I’m not a very religious person but the ending to LOST, for me, was absolute perfection. Christian comforting Jack as he’s sobbing is one of my favorite LOST moments, I can’t keep it together no matter how many times I watch it. This will always be my most loved series.
It comforts me that they all moved on together…

You don't have to be religious to imagine some form of afterlife. The show creators made obvious refrences to Christianity (more than most religions). They also regretted the in-your-face stained glass window.
The church was nothing more than a place they created to meet, and the ending would've also worked without any of it.
I did absolutely love the ending though.

I myself (and possibly you too) am at a constant battle of wanting to believe in something higher (man of faith) while I am unable to reconcile the logic of it (man of science)

One detail I think people miss is that Unlocke stabs Jack in the abdomen where his appendix was removed 2 seasons earlier. At the time it was weird his appendix suddenly needed removing, especially with the island's healing properties, but I see it as an intentional part of Jacob's grand design. Had his appendix not been removed, would Jack have survived as long as he did to restore the light? The show also makes a point of reminding us about this in Season 6 with Jack asking his mom when did he have his appendix removed, letting us know by bringing attention to it that this occurrence wasn't just a coincidence.

Fun fact - original plan was for the show to end in a huge volcano, but they didn't had the budget for that. In the end they decided to replace it with a hole in the ground.
There were couple references to it. Kids in Dharma had a class about the volcanic history of the island. We seen it on Rousseau's maps, also those black rocks gathered by Bernard to make the SOS sign.
edit: also the "unplug it and plug it back in again" with the vending machine could be a reference to the thing they had to do on the island - plug it off and on again

In the Season 3 episode “Catch-22’, Desmond’s flashback where he goes to talk to Ruth, he says that he was on the ground and a man with a rope tied around his waist helped him up and he knew he had to follow him. Ruth says it’s a good thing a bloody “shepherd” didn’t help you or you’d be off with the sheep.
That bit of dialogue kind of parallels the scene where Jack is lowered down into the light cave and finds Desmond.

  • @CharityDiary

I always saw Christian as talking to the audience. "To remember... and to let go." Because that was really the entire goal of this final season: to let the audience remember the time they've spent with all these fantastic characters, and to help them let go of them.

Yea so basically the flash sideways was a sort of purgatory that they all created so they could find eachother in the afterlife, like jacks dad said everything that happened was real, some people died before jack, jack died in the bamboo forest at the end, the rest of the people who escaped the island on the plane went on to live their full lives, again like jacks dad said when he was talking about people dying "some of them before you and some of them long after you", theres no "now" in this purgatory place, so no matter when people died, they're all here at the same time because time is irrelevant there

    • @juliet_burke
      @juliet_burke 2 роки тому +4

It was not purgatory. It was paradise fantasy life. The hint about it is a choice of last name for Penny - she is Milton in this season and Milton wrote "Paradise Lost". It's their paradise sideways after life to wait for each other.

I've watched "Lost" so many times I've lost track, and I tear up multiple times each time I watch the finale.

So it is clear everything that happened ( on the island over six seasons ) happened ( Jack, Charlie, Juliet, Sayid, Boone, Sun, Jin, Shannon, Bernard, Rose, Michael, Libby, Eko, and Ana Lucia dying, Locke being taken over by the Smoke Monster and becoming Flocke, Kate, Sawyer, Claire, Miles, Frank, and Richard / Walt escaping, and Hurley & Ben running the island a different way ) to our castaways.
The sideways meeting in limbo at the end didn't happen until Kate, Sawyer, Claire, Aaron, Desmond, Penny, Hurley, Rose, Bernard died ( of old age, illness, or an accident ) and were able to finally reconnect with Jack, Locke, Charlie, Juliet, Sun, Jin, Sayid, Boone, Shannon, and Libby's soul's 60/80 - 100+ years after their passing, our time.

    Neil... "Now you're like us."
You're one of the many LOSTies and part of this great community. I'm so happy to see you loved the ending and the show overall.
This show is, in my opinion, one of the most meaningful stories and journeys and it is quite simply life-changing as an experience and more importantly in terms of its central statement and message about life and its meaning etc.
I think everyone feels "lost" in one way or another at some points in their life, and this show makes a great, powerful declaration that in the end we are all found, we are all not alone, whether “we all live” or “we all die”, we are all more than simply “good” or “evil”, we are all a complex mixture of the two - some more purely one of the two than others - but still we are all somewhere on that scale and no matter where on it we are, we all can change and be redeemed, find love and/or forgiveness, we all can look beyond science and pure survival and see the power, importance and courage of simply having faith in the face of the impossible or the most tragic situations, we can all learn and realise that “what happens happens” and that it “happens for a reason”, we all can “let go” and find peace and we all can do it “together”.
I think the show is great in that these story morals and themes are all perfectly represented by each season and they all culminate so powerfully in this series finale.
S1: The story of our LOSTies starting their journey of redemption, forgiveness, letting go and learning to truly live “together”.
S2: The story of our LOSTies starting to learn the importance of having faith as well as science and survival.
S3: The story of our LOSTies starting to learn that there is no pure good or evil, the survivors were not all pure good nor the others all pure evil, they were all a complex mixture.
S4: The story of our LOSTies starting to learn that the home they were looking for was more than just the normal physical home. They/we are all in need of and looking for something even more meaningful which perhaps they/we already had/have in each other.
S5: The story of our LOSTies starting to learn that whatever happened happened, you can’t change the past and things perhaps truly do happen for a reason.
S6: The story of all stories culminating and our LOSTies all finally being able to learn to “let go” and “move on”.
This is not the end... "it only ends once and anything before that is just progress".
This is simply the start - you are a part of this global community and we all share this love for this show and this connection.
No matter how much life is challenging and we all feel lost at times - in addition to our family and friends in real life we have - we all have these characters, this show and we have this community with whom we've all shared this incredible meaningful journey.
Thank you for being a great reactor.
Take care, love and Namaste brotha x

It was an honor to accompany you on this journey. Now you are like us. I was thrilled to rewatch the finale and I really enjoyed seeing your emotions react, the way you felt the ending. I believe that everything important (and even small things) has been successfully answered. Who doesn't like this ending at this point, didn't really pay attention. Cheers from Brazil

I’m so sad it’s over. It’s really crazy how many of these moments in the finale are so emotional and still break me every time I watch it. It just goes to show that the series is truly about the characters and their connections to each other. And how the people in your life are what really matters. The impact you make on others and how they impact you is what makes you who you are. Just such a beautiful series.
I already think I’m gonna start watching your reactions from the beginning again.

Literally these were one of the only few things i looked forward to that made me happy in my otherwise hectic work life . Really going to miss these reactions , i look forward to you watching some show that i watched in future, but these Lost reactions will always be special for some reason , they just got me through some though times. You are one of the best Reactor and analyst Man .

So glad you enjoyed this finale. It’s so beautiful. Don’t think I’ve noticed, at least I don’t remember it since it’s been a while but how many “death” phrases take place throughout this episode such as rose telling Desmond to “move on”...”see you on the other side” even the classic “see you in another life brother” takes on new meaning to revealing the flash sideways. Glad you’re a Lostie now...best reactor this series I’ve ever seen. Don’t forget about the New Man in Charge epilogue! It’s just a little fun extra!

I was frustrated by the ending at first because Lost trained me to expect a last minute mind blowing twist but I had already figured out the flash sideways. After reflexion, it's a heart blowing satisfying ending, and it was the only appropriate way to close the story. It was ambitious on paper & they produced it with flying colors...Love it!

I think its the closest a lot of us get to watching it for the first time again. And so it ends! What a beautiful show and what a beautiful ending!
An observation about the ending: At about 19:03 - when Jack is dying on the Island and it keeps cutting back and forth between him on the Island and the flash sideways where everyone is gathering in the church, it looks like Jack on the Island is seeing into the afterlife and seeing the reunion in the church as he is dying, as if for him both events are happening simultaneously. Jack lays down and kind of smiles as he looks up at the sky. And everyone taking their seats in the church preparing to "move on" is like they are all taking their seats in an airplane as it's getting ready to take off. And then, on the island Jack sees the Ajira plane, with his friends inside, take off and "move on". It's as if Jack is seeing himself and his friends in the church move on. Just beautiful!
(We know that Juliet also saw into the Flash Sideways as she was dying (repeating "We should get coffee sometime." from the Flash Sideways as she lay dying in Sawyer's arms). I wonder if everyone who died saw into the Flash Sideways in their final moments?)
And it recently hit me that there's a whole metaphor/motif built into the show of flying by plane - like Life itself, It's a journey you take together with other people. You may start as strangers but the people you meet along the way can become the most important people in your life. As Christian says to Jack, "The most important part of your life was the time that you spent with these people...Nobody does it alone, Jack. You needed all of them and they needed all of you."

I’m so glad you have enjoyed this finale and Lost as a whole. The ending got such a negative reaction and most of that seemed to be down to confusion which is really disappointing but it has been brilliant watching along with you throughout.
Also, your uploading has been spot on. 2 episodes a week has given it the perfect amount of time to not rush through it all but also keeping people engaged. Looking forward to seeing what you dive into next!

    • @hansmahr8627
      @hansmahr8627 2 роки тому +1

I think people were disappointed because there had been such a build-up stretched out over years, so much theorizing, so many expectations. No finale could have ever lived up to people's imaginations. And this finale was certainly very different from what people back then expected. And that led to confusion and anger. It's also why there are so many people who really didn't understand the ending, you'll still hear people say that they were dead the whole time. Even though Christian explains it perfectly and even though the short epilogue makes it very clear that this is not the case.
When you look at people who watched the show for the first time after it aired, you'll see that most of them actually liked the ending. All of the reactors I've seen loved it (even the ones who struggled a bit with the last season), all of my friends that have watched it in recent years loved it. Because they weren't part of the original hype and that long build-up.
It's sad that most of the people who were disappointed never gave the show a second chance and rewatched it because the show and the finale in particular really grow on you when you watch it again. There aren't many shows with so much replay value. I've seen it countless times and I still discover new things.

@@hansmahr8627 yes I could totally see that as one of the reasons. I think I only watched the first 2 or 3 seasons on tv. After that it changed to a different channel in the UK so I wasn’t able to watch it. Started from the beginning again once it had all ended but I was a bit hesitant from the reaction and I had heard the exact same reactions as you “oh so they were dead all along. What a waste of time” etc. quite surprising so many people had that reaction given how they explain it with Christian

Neil….thanks so much for letting us go on this journey with you. It was almost like getting to watch it for the first time all over again. You are definitely a lostie! Now you’re like us 😁. I recommend watching the epilogue The New Man in Charge. It actually answers a few more of the less important questions from the show.
I think you got the whole point of the show (which many people didn’t). It was always about the characters and how they went from being broken to being “fixed”….and how they all needed each other to do that. The mysteries and the questions of the island were icing on the cake. So glad you enjoyed this.
Suggestion for your next watch: From. First season just finished on Epix. I think it’s coming to Netflix. Some of the same producers as Lost. Very similar type of story. I loved it.

@Neil - so glad you enjoyed The End and THANK YOU for sharing your journey with us. Much like Jack's journey (and many of our journeys also), you too truly became a Man of Faith at some point in S6, gave in to where the show was taking you, and was all the more rewarded for it.
As Jack said early in S1: "Last week most of us were strangers. But we're all here now. And God knows how long we're going to be here. But if we can't live together, we're going to die alone." Of all the themes that were repeated throughout the show, here was the one that literally tied it all up in The End. With each re-watch I'm more impacted by the beauty of this sentiment.
Lost is my favorite show of all time by a mile. Is it perfect? No. But extra points for level of difficulty and it no doubt sticks the landing with that final montage.
