  • This is part one of the howto about how to make your linux desktop feel like a modern recreation of the Amiga and be able to integrate Amiga software into it. In this part I show how to integrate the software using fs-uae and shared folders. I used Protracker as the chosen program. In part two I will look into the look and feel of it all.
    This is a response to all the comments on the show and tell video of my Linux desktop: • Experiencing that Amig...

    Protracker, lha and installer from aminet: aminet.net/

    If you are unsure where to get workbench install disks and kickstart the easiest way is to get it from www.amigaforever.com/ AmigaOS 3.1 behaves and looks exactly like 3.1.4 which I used in this video.

    Cooll. Amikit does the inversion by running the Linux soft from AmigaOS😊

    • @proteque
      @proteque  Рік тому

      I did try Amikit a very long time ago on my real Amiga. It was a great setup, which I really enjoyed using.
      The newer versions of Amikit is a bit to integrated with Windows during installation (or through "emulation with playonlinux on Linux) for me as I don't use Windows, which sort of has kept me from trying it out the later years.
      I'd wish they made a more Amigafocused installation prosess as it is imho an "AmigaOS distro". Maybe as an "install this on top of AmigaOS 3.9/AROS/ScalOS" (not sure what they are using as a base now?) or something like that? But it does indeed looks like a great setup from what I have seen in youtube videos others have made.

    Hello. I just wanted to give you an idea that is easier to implement and a bit snappier. You can use just 1 hdf and put all your apps there. Open protracker, make a save state. Creaet a launcher, give it the info to load the hdf and savestate, then you dont have to wait for the system to boot or much about with startup sequence.

    • @proteque
      @proteque  Рік тому

      This is a great tip and one I was considering. But one of my worries and one I never tested, was if the save state also saved the state of the filesystem. If that is the case that would reset files in the shared directories between AmigaOS and Linux. Have you tested this yourself? If not I may do a test and write the result here.

    • @Tweaker420666

      @@proteque I havr not tested it yet either, would love to know if it would work. Let's see which one of us comes up with an answer first :) will write back here if I have a conclusion first.

    Did not know FS-UAE could do this. I had terrible emulation performance when I last tried it, though. Like stuttering sound and laggy video in Turrican II for example, and no enough settings in the UI for even trying to fix it. But this was three years, ago, maybe I will try again ..
    Does it work in a window instead of fullscreen, too?

    • @proteque
      @proteque  Рік тому +1

      It does work in a window yes. But you need pause the emulator (F12) to get the mouse capture out of it (as far as I have tried) so it made more sense to run it fullscreen to me.

    • @elmariachi5133
      @elmariachi5133 Рік тому +1

      @@proteque Thank you! I found this regarding the mouse grab:
      "Running FS-UAE over VNC (or similar)
      When FS-UAE is running over a remote desktop connection such as VNC, the mouse might not work correctly. This is due to FS-UAE trapping the mouse pointer and trying to read relative motion from it. This might be incompatible with for example VNC.
      A workaround is to disable the automatic grabbing of the pointer (automatic_input_grab). If you're running Workbench and system-friendly programs, you can also enable mouse_integration. With this enabled, the emulated mouse pointer will follow the host mouse cursor."
      I think this could apply to local desktop usage as well..

    Great, man. But the big problem with this method is that each program that you convert into an HDF file takes up around 100 megabytes.

    • @proteque

      Yes, you are right. It is possible to do in another way with variables so that one can reuse the OS. But I haven't bothered to change it as this works and space is not an issue for me.

    Nice videos. I also like Amiga. I'm trying to emulate on antix but I can't find the Emulador anywere. I'm using antix 2024. I've tried the links on fs download page. It does not extract a python3 file because I'm using a recent version and I can't delete those files from /etc.
    I trying to find one. I got one on the installed applications. But it does not have the pré settings for emulation.
    Don't know what to do. I used windows. Now I'm trying to put the emulator on a old pc under antix. I'm not experienced in Linux. Man I'm watching a lot of your videos. You are doing public service. Maybe you can help me on this. Thanks

      As antix is based on debian this should be straight forward. But one of the problems with fs-uae is that it seems to have stoped and is not maintained anymore. Is antix based on debian 12? If so I could give it a try at home later.

      @@proteque No worries dude, it was just for the very beginning. It seems like you're pretty enthusiastic for this stuff, and have a knack for this. I love stuff like this by the way.
      More so, because I have always been intimidated by the Amiga installation process since I didn't grow up with it. Whenever I used to try to boot up FSUAE, I would get a disk drive clunk sound, and be filtered in seconds with fear lol.
      That being said, I think some cool workflows like working in the Amiga emulator would be cool.
      Do you know if the Amiga emulator itself would have access to the same Linux Mint file system? Ex: If I made songs on Protracker, and saved them, could I somehow retrieve the same files on Linux Mint so I can further mix the audio in other programs like Ardour etc?

    For better speed just enable chip ram and Z3 fast ram only

    • @proteque
      @proteque  Рік тому

      Thanx for the tip. Sometimes one just do things in the most optimal way when not scripting. My initial thought was to not include the Z3 ram at all as it was not needed for this program, but then a thought screamed that I would need it later. So not a very deep plan behind using both. But this made me wonder if this is true with emulators as well? will need to check that.

      @@fmlazar Interesting. Havent tried Amiga Forever the last 10 years or so. Does it integrate with the filesystem of the computer and adds icons in the start meny/desktop etc? or is it like the whdload-setup that fs-uae has? With fs-uae you start the fs-uae-launcher and browse through games. However it does not work very well for the productivity part of the Amiga. Off course one can always start workbench and then start the program from there, I just wanted to integrate it into the linux desktop.
      Is it the same and you start Amiga Forever and then start your game?
