  • Guitar: 2016 Baroque Guitar by Jack Sanders
Here's our good friend Jack Sanders showing off a Stradivarius-inspired baroque guitar that he built this year and telling us a bit about the instrument. Jack plays Gaspar Sanz' Españoletas and Folias. Recorded at the Guitar Salon International showroom in Santa Monica, CA.
Huge thanks to the folks at Apogee Electronics (ApogeeDigital.com) for the use of their Ensemble interface in these recordings.

I certainly enjoyed the performance and the information, strings, tuning, etc about the instrument. Would love to see more baroque guitars on GSI.

Great sound and resonance for a replica of the Stradivari guitars - presume that it’s based on the specimen in the Ashmolean collection? What scale length did you make it? Most copies are scaled down from the original 740mm to 665 or sometimes 670mm.

It is indeed a great performance, the only thing I can not understand, is from which planet do you order your aquila strings? I had mine on my romantic guitar, and it only lasted about 2-3 months(o only didn't change them because I could not find them anywhere except for the internet).

The unwound Aquila nylgut strings do last a very long time and this instrument is strung entirely with unwound strings. I have found that Aquila wound strings don't last very long at all, the windings seem very soft and I chew through them very quickly - sometimes in a couple of weeks

excelente informacion, sobre la afinacion francesa,
mi pregunta es: veo que sobra una clavija, ¿es con propositos esteticos? por que conte nueve cuerdas y diez clavijas.

You see the same thing with a lot of lutes where the highest course (also called the "chanterelle") is a single string - there are probably many reasons for it. Some that occur to me:
*Historically, making a matched pair of strings with such a small diameter would be challenging to do by hand. Using a single string would avoid the time/expense of this challenge, and avoid any tuning issues introduced by the strings being different sizes.
*If the melodic line is often played on the high string, it would be easier to achieve a clear sound with a single string (you could use rest-stroke as well, which might improve volume?).

Good playing, the new strings might explain how noisy this instrument is.

The audio recording is too 'hot' i.e. too much clipping and popping over too little volume.
