Understanding Israel's Political Parties: From Bibi to Abbas
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 тра 2024
- On June 13th, Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid managed to form a government, but how did we get here? Politics are complicated, especially Israeli politics.
Why do Israelis keep having elections? What parties make up the Knesset - Israel’s parliament? A party needs at least 61 seats to form a government, but no single party has ever come close to winning that many seats, which means that parties have had to team up with one another to form a “Coalition Government.” Currently, getting those 61 seats has proved more of a challenge than ever, causing Israelis to go to the polls four times in three years. Will the Lapid-Bennett government last?
This video will help you make heads and tails of what you read in the news - the issues at hand, the various politicians, what “right” and “left” even means anymore, and how one man - Benjamin Netanyahu - managed to eclipse even the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Indeed. But keep in mind that there is intersectionality for each "tribe". For example, those who live in the periphery tend to be Mizrahi, localist, conservative and right wing. Those who live in the center (especially Tel Aviv tend to be Ashkenazi, globalist, progressive, atheist and left wing.
You forget about kibbutzim.
Many of them are periphery as well, but mostly Ashkenazi and left-wing.
@@Jewish_Israeli_Zionist Didn't notice this comment from a year ago, sorry.
Not 100% true. Many Ashkenazi live in the periphery, like how the guy mentioned in Kibbutzim, or former USSR immigrants who were placed in the periphery like Beer Sheva, and they also tend to be right wing.
On the other hand, today you have many Mizrachi living in central areas, like Kfar Saaba and Hertzelia, more than ever before due to rising in economical status.
The line is not clear cut today as it was before.
This party system is much more democratic, and much more representative than "winner takes all" in the US. This way you don't have to choose the better of 2 really bad options and can keep the elected officials accountable. Wish we had that.
Yeah well it sounds good in theory, but there are so many opinions and parties and here we are about to elect for the fifth time in 2 years (lost billions of dollars for all these elections)

Do you think Lapid will manage to form a government, will Netanyahu get another chance, or are we heading towards a fifth round of elections?
I assume that after the fall of Bennett (who joined Bibi), Gideon Sa'ar will join Bibi and together they will form a coalition
Whether it'll be now or after the next elections,
Yair Lapid will be the prime minister
On June 2, Lapid will call President Rivlin and tells him that he gave up on forming a government, which will make the mandate to form a govt go to the Knesset, triggering a 21 day period where any MK can get the mandate and form a govt if he/she can earn at least 61 MKs signatures. This is unlikely to ever happen, and when the 21 day period ends Israel will go to her fifth election in two years.
Bibi needs to go yesterday.
@@l.tc.5032 No , If Bibi goes , Israel will fall to it's enemies , That should never happen , and for ur info : I voted Likud ;) Bibi forever
This was entertaining and very informative. Israeli politics are a perennial mystery to outsiders. I am always amazed there is no written constitution.
There is a quasi constitution though, so it's something (but far from what it needs to be).
WOW, I'm Israeli and I've learned few things in this video. this is so accurate thanks!
Israel needs a constitution instead of a basic law system so term limits and rules against people under criminal indictment being PM can prevent the current mess that is the Israeli political system. It would also help in the seperation of religion from the government.
Hard agree.
Absolutely!
Israel technically have a constitution since the constitutional revolution in 1992
Sounds complex. Didnt get it
But the point is it is almost impossible to create a constitution. They have been trying since 1948 but they never succeeded. The main reason is the same reason why there are so many parties- Israeli society is very torn into groups. I can't think how will there be a consensus on the role of religion, the National Identity( because Arab parties and some left-wing want Israel to be bi-national) and many other topics. Throughput 73 years many people tried to come up with a constitution but it is almost impossible.
As an Israeli this is very accurate.
As Israeli you deserve much more views. Very accurate video
I agree. in the US, that will shut up (MAYBE) the labeling of Israel as Apartheid, racist, etc....
It’s sort of Game Of Thrones the real life version
Very good explanation for a country with very complex politics
You guys did a good job, but I think you should have mention that the Ultra-Orthodox Ashkenazi "United Torah" party is itself a 'joint' party or an alignment of two parties - the Hasidic "Agudat Yisrael" and the Mitnagdim ("Lithuanian") "Degel HaTorah".
What's the difference between Hasidic and Mitnagdim? - Maybe a subject for another video...?
Yeah, totally a topic for another video. Getting into "Agudas" vs "Degel" would have made it way too confusing, the same reason we really didn't get into the different parties in the Joint List, or Tziyonut Datit. Too much "inside baseball" for a 10 minute overview.

Whom Can We Trust If No One Is Trustworthy?
One of my favorite quips from Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is when Tom is defined as “a glittering hero…the pet of the old, the envy of the young,” and there were “some that believed that he would be President, yet, if he escaped hanging.” With these few words, Twain captured the essence of leadership in our world. Those who get to the top are the fiercest, most determined, and most ruthless. Today, the latter quality has become so intense that we can no longer believe our leaders, and certainly not trust them to have our best interest in mind.
I am not accusing any leader in particular, or even leaders as a whole. It is simply that in an egoistic world, where people vie to topple one another on their way to the top, the one at the top is clearly the one who trampled over and knocked down more people than anyone else. Concisely, to get to the top in an egoistic world you have to be the biggest egoist.
So how do we know whom to trust? We don’t know and we cannot know. All we know is that we are in the dark.
In a culture of unhinged selfishness, any conspiracy theory seems reasonable, while truth is nowhere to be found. When every person who says or writes something is trying to promote some hidden agenda, you have no way of knowing who is right, what really happened, or if anything happened at all.
The only way to get some clarity in the news and goodwill from our leaders is to say “Enough!” to our current system and build something entirely independent. The guiding principle of such a system should be “information only,” no commentary. Commentary means that information has already been skewed. Information means saying only what happened, as much as possible, not why, and not who is to blame and who we should praise.
Concurrently, we must begin a comprehensive process of self-teaching. We have to know not only what is happening, but why we skew and distort everything. In other words, we have to know about human nature and how it inherently presents matters according to its own subjective view, which caters to one’s own interest. To “clear” ourselves from that deformity, we must learn how to rise above our personal interest and develop an equally favorable attitude toward others. This is our only guarantee that our interpretation of things will be even and correct.
Once we achieve such an attitude, we will discover that the bad things we see in our world reflect our own, internal wickedness. Our ill-will toward others creates a world where ill-will governs, and so the world is filled with wickedness and cruelty. Therefore, all we need in order to create positive leadership-and to generally eliminate ill-will from the world-is to generate goodwill within us. When we nurture goodwill toward others, we will fill the world with goodwill. As a result, the world will fill with kindness and compassion. By changing ourselves, we will create a world that is opposite from the world we have created through our desires to govern, patronize, and often destroy other people.
Thank you for this video, very enlightening indeed. God bless Israel.

I think the problem here is you have not acknowledged Left and Right on economic and social or cultural issues. You can be Left Wing on social or cultural issues but Right Wing on economic issues, vice versa.
We mention it briefly towards the end there, it's just that even that doesn't always match (for example Shas that is very "left wing" on economic issues, "right wing" on social issues, but then kinda falls somewhere in the middle in terms of "the conflict" - but is still lumped into "the right" by most media outlets).
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong
People think the politics in Israel is flawed, because however the amount of votes per party determine the seats of the represented party. So the parties with the most votes, can make deals with the other party’s to help them win, and since you can mix and match official roles, the winning elected can then appoint the losing parties to roles, or help influence there vote, in exchange for them throwing in the towel and helping the majority party?
Kind of.
But a party has to get at least 4 seats in order to enter the parliament. Otherwise it will "eliminated" and it's voted will be distributed evenly between all the other parties.
Therefore our parliament isn't entirely accurate as a representation of "what Israelis thing", since in general "right-wing" voters tend to vote mostly to major parties who will surely pass this block of "4 seats", while many of Israeli "left-wing" voters vote for small parties, which fail to get those "4 seats", therefore the voices of these voters are "lost". In a sense.
Wow, ever hear of the saying that "to many cooks spoil the stew"..
This is so confusing. At the end of the day. The real debate shouldn't be proportional representation vs first past the post, but representative vs direct democracy. With some form of direct democracy, everyone has the opportunity to have their say. Weak political parties and politicians that can be vetoed via referendum will be a possibility. This way which type of representative democracy to choose becomes less relevant.
Wow, as an Israeli I could say you are spot on.
Do you think the talk rebbe had with bibi has made him into the man he his today?
The idea of thinking that Israeli politics can be explained in a 10-minute video is a fool's dream.
Seems like we managed to a pretty decent job, wouldn't you say?
Precise
120 is very little seats in a country of 9 million people, Finland has 200 seats in the parlament and we have 5 million people
120 is the number that Israel had in 1948 (with just under 1 million) and has historical significance since it's the number of the members of the Great Assembly, or in Hebrew the "Knesset Hagdola", which also lends it's name to the Israeli parliament.
In addition, remember that the Israeli parliament doesn't give out seats based off of districts, and is a single national voting area.
I’m Israeli and this man has been prime minister ever since I was 10. I’m 22 now. I cannot see his face anymore. We need someone new asappppp
