SMART Goal defenders, you are missing something. He is not saying not to set goals, he is not even saying don't use the SMART model for goal setting. He is saying that people have become so focused on fitting goals into a prescribed box that they short change themselves on the bigger vision. His approach is to start with the impossible dream and bring it back to manageable objectives that are established using SMART, to achieve the greater vision.
Pati Pena, If your SMART goal was to embarrass yourself in a public forum, you have achieved it. If success is tedious to you, pursue failure. If wealth is an offense to your dignity, endeavor to live in poverty. Finally, if you have nothing intelligent to say, resort to calling names. Best of wishes, and remember, having SMART goals does not make you a smart person.
Pati Pena by all means disagree and state opinion. You lose credibility when you call people ditz because YOU do not agree with them. Becareful not to play the hypocrite.
I watch this video many many times! Please don't skip it this is amazing Here is my notes on it 1 DREAMS/DESTANY : > What would be the magical thing that is even beyond my compression > What is WAY out of the box that would FIRE ME UP > What would be so AMAZING > Examples: “Lets go to the moon”, “I’m going to invent xyz” > Start With the WHAT - the HOW will be LATER 2. UPLIFTING: GAIN ATTRACT "Expanding my energy" instead of “i’m losing weight…” 3. Method Friendly - Practices and Routines > It can be turned in to a routine repeated 4. Behavior driven - Triggers set up to do this > Every time I DO X I will DO Y > Every time i go to grocery store I only go to the vegetable section > Every time i get in the car i say to myself XZY
Think DUMB, act SMART is what I got out of this. For my long term goals I'll think DUMB. For my short term goals, that enable me reach to my long term goals, I'll act SMART. ***** another great video. I think I'm hooked.
mutisofathens WELL SAID!!! Too many people in the comments section are not seeing this very obvious point. He’s not tossing away the value of smart goals. He is simply challenging us to approach life DIFFERENTLY, in a more holistic, wider-vision way that is not pigeon-holed into checklists without ever looking up, dreaming bigger and having an inspiring vision for our lives! He is adding OTHER valuable approaches that, when combined with the nittier, grittier smart goals, will shoot us wayyy beyond the moon! To he/she that has an ear.... :)
I watched this video a few weeks ago. I created a D.U.M.B. goal sheet as a result. This morning I decided to start filling out the sheets I made in an effort to get organized. I like focusing more on what I want to do, be, have or experience than on just what I want to get done. Looking for the gains I will get is so uplifting! Before starting to apply this info I felt over-whelmed and directionless. Now I feel excited and enthusiastic. Combining the sheets with what I am learning in the Motivation Manifesto course has given me direction and the "how to" to get things done, to become the person I want to be, to take actions toward the things I want to have and to experience the kind of life I have always wanted. Thank you, Brendon, you have inspired me to greatness!
My believe: Once you have your burning desire nothing can stop you. Every failure would be new fuel to keep your burning desire alive and more bigger than before.
Thank you for exposing the S.M.A.R.T goals limitation to the goals of dreamers. I may be a teenager but I already understand that goals shouldn't be limited and be extravagant as they want.
I've bought every product Brendon has launched. Yes I've spent over $10k on his products but I don't regret it one bit. I view money as exchange of values, the $10k investment is minuscule in comparison to how much value Brendon has provided in to my life. Keep it up Brendon, Live. Love. Matter!
Brendan, this is one of my favourite videos of all time. Your energy, enthusiasm, truth, vision and humour never ever fail to pick me up if I feel down or unmotivated. Thank you. I’ve watched it at least 10 times and shared it to everyone in my surroundings. With love and light, Solenne from Australia
Thanks Brendon for putting this on an ad, it has given me that push I needed to continue on my path. My goal: To be able to bring happiness to my family as well as to the whole world, in many ways. (financially, emotionally as well as to revolutionary human life experience as a whole) I don't know how long is this going to take, but if I do succeed, I will make sure Earth will become a much better place than it is today.
My personal opinion is that those ideas are wrong or at least incomplete. He confounds vision with objectives. Both are necessary. Those „dumb” goals are confounded with vision. Try to use dumb goals in people who have depression, and you'll aggravate their situation. You see, this makes you feel enthusiastic and have high expectations, but when you face reality and if unfortunately the reality does not coincide with your expectations you'll feel what? Frustration? Discouragement? And you'll lose more trust in the sources of help that you perceive (like him) and deepen your frustration. My recommendation: seek counseling 1 by 1 with an certificated therapist/coach.
To each their own, but SMART goals don't really help those of us who use the creative side of our brain more than the logical. So if SMART works for you, great!!
your energy and passion is so contagious.. my god if we all had someone like you in our lives as a child the world would be a totally different place. everyone needs a brendon as a best friend :)
Don't over-analyse this - how did it make you FEEL?! I laughed and I got an energy buzz about how I will approach goal-setting in the future and I feel GOOD :)
without basic goals being achieved there is no way a dream can come true on will alone, and i fully agree that to many are thinking to small :) but some like myself are thinking to big and getting distracted by the dream and the reality is leaving me behind
smart goals are the most efficient way of solving problems and executing plans. Examples you mentioned either worked because all other factors heppened to work favorably or they involved much precise-based planning
Actually, sending a man to the moon was almost SMART - it was Specific, Measurable, Time-bound (By the end of the 60's decade by JFK) and Relevant. Only Achievability was in question. Goals and dreams both are important, no need to turn on one of them just the praise the other. The way I see it, A goal is a dream that became Achievable and Time-Bound.
People need you in life, you have awakened me and enlightened me in EXACTLY the way I needed. Please keep posting more videos! You deserve more viewers!
I have gotten into the habit of reviewing the comments before viewing the program and there sure is a lot of stuck in the mud people with negative comments so opinionated that they present themselves to be close minded. I absolutely love Brendon's energy. He motivates viewers to live life utilizing the gifts we are all born with. Many of us lose site of the simplicities of living the dream of just living. The success of Motherhood is when we glow with joy that the child we nurtured is experiencing the joy of falling in love or the pride of independence they feel delivering their first newspaper or their first real paycheck. I feel that motherly glow of success every time one of my family members achieves a goal I know I contributed to just having been there with the words of encouragement and then the acknowledgement of their efforts. At the same time knowing when to say that was a great effort but I know you got a lot more of that to do better next time.!! Brendon has that kind of flow to his glow!!!!!!
You are probably the best motivational speaker on youtube. Not only do you have ideas, you have methods. Not only motivation but strategy too. Thank you for making changes in mine and other people's live. God bless you.
This was addressed in the book Smarter Faster Better - the Secrets of Being Productive in Life and Business - very helpful - talks about the history of SMART Goals and how to stretch your mindset as well.
D-estiny U- plifting M-ethod-Friendly (Practices Rituals, Disciplines, Action Steps, Repetitions) B-ehavior Driven. This video had really resonated with me Brendon, great principles and perspectives. I will look to apply them immediately. Thanx.
I think SMART goals are great for managers who are asking things of their employees, but when we took it out of the business world and applied it to our personal dreams that's where we, as a culture, fell short. We need to dream again.
I‘m so happy I just found you. Please never stop talking you just have that something that makes people/makes me wanna listen. I needed that! thank you.
There is a difference between a Vision and a goal. A vision is the dream and the goals are how you get there. For most people if you set the vision as the immediate goal, it will never happen. So in reality you must set the "vision" where you ultimately want to end up and then set Big goals to get there. Where the problem comes in is that people set goals that are too small to begin with.
Ok, I have to be a Debbie Downer here but SMART goals are how you get to your dream. What seems impossible to one may be a possibility for another. I do however agree making goals into something you gain and not something you lose! That's amazing. I'm going to use that perception in my coaching!
Okay, I'm fairly new to Brendon and his stuff and this video caught my eye, for the fact that it slated SMART goals. Now a million studies have been done on goal setting, and results consistently show that setting goals have positive effects. The size of the effect can depend on how emm... smartly, or how effective the goals set are. Again the evidence has proven SMART goals to be effective, they give something of a framework in to how set goals that will help you achieve bigger, or faster results and improvements. Nonetheless, I'm very much open to new and innovative thinking, so I was keen to see what he had to say. So Brendon went with a different acronym, DUMB goals, obviously making the point that we shouldn't simply subscribe to what the popular SMART method suggests, and that's fine. While effective SMART goals have been proven to work, simply getting reverting to "in the box" and "completing the checklist" thinking is something we need to be wary of. In DUMB, I do like the D, and U. It's good for goals to be exciting, so thinking big, going after dreams and picking uplifting goals, these sort of things are absolutely the sort of things that will inspire and motivate us to take the action to reach our goals. Though that's not to say SMART goals don't implement these, or at the very least that they can't. There is nothing wrong with dreaming big, the challenge is that it can be disheartening if the goal we want to reach is seemingly a million miles away, which can result in people giving up, especially if they hit a bump or setback in their progress (very common). This is where setting short, medium and long-term goals is advantageous. By setting goals that are attainable in the short term that help us improve, we get closer to the long term dream. We also get uplifted- a boost when we reach the targets set, whether that's 2 minutes off a 10k race, finishing a module in the course we are doing, or hit a sales target. This gives us confidence, motivation and belief to push on towards that big dream goal (completing a marathon, getting a qualification, getting a promotion). I fully agree with uplifting goals, though I wouldn't say this is particularly radical or groundbreaking. Again, there is a wealth of literature that tells us that instructions should be positive, not negative. Typically people setting SMART goals know to set their goals in a positive manner- focusing on what to do, move towards. That said, it's not part of the SMART acronym, so this inclusion is a worthy part of the DUMB goal that helps us to remember to set us goals that will get us inspired/excited (although I have seen the Acronym "SMARTER" in which the E stands for exciting). The M and B (in DUMB) I'm not crazy about. I don't disagree with them, they just aren't as clear or as concrete in terms of what we need to do. Okay, method based and behaviour driven, understood- but these things don't give me an instant feeling of "this is what I need to do". Meanwhile in SMART goals, we can look at the goals we have set and quickly ask ourselves "is this a specific goal, can I measure this, what time frame am I working in"". There should be a method, a way of moving in the right direction, but the term Method-Based is too abstract and not specific enough for me. And on Behaviour Driven, goal setting is all about putting the framework in place to change our behaviour (that's how we reach our goals), so setting behaviour driven as one of the fundamentals seems unnecessary. These parts of "DUMB" feel more to me like they are just filling in the letters in the (anti-SMART) acronym as opposed to serving an important and crucial purpose. So overall, I like the part of the message that urges us to think big, get excited and to think outwith the parameters of "SMART". Absolutely yes. But DUMB as a direct replacement to SMART? I'm afraid not for me. Principles such as being specific as to what you want to achieve, how you can measure your progress, whether the goal is achievable (and more importantly how to go about to achieving it), keeping records of your progress and having a time frame to do your stuff in are all worthwhile and beneficial things to think about and include when setting your goals. A lot of people will be uncertain of how to get maximum effectiveness from goal setting, there is a sizeable amount of groundwork to put in and you want to be effective with it, SMART goals will help the average person do that more than DUMB goals. I'm interested in seeing more of Brendon's vids, but coming from a sport psychology perspective, I wouldn't go reinventing the wheel on this one.
I am absoloutley positively with you on that. I am one of those who made everything based on an unspecific plan. I just wished for it, started it and found ways and tools while I was doing it. I started everything from scratch and made it beautifuly done from 0 to 100. I am an artist and business woman at the same time, then I could apply and combine all possibilities in my life to achieve what I ve ever wanted to have. I had no idea of SMART but it just showed up partially by itself and vanished when it was sort of obstacle to accomplish my goals.
Achievable is a measure of talent, skill and resources. What is achievable for one is not for another. Want to accomplish BIGGER goals, work on increasing your talents, skills and resources. What Brendon gives as an alternative is really just wishing. That will make you feel better for the short term but you are less likely to accomplish that than a smart goal. (Unless Brendon cares to share the research disproving hundreds of SMART goal studies or that his way is valid at all.)
I've been working on setting up my goals and just happened to see this video, it really hit me. Especially I loved what he said about uplifting goal setting and making a trigger point of your behavior. Thanks so much for making this video.
umm..SMART Goals shows you how to get a task done. Not setting your Goals keeps you brainstorming when an assignment has a deadline. Think big but SMART Goals can at least stir you with a practice if you don't know how to start or have a deadline.
Great talk, thank you. It means so much to me. I agree that SMART goals look great on paper, but when I tried to follow them, I find myself losing steam while going through the long haul, with all the ups and downs of life, and I find myself without motivation. Behavior-driven is far easier to follow through, if I could figure out how to apply them, but not everything can be accomplished using behavior-driven triggers.
You lose steam because you lose your vision. A goal by itself is meaningless. If you don't create your goal with an eye on the vision, then it's busywork.
I like how this video inspires people to be bold and dream big again. I also like the boldness to use a negative word "dumb" to convey something positive. Thats bold and creative.Even though the Method part is essentially "S.M.A.R.T" goals and the "D.U.M.B." part - is a funny version of a practical inspiring vision.
Omg amazing, I need this, thank you!! To "chase your dreams with reckless abandon" is way more inspiring & energising to me than the vision-limiting SMART goals (though yes, when drilling down to possible steps, you do then need those). Thanks so much, Brendon!!
It's a nice, different methodology from getting here to over there. I am helping someone at their job, and they have a link on SMART goal setting that I rolled my eyes at, and saw this video sitting here and glad I watched it. It's a differing view on how to do goal setting with a little different approach. What he presents will resonate with the person I am helping, so that's all I really need. Just a little less institutional thinking and more emotional thought processes.
Thank you! Finally someone step outside of the box and challenge this smart goal idea. I also hate Steven covey thing that everybody buys into. I also learn to not tell anyone about my goal. Everyone from my husband to my mom don't believe that I can achieve it.
If it were not for SMART goals I would have a very limited vision of success. I needed something "left brained" as you say to give me a victory. NOW that I have set into pattern and habit the SMART goal my mind is more open to great things. I speak for those who need the very basic feeling of "hey..I did it!l from there add on to the SMART goal and it becomes like compound interest. The SMART goal as far as I am concerned is not contrary to great vision and great success but rather the gateway to great accomplishments for those who have been living in defeat for so long.
Thank you for this video, I was about to go remind myself about smart goals. Now watching this, I have remembered my big idea for the future. This video has given me q diffrent outlook on my tasks, and I want to re-focus on my dreams. Now as a teen I have learned more and more on how to do some of the things I am wanting to do in life, this video is helping point me in the right direction. Thank you for takeing the time to make this video.
Searched Motivation and this video worked, so your sponsored ads are working.. dnt usually click sponsored ads. but title grabbed my attention and the 1st 5 mins of this video made me subscribe..
I think they go hand in hand helping each other out, it's all on how you structure it. It also depends on the field one works in and the client. Just my professional opinion and experience.
Let's look at this systemically: * To Map to GROW model - set inspirational Goals in G and SMART goals in W. * In Head-Heart-Gut (Wizard of Oz metaphor), start with the heart (what must I do) before you figure out the head and gut roles (what should I do and what could I do) * In 4-mat, start with the Inspire frame (for what purpose), before you move to the What and the How (& What If) * In Simon Sinek, start with the WHY. * In that story that Chris Howard tells, work on building a castle, rather than just laying bricks (but you still need to know how to lay a brick) * And so on . . . Brendan rocks an inspire frame, and this is a great example. But its just an Inspire frame, not the full coaching process. It doesn't change anything, just provides reasons for changing. All parts of the coaching process are necessary, not just one, and its our job as coaches to figure out which part our clients need (even if that client is yourself) to get them moving forwards. Ultimately: 1. If our clients are pumped but can't get it done, SMART goals are what they need 2. If our clients are stuck, help them build flexibility by recognising and reframing pre-suppostions and assumptions in the belief systems (Meta model violations, Denial, Blame, Justifications, etc) 3. If our clients are 'getting stuff done' but are lost for lack of purpose and pleasure . . perhaps this motivational piece is what needs to happen.
I get inspired every time from listening to brendon, I've flied to his Expert academy last year, he is amazing. DUMB goals are better than smart goals, that's for sure, as Brendon described. Unrealistic goals get unrealistic results and move the world!
This video makes a fundemental mistake, which is blurring the line between a "goal" which is in physical reality, and a vision/dream which is in visionary reality. Your visions can be as lofty as you like, but making goals you will not reach kills your momentum, and weakens the strength of your declaration. If you ALWAYS accomplish your goals, you have accountability to yourself. If you always set goals you dont meet, then you no longer have the value of being able to guaruntee that you will do what you said you will do, precicely Left brain is useful for some things, right braing is useful for vision, which can be as lofty as you like
Thanks Brendon for the BEAUTIFUL video!!!! Aye aye to more zest and sexness in life. Just wanna say I quit my job as an engineer 8 months ago to pursue my passion, my LOVE, singing. It wasnt "smart" to leave a company I was with for over 4 years and spent 5 years at university studying for a degree. But work was so dull and stressful i knew i had to leave or would rot away completely inside. Not coming from a traditional music background i practiced, practiced and practiced singing and 3 years later I've got a place in a music school and I am soooo looking forward to starting later this month. I feel alive again. My skin is better. My relationships with my family is better and i look better all because i am happy inside. Thank you again for reminding us to focus on the BIG picture. Lots and lots of love to you all!!! xxxxxxxxxx
Brendon has some quite good ideas. What sets him apart though, is his charisma. I truly believe that he is made of the same stuff that Tony Robbins or even the great Zig Ziglar were made. Time will tell.
I completely agree that it is the why that inspires the human souls. My goals are "crazy" to most people. So, they are not too small for sure! The point is that you don't reach the moon in day 1. And then SMART goals come into practise. So we need to build something go there. Let's call it "a machine". To create the machine we need to use something else. Let's call them "engines". So we need to create "engines" that we are going to use to build the "the machine". We need something else to create the engines...and that's the SMART goal. To create those engines. Then again...another smart goal for another small we need ...and then again and again until we create all the pieces of the puzzle (even if at the beginnning we don't know how many of them we need and how they look like).
I hate to contradict you Brendon but going to the moon was exactly a SMART goal. Specific - Yes, Measurable - er... obviously, Attainable - they DID it right? Realistic - Hmm, maybe it didn't seem so realistic, I'll give you that one, but Timely - oh yeah - by the end of the decade was the aim. So it seems to me that audacious goasl was also Smart.
Kennedy's going to the moon is a "classic example of "Leadership". It is a Mission" or "Vision", not a goal. A goal is when you know how it will get done usually ,and shorter term than 10 years. Brendon is stepping way outside his expertise here and clearly does not really understand corporate culture and envionments, like most marketers in the personal development field.
Robert Norton Actually Robert, I disagree. A goal is anything that you want to achieve in the future, whether that's tomorrow or 50 years from now. A legacy can be a goal. Yes, I see missions and visions as being conceptual but they can still be goals.
I really enjoyed the Uplifting part! Very true that it gets you more excited to reach a goal when it's uplifting. I kinda got into a bad habit of making my goals a checklist as well...so this video has inspired me to completely tear it down and make a vibrant and much BIGGER one, one that excites me enough to get me out of bed!!
I think that the point is more on with the inside and that spark with feelings, that is the big advice about the thinking with action, taking and managing the things with the soul not by strict rules always and principle
Dude - you remind me a little bit of a preacher - lots of schmooze but the high wears off. Dreams are great but the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.
🔥🔥 I like it. It's a different point of view that I totally relate to. Learning how to identify SMART goals alone wasn't useful until I mixed it with the dreams I set for myself to become more than just a worker in a company. Now I'm a worker, a youtuber, a coach, and a conscious parent, with still more dreams to accomplish. All that because I identified my dreams first then utilized the SMART technique in. Great Video😀
Now I know why my mentor would always strike the 'R' on the SMART GOAL. He says all goals are realistic and achievable. My question then is why are people still using SMART GOALS? Keynote Speakers still teach this in seminars.
You are really a very great person. Thank you very much for this great video. I learn many things from this video. Now I am going to execute it. Thanks again.
Wow! Probably your best video ! And the best video on goal setting!!! This totally resonates with me!! Great! I never liked the SMART paradigm as it felt very limiting to me . Thank you!
Ha ha! Great video! I once heard it said, "If David Beckham had a life coach in his teenage years, he'd now have a nice cosy career as an accountant!" I think it's a bit unfair, but it's very funny and makes a point worth noting! Like you, I've found it ESSENTIAL to separate our big dreams and life desires from the smaller, attainable, incremental goals that might show up WITHIN our mission. I love that you had the balls to put this out there!
The problem with those build a big business that takes over the world dreams is that IN REALITY -- the land of REALITY -- for every mark zuckerberg there are 1000 jack zuckermans.. people who set their aims far too high and fizzle out as a result.. instead of seeing the forest from the trees, everyone wants to be a billionaire -- it's nice to give poeple a momentary boost of motivation -- and yeah obviously it works, but a lot of what we think is in our control is not -- you do not have control over your unconscious intentions, motivations, or anything like that -- you have only conscious control, which is a very small part of your brain. almost 90-95 percent of successful entreprenurs are people who are already upper middle class or better. It is said that very successful people make it against the odds for a reason -- and the ones who do make it often ignore the people around them who supported them throughout the entire process. I think as a society our problem isnt SMART goals, it's this idea that success is up to YOU as an individual and that your success is up to YOU.. you''re responsible for who you are, but there is a whole lot that is simply out of your control, and for the vast majority of people, those things out of their control run their lives.. to get to these extravagant goals, people need psychological and material support -- most people need to set realistic goals or they will burn out in our sick, win everything or lose everything materialistic society.
See the problem isn't that goals are too high or not real enough. the problem is people keep saying can't. Which in itself is a disease if you ask me. If everybody and i mean even the ones that made it said I can't we would never have planes cars and soon be able to have passenger rockets to space. These were unrealistic goals to all. In your comment all I read was can't, and it is sad you will feed into that mentality. Brendon message was clear and precise. Set your goals high unrealistic as you would like to put it and work everyday at it focusing on that high tunnel vision and eventually you will get it. take the history of Tesla as a company. It was a crazy idea to have electric cars. Big giants like Mercedes Benz didn't want to buy into it. But nowadays everybody is racing to the electric mode on their cars because something unrealistic is proven to be real and more efficient. Dream and dream Big is a great message in my opinion. i know this because it works for me. You say you can't control your unconscious mind well go back and do your research and you will see you can actually guide your unconscious mind to give back to your conscious mind what you want and need. That my friend is the only to have total access to all your braininess faculties and use them all for your advantage. Try it and see the results in your life.
kapo schulteiis Kapo thanks for your response.. Honestly the entire first part of your statement is not anything I necessarily disagree with at all. My essential point is to say that it's one thing to hype yourself with a lot of words and inspiration, it's quite another to actually have the means and the support to follow through with your dreams in life. The plain fact of the matter is that most people on this planet are mediocre - this was true in the time of tesla and albert einstein and it is true now. Exceptional people DO NOT come out of a vacuum. To be clear, I did not say that people shouldn't dream big -- It's the last part of your statement that actually I feel is most worth responding to. "You say you can't control your unconscious mind well go back and do your research and you will see you can actually guide your unconscious mind to give back to your conscious mind what you want and need. That my friend is the only to have total access to all your braininess faculties and use them all for your advantage. Try it and see the results in your life." I believe you can prime your unconscious, and you can make the best possible choices you can in life -- however science shows us that our unconcsious motivation and goals line up with the people who are around us. Not everyone can simply rid themselves of the negative influences in their life -- we are a society -- I am tired of this individualistic mentality -- The way the brain works contradicts a lot of individualistic claptrap. I am someone who is dreaming big but I am tired of being told to dream big against ridiculous odds. People take WAY too much credit for things that are often out of their control and they blame themselves WAY too much when they fail. It's useful on some level to be a macho guy and say it's all up to me win big or fail hard -- but our motivations, intentions, actions, and focus in life are all ultimately out of our control. I believe in taking 100% responsibility for everything that is within my consious control. I believe I am responsible for my own efforts and this means I can a HELL of a lot -- but I also understand that unconscious forces are at work and ultimately people are like machines.. consciousness is a projection. This frame of thinking dramatically shifts the way we ascribe success and failure to people. If you have time, check out this lecture -- Sam Harris - Free will -- it is on youtube. I promise it will be worth your time!
***** I would like tot hank you back on your reply, and thoroughness reading through the lines, and absorbing what i said. At least you tried to understand, you tried is good enough for me, and i applaud that with a passion. You said "I believe you can prime your unconscious, and you can make the best possible choices you can in life -- however science shows us that our unconscious motivation and goals line up with the people who are around us. Not everyone can simply rid themselves of the negative influences in their life -- we are a society -- I am tired of this individualistic mentality -- " Well I would beg to differ. See i did something different. Something different i was called crazy for. my family the direct people i look out to called me crazy because they couldn't see through my lens. i would've done what you said, live socially, abide by social rules around me. The social rules around me were go to school find an average job graduate, go to work for somebody or an institution and follow their rules Earn a living. i fought that idea. individualism got me out of that. It made me who i am today, because of individual thinking I have people following me, i am changing lives. How is it not good when i am able to change lives and implement my ways of thinking to others who were not strong enough to do it for themselves to begin with. I will leave you to this. We all choose to make a decision at the end of the day. My folks decided to follow society norms. Which weren't really society norms, it was just what it appeared to be. I decided to switch it, and think differently. It works. Lets think differently and society will adopt it. i am checking Sam Harris out.
kapo schulteiis What you have to also remember is that there are just so many different types of people out there; 16 in total. A lot of people do just want to follow the rules, follow tradition, and be told what to do. Fewer think it's acceptable to break those rules and be "individualistic". Fewer still take action on going for what they believe is realistic! Please don't think I'm advertising something. There is a nuance. All I'm saying is I tried this personality test and it was very accurate about what it said about me was very accurate. I want to make things happen, yet because of the system's in place in today's society of check-lists and to-do lists. it's almost impossible to give a big "F- you" to society and go out there on your own to do something. My recommendation is to understand what personality type you are; 16personalities.com because I think it is very true that the first step to being powerful is knowing yourself. Know yourself, know what level you're at now, and know what you want to go for, then set your aim, be consistent and go for it. But just like anything in life, you have to be prepared! Hope that helps :)
Oliver Benson Oliver there is no doubt that there are many types of people in the world, however the myers briggs personality assessment has long been discredited by scientists. I reccomend you look up the criticism of myers briggs
I really loved your video...I guess I need some dumb goals in my life too...I should just do something totally not SMART, impredictable, not measurable, not time based, and not realistic,...why not?
Not set goals. Dream about it. Make it live in every tissue of your body. When you really want it you will find a method-friendly way to approach it. When you hate it you don't even bother to act on the success-proven cheatsheet of how to get it.

Yes yes yes....you are exactly right than you!!! I think folks should relisten and then they'll get it..
I was about to say the same damn thing. Think big, guys!

Please don't skip it this is amazing Here is my notes on it
1 DREAMS/DESTANY :
> What would be the magical thing that is even beyond my compression
> What is WAY out of the box that would FIRE ME UP
> What would be so AMAZING
> Examples: “Lets go to the moon”, “I’m going to invent xyz”
> Start With the WHAT - the HOW will be LATER
2. UPLIFTING: GAIN ATTRACT
"Expanding my energy" instead of “i’m losing weight…”
3. Method Friendly - Practices and Routines
> It can be turned in to a routine repeated
4. Behavior driven - Triggers set up to do this
> Every time I DO X I will DO Y
> Every time i go to grocery store I only go to the vegetable section
> Every time i get in the car i say to myself XZY
@Pouya
Thanks for these notes, they're helpful.
I think I might be right-brained, which would explain why SMART goals don't inspire me.
Why not use both? Have a smart goal to get closer to your biggest dream.
+Joy Happiness lool
+Lavrov I don't think you can reach your biggest dream using smart goals..It happens spontaneously when we are driven by our goals.
+Lavrov
I think I'm really a fan of this whole DUMB SMART method.
My believe: Once you have your burning desire nothing can stop you. Every failure would be new fuel to keep your burning desire alive and more bigger than before.
@@justsomevideoswemade hahaha great way to put it!
Love. Matter!
What did you buy exactly for that much money? Just curious! And, which products would you recommend the most?
" it is the why that fires the human soul " ~~ very well put Brendon.
(financially, emotionally as well as to revolutionary human life experience as a whole)
I don't know how long is this going to take, but if I do succeed, I will make sure Earth will become a much better place than it is today.
False-dichotomy. Our SMART goals are what get us to the DUMB goals. We need both!
Amen!
Simple as that!
😂😂 tore me up
SMART goals are perfectly usefull, use both!!
To each their own, but SMART goals don't really help those of us who use the creative side of our brain more than the logical. So if SMART works for you, great!!
Watching this video has given me a powerful start for the day.
your energy and passion is so contagious.. my god if we all had someone like you in our lives as a child the world would be a totally different place. everyone needs a brendon as a best friend :)
Don't over-analyse this - how did it make you FEEL?! I laughed and I got an energy buzz about how I will approach goal-setting in the future and I feel GOOD :)
🦋that’s why it’s so important to be mindful of your habits
Thank you Brendon. You give me 2 in 1. First, English lesson, second you make my day better. That is why I watch you every morning. Take Care.
without basic goals being achieved there is no way a dream can come true on will alone, and i fully agree that to many are thinking to small :) but some like myself are thinking to big and getting distracted by the dream and the reality is leaving me behind
smart goals are the most efficient way of solving problems and executing plans.
I am enjoying to journal now. It brings clarity and I feel great after doing it.
Thanx.
Found this video on Twitter and got up at 5am to watch it... WOW - got me thinking so much!!
I think SMART goals are great for managers who are asking things of their employees, but when we took it out of the business world and applied it to our personal dreams that's where we, as a culture, fell short. We need to dream again.
I absolutely love this. Brendon - You’ve gone and lit a fire under us again and given us the courage to dream BIG!
I‘m so happy I just found you. Please never stop talking you just have that something that makes people/makes me wanna listen. I needed that! thank you.
Brendon is currently my favourite person on YT atm🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
A dumb goal is a wish. If it's not at least specific and actionable, it's not gonna happen.
Ever heard the saying: "A dream without a plan is just a wish." -Katherine Paterson
If you don't create your goal with an eye on the vision, then it's busywork.
well im having to do an assignment on smart goal. Now this video makes me rethink everything
Omg... This is exactly the method I use when going for my dreams... And like he said it always seems to magically happen...

I find Smart goals pointless & inflexible. To each their own. I always go by vision & flow. Great vid Brendon.
as I see it, you got life statement and then SMART goals to accomplish that. There is no overlap
Thank you! Finally someone step outside of the box and challenge this smart goal idea. I also hate Steven covey thing that everybody buys into. I also learn to not tell anyone about my goal. Everyone from my husband to my mom don't believe that I can achieve it.
Everything you say and everything about you is so familiar it really trips me out.
This is a very powerful message thats much easier said than done
If it were not for SMART goals I would have a very limited vision of success. I needed something "left brained" as you say to give me a victory. NOW that I have set into pattern and habit the SMART goal my mind is more open to great things. I speak for those who need the very basic feeling of "hey..I did it!l from there add on to the SMART goal and it becomes like compound interest. The SMART goal as far as I am concerned is not contrary to great vision and great success but rather the gateway to great accomplishments for those who have been living in defeat for so long.
Wow! Have watched a million motivation or goal setting videos and never saw this guy before. Powerful ideas. Thanks!
Thanks Brendon. This is helpful for all of us seeking to be creative but reporting to board members brought up on smart goals.
Love this! It's so true that people are building the wrong kind of businesses. Busy work is not your life's work!
Wow. I've watched a lot of motivational speakers and just found your channel. So impressed. Immediate sub!
This is the best video I've ever watched on goals !
Thank you Brendon :)
i love your energy, your passion shines through :) thank you
THIS video right here. This video has changed my life!!
Let's look at this systemically:
* To Map to GROW model - set inspirational Goals in G and SMART goals in W.
* In Head-Heart-Gut (Wizard of Oz metaphor), start with the heart (what must I do) before you figure out the head and gut roles (what should I do and what could I do)
* In 4-mat, start with the Inspire frame (for what purpose), before you move to the What and the How (& What If)
* In Simon Sinek, start with the WHY.
* In that story that Chris Howard tells, work on building a castle, rather than just laying bricks (but you still need to know how to lay a brick)
* And so on . . .
Ultimately:
1. If our clients are pumped but can't get it done, SMART goals are what they need
2. If our clients are stuck, help them build flexibility by recognising and reframing pre-suppostions and assumptions in the belief systems (Meta model violations, Denial, Blame, Justifications, etc)
3. If our clients are 'getting stuff done' but are lost for lack of purpose and pleasure . . perhaps this motivational piece is what needs to happen.
Solid point man. Take this thumb-up already.
If you always set goals you dont meet, then you no longer have the value of being able to guaruntee that you will do what you said you will do, precicely
Left brain is useful for some things, right braing is useful for vision, which can be as lofty as you like
wow, so fun and inspiring to watch, feeling tingly top to toe and back up beyond the universe
Behavior driven triggers, brilliant! Thanks Brendon for this awesome insight!!
Much love from Bali ❤️
I have always wanted to build orphanages, schools, and hospitals around the world that are very cheap. For people who can’t afford them.
go go go
Wow!
I love this. I have thought about this very same thing... Every goal that has really moved the needle was not a smart goal!
Thanks for the motivation!!!! I have been struggling with my dream to become a script writer for movies but now I know what to do!!! Thanks again!
Brendon, I love you. I believe in magic in human beings and you inspire me all the time. you are sooo cool. *love from Kyrgyzstan*
Reach the moon but still stand on earth....long term reach the moon, but you still a man who live on earth....
The initial few minutes were the best....riveting !
This is my absolute favorite video I've ever seen!! I love all of Brandon videos but this one touch my soul. Thank you for being so amazing!
I enjoyed this Video Brendon. I have a very special goal for myself this month and watching this video helped alot.
Live this guy!! Love this video. He's nailing it. The new business, life coach.
Brendon; you are my kind of guy! Wise like Solomon!
I think that the point is more on with the inside and that spark with feelings, that is the big advice about the thinking with action, taking and managing the things with the soul not by strict rules always and principle
The meaning of Smart is so subjective. For example for some people is smart bicycling for other people is a risk.
Great Video😀
wow great stuff never thought of it like that. I am glad you advertised this :)
brendon, thank you for sharing with us. you have to know just how much you've influenced me in a great way.
Thank you!
HELL YES TO THIS VIDEO BRENDON! Man, you always have the right thing to say. Keep it up!
I love this!
Dont always set 'dumb' goals tho.. moderation is always the best :)
To be clear, I did not say that people shouldn't dream big --
It's the last part of your statement that actually I feel is most worth responding to.
"You say you can't control your unconscious mind well go back and do your research and you will see you can actually guide your unconscious mind to give back to your conscious mind what you want and need. I believe you can prime your unconscious, and you can make the best possible choices you can in life -- however science shows us that our unconcsious motivation and goals line up with the people who are around us. Not everyone can simply rid themselves of the negative influences in their life -- we are a society -- I am tired of this individualistic mentality --
The way the brain works contradicts a lot of individualistic claptrap.
If you have time, check out this lecture --
Sam Harris - Free will -- it is on youtube. I promise it will be worth your time!
***** I would like tot hank you back on your reply, and thoroughness reading through the lines, and absorbing what i said. At least you tried to understand, you tried is good enough for me, and i applaud that with a passion.

Well I would beg to differ.
