  • Around this time of year, Some North american rail companies would run holiday trains to bring joy and celebration for the Christmas Season, while also supporting food banks across the nation. In this video, i'll be giving you 10 facts about some of North America's Iconic Holiday Trains.
So, this is a new type of video i'm trying out, doing these fact-type videos. If there is a positive reception to this video, i'll likely make do more of these for some locomotive rosters and railroads in the near future. Nonetheless, hope you all enjoy!

    'Christmas Spirit' by @SilvermanSound 🇬🇧

Very nice! Pere Marquette 1225 is also a good example since the Steam Railroading Institute runs it every year from Owosso, MI to some small town I forgot the name of. Oh well, I can at least say I’ve ridden behind it multiple times as a little kid tho!

Nice video! The BN’s holiday train’s caboose is still around and currently based out of Lincoln, Nebraska. It still has some of the old aspects of the train with “Santa Train Service Only” stenciled on the sides and green and white candy cane handrails.

Thanks Halton for covering my local division, the CSAO. Sad to see this train's days will be numbered, although I'm sure Chesapeake & Delaware will have a good replacement.

So California used to have an actual Christmas Train. It was from Metrolink and it used to be ran with cooperation of local fire departments and toys for tots.
They used to do a performance, you'd see Santa, Rudolph, Frosty, Mrs. Clause, And an elf. It was discontinued in early 2010s due to budget cuts.
It used to be ran by one of the last original F40PHs operating in California & a F59PH

KCS 0-8-0 1023 (the sole surviving KCS steam locomotive and the oldest KCS locomotive in existence) would be very perfect for the KCS holiday train to replace that nightmare flatcar

Another theory I have for CP switching to the GP20C-ECOs is because its a smaller engine and doesnt use as many lights and were also recently rebuilt

The Durango and Silverton narrow gauge railroad (previously a D&RGW branch line), does polar express trains 3 times a night. They get 1 of their locomotives and put polar express lettering on the tender. They put banners all over Main Street. And give you hot chocolate, cookies, magazines and a bell on the ride. A couple miles down the line they turn around at the wye that they call the North Pole. They have the hero boy, Santa and lots of elves wave at the train as it turns around. Before you get there the lights in the coaches go out and you and every other passenger has to say “I believe” to get them back on. They also play music and have waiters dance to the hot chocolate song. Probably one of the best polar express train ride experiences. This year they have 480 pulling the train. Last year they had 481, which had a 5 chime equipped. Sounded very similar to the polar express! They also have a box car in the yard that they put a fake campfire in and have an actor act the hobo.

So slight note: Oregon Rail Heritage foundation does not run the 4449 anymore on the holiday express. Oregon Pacific, the shortline that owns the railroad had said the big northerns cause too much wear and tear on their trackage and so they have to run small steam locomotives. Polson Logging Co #2 is on loan to them for such reason until they get their Mt Emily Shay #1. Additionally, back in the early 2000's Spokane Portland and Seattle 700 used to do a short jaunts between Portland Oregon to Vancouver WA carrying Santa into town and coming nose to nose with a Gevo you could take a cab tour of in a gold spike type style where Santa would get off the train and photo opportunities were held. I fondly remember going to these when I was little and it was always a lot of fun.

With csx's recent purchase of Pan Am Railways, it'd be pretty cool if the CSX Santa train and the CP holiday train did a shared event at Northern Maine Junction.
