The hole in the wall that doesn't go anywhere is a boot scraper. Put your foot on it and scrape the mud off your boots or shoes prior to entering the house.
It's a great idea which can still be found in the porches of many old houses.

Hi Lisa and Mark, some history of the property with the blue plaques there was and old church and then this was built on the seafront under the original castle grounds. Hastings - St Mary-in-the-Castle-The repairs to the castle in 1824 reflected an increasing interest in the picturesque. In 1825, the land along the shore below the castle hill was developed as part of the resort by the Earl of Chichester who owned it. At its centre was Pelham Crescent, so called after the family’s surname. The architect, J Kay (Colvin 4th ed p600), was experienced in the laying out of new residential developments and had worked for the earls at their seat at Stanmer (4 p93). At Pelham Crescent he placed a proprietary chapel at the centre with a curved terrace of houses each side. These have canopied balconies and distinctive semi-circular attic windows. The chapel was named after the church in the castle, which presented no problem, as the earl owned that too.
Though the chapel was complete by 1828, the houses on the western side were still unbuilt in 1836 (ESRO Par 369/4/2/1). The crescent and in particular the chapel are built against the hill, so only the facades facing the sea are visible. They are approached up a series of ramps, which Richard Morrice suggests derives from the Roman temple of Fortuna Primagenia at Palestrina, south of Rome (4 p111). Kay had access to more than one reconstruction of this. Under the chapel were burial vaults. The front of the church, though classical, is less obviously Roman. Above a pedimented Ionic portico, flanked by big windows, is the flat front of the upper part and behind the portico a deep recess containing two more pillars.

The building you saw was Former St Mary-in-the-Castle Church, Pelham Crescent, Hastings, East Sussex, England. Built in 1828 by Joseph Kay as the centrepiece of the residential Pelham Crescent. Now an arts centre. I was born in Hastings but live further along the coast now. Lots of history in Hastings hope you enjoyed it. Safe travels 👋🚍

The hole at Wellesley Court by the door has a blade across the bottom and it's for putting your boots into the hole (wearing them) and scraping the mud off the soles of them before you enter the property. They are common in many houses and halls built in the 17th Century onwards

Still , a great tour of Hastings as an interlude and then (drum roll please) Mark bags a chinese chippy-and a reasonably priced one at that so.....bonus😄 Loved the cars at Bexhall. I'm an automotive photographer and I love vintage cars and love to photograph them .I'd have been in my element here :) I might be wrong but the guys on the water at Eastborne were Kite surfing. LOVED Mark's "golden shower" remark on the peir. Its a good job I wasnt having a brew at the time. Gotta love our Northern sense of humour lol. a brilliantly put together video. Eastbourne was where all the senior citizens used to go on their coach trip holidays. My late aunt’s sister used to live in a flat on the sea front. I used to love going there to catch up with her. You ought to try Weymouth too while you’re ‘dahn sahf’! I lived there for a couple of years in the late 70s and my late husband and I thought of it as our second home.
