the "Arizona" battleship blew up while he was on the bridge: only his ring was found after the massive fireball wiped-out 1100 sailors.

Thank you for releasing this. I love hearing about the great ships that served with distinction. However, please talk to someone about pronunciation. Your narrator is good, but the script needed changes. i.e. "MK.12" is "Mark 12", 155 mm guns are 5" radar guided and assisted guns, etc.
Ahh the good old days when this game was good. Now all the loyal skilled players have left in disgust, leaving behind only the wallet warriors and BB buying NOOBS.
I visited the USS KIdd twice while stationed at Baton Rouge. On a side note .. there is a museum next to the Kidd full of fantastic ship models .. most built by sailors and donated
I like his T Rex hand
Wonder what happened to it though...
Spent the night on the kidd back on a youth trip. Was a very interesting night.
Th3DarkRavin I just subbed 2 u
but why in-game Kidd just have 1x5 torpedos
You give up a torp launcher in exchange for the repair party. If Kidd had repair AND two launchers, Benson would be outclassed.
It's my understanding that they removed one to add more anti-air mounts.
Nerfs.
The real life Kidd only has 1 set of launchers. I mount was removed so they could add extra AA guns
@@danielsmith6782...she had the second quintuple mount remounted some years back: she isn in her 1945 configuration.
Who else is here after watching Greyhound
Please do one on the USS Laffey!
My grandfather was on this ship and the u.s.s. Black. He survived the kamikaze attack because his shift on the gun had just ended. As he closed the hatch to go below they were hit. The man who relieved him died instantly, his eyes were bulging out. Even though he could’ve gone home, he went to another ship. He died 3 yrs ago. The democrats will never understand what men did for them
No...that would be trump...suckers and losers he called them. On a visit to Pearl Harbor he had NO IDEA what the Arizona memorial was all about.
It is a great museum ship to visit and worth the price of admission. Some parts on the ship are from the USS Tolman (DM-28), on which my grandfather served as a EM during the war.
I. Hate. That. Intro. Voice. So. Much.
I have slept a couple of nights on that ship pretty cool to say.
They would wake us up with the battle stations alarms
That's epic. Was is for boy scouts or something?
@@calvincanada4723 yea I was in Boy Scouts
I love USS KIDD 661
The Fletcher class is a very beautiful lady.
Great design. Lovely lines.
Why is the narrator quoting metric values on an American destroyer?
You guys should do a video on the USS Laffey another fletcher
+Hrisin C None of the ships named 'Laffey' were Fletcher class, one was a Benson class and sunk at Guadalcanal. The other, an Allen M. Sumner class destroyer which is currently a museum.
***** Nope, Taffy 3 was at the Samar strait in the Leyte Gulf. USS Laffey's baptism of fire was in April 1945 30mi North of Okinawa.
***** Yea. sorry, a bit rusty on my knowledge.
Laffey was stuck by a Czech-made shell fired from German shore batteries while supporting Overlord. Read The Ship That Would Not Die. It was written by her skipper that commander he trough the war. He also skippered the earlier Laffey that was sunk during the Solomon's campaign.
If you’re born on the 4th of July, you’re an Independence Kidd
i worked on this ship in college
i heard theres gonna be a new movie featuring Kidd
I have been there. It's amazing!
We need Bismarck, Tirpitz, all of the South Dakota class, all of the North Carolina class, Enterprise CV6 hms hood, fuso class
Fletchers baddest ships in the war
Greyhound
I know the greyhound move thet 5 or 4 u-boat thet the u boats about to hit uss kid and it dogges the torpedo and have a kill 4 u boats the airplane with bomb and it kill it cus the convoy of a ship headed to brithin cus hey need man and guns or not
You guys should do one about the uss Enterprise
Leave it to a video game to do better Naval History videos than the History Channel these days.
Grey hound ❤️❤️
Born and raised in Louisiana and super proud to have the Kidd represent our state
My wife’s family name is Kidd. They traced heritage to Captain William Kidd and back further. My wife is one of his direct decedents.
I have a story I wonder if anyone can confirm. It was told me by an old U.S. sailor, Three U.S. destroyers broke through the fog in the midst of 4 IJN cruisers. The destroyers were single file, the cruisers were two by two. The lead cruiser flashed a challenge at the lead destroyer, the Yank captain had his signals officer flash the challenge to the adjacent cruiser who responded and the yanks flashed the answer back to the lead cruiser, the Yanks sailed between the cruisers and back into the fog before the Japanese realized what was up. True?
Very cool. My Grandfather served on the USS Kidd in Korea. But why is the USS Kidd rep rolling jarhead cammies? POD: Blues. Or Whites, in a month or so. But really. Cammies don't hide you when you are haze gray and underway.
where is the big railgun? I got scammed frfr 💀
(jk)
Wargaming should spam premium Flecther, Cleveland and Baltimore classes like a motherfucker. So many great ships with impressive service history.
And not to forget USS Washington BB-56 as well.
I’ve been on that and even got to sleep on it when I was in Boy Scouts!
i live only less than 30-20 miles from baton rouge and the river center
I served on the Kidd from 1961 to 1963. I left service in 1963 in Philadelphia and was on the last crew that actually saw active service on the kidd.
Greyhound
Been to the Iowa, Alabama, Patriots pointe etc, the Kidd is my favorite. It hasn't been too commerciallized
She is in the condition as she was in 1945.
My grandmother served on this ship
One of the best ships with one of the most interesting commanders with one of the most misleading missions for her (some King of the Sea crate instead of Kidd herself; screw marketing team).
What I would give to see the old era Royal Navy of 1700 & 1800 faces when this thing attack them
I’ve been on this ship before
well, while we wait, we can look at Dreadnought.
I was on the wedderburn DD684 which was In the same division as the Kidd along with the Hopewell and the Uhlmann.l have been on the Kidd. My first meal was on the Hopewell in San Diego while waiting for my ship to come in . We had chili ! 1954. Some things you just don't forget.
Why the metric units ? Ugh
My grandfather served on this ship on WWII. He got transferred to another ship before the kamikaze attack though.
