i don't mind it as long as it's focused on cultures and communities that obviously exist; it's why the flourishing of hip-hop subgenres doesn't bother me at all. it bothers me when it's conjuring up terms from reddit posts to describe what you think is a gap in music when you just browse the internet and don't write shit (butt rock, landfill indie, and ramonescore were all submitted recently and those latter two by the same person, with the sourcing for each being like. two shit articles and three reddit posts, which is ludicrous given how rigorous other genre submissions tend to be)
You could also argue that the culture surrounding different genres of music will influence the degrere to which said genre's influences are categorised as subgenres rather than being encompassed as part of the greater whole. E.g. as you pointed out with electronic music and it's hyper-specific splinter categories
I've sort of always assume "progressive" as a descriptor referred to how the music progresses, and not that it IS the most progressive. Like how it may have multiple movements, key changes, mixed meter, diverse time signatures. Progressive as in it's always changing. I could be wrong though
There is a huge schism in Progressive music lovers since the start: those who believe that progressive music is about "progression" and those who believe is about "being progressive and innovative". And a lot of people are still srguing between themselves about "the true" meaning of progressive We should have had two different subgenres from the start to avoid this!
@@SimonSater I'm just saying that's how i always thought of it. I'm not in the prog community or anything. I was just responding to Anthony saying prog is no longer cutting edge.
In my opinion, it was just a term thrown around. The pioneers of prog rock borrowed from classical music, which is not very advancing if you ask me, so prog rock to me is more about the composition being ambitious, complex and concept driven
Folk with that many makes so much sense as does Anthony's initial explanation that age of the umbrella genre will likely decide how many offshoots it has

there are only 2 reasons why genres are important: 1) so record stores can have a clean organization system for costumers who don't have all day to dig thru crates looking for something specific. 2) marketing. capitalism sucks, but it is effective. for artists, the hard sell "we're kinda like band X but with a more band Y style", for press the ol "for fans of", for record company exec's and A&R scouts it's "style X is in now, so make less style Y so we can market you better". sure genre gatekeeping is fun and stupid, but it's meaningless. music is music. you either like something or you don't.
@@mrlevinielsen but rap really isn’t a genre, which is the point I’m trying to make. It’s literally a different type of vocal it’s not a different genre
The number of genres says more about the people that make and listen to the music than the music itself in my opinion. I can't honestly believe that electronic music is really that much more varied than other genres that justifies over 500 subgenres.
I mean the main reason Electronic Music has so many genres is because it's defined very vaguely, It's like if you said "Percussive Music" is a genre and includes every style of music with major use of Percussion, I'm sure you could find just as many subgenres that do that, But most people would consider it a pretty ridiculous thing to call a genre.

@@Nerdz2experimental hip-hop (or alternative wtvr) is a subgenre bro, what you named right there are subgenres of experimental hip-hop, now experimental music on the other hand is more of a label but that's besides the point
One thing that I find missing in this video is the question of how relevant it is to sort genres out. In hip hop culture it's clearly not a thing when compared to electronic, metal or dance. If you are getting serious in a vast culture, navigating it with subgenres might be important or not. At its core, the fact that most electronic music and dance music is devoid of human voice tends to make it more relevant to specify subgenres (although it is never enough to describe all tracks), so we know what vibe, atmosphere, energy we are talking about. For those who are not familiar with this culture, it might seem boring and not interesting, but electronic music fans can have very very narrow tastes that make them want to enjoy a stage, a club, a scene or a party more than another (and sometimes it pisses me off). Plus, don't forget that most of this music is created with the intention to be played in DJ mixes, where it doesn't matter who made it. You can make deeply personal dance music but at the end of the day, it could just be a good, danceable functional track. Some artists enjoy fame in this culture, but if you have a hit it doesn't mean that people will recognize you in the streets. I could go on and on about anonymity in the context of dance music culture, the history of white labels, but that's up to the eventual reader of this comment to learn and appreciate without criticizing a culture that they don't know. What I know for sure, is that while hip hop has less subgenres, it is definitely the most "music video" driven genre, and that could be another subject of debate !
What are you talking about? He said all that with less words. The example was classical music. You compare vibe, setting, etc. He mentions with several decades and competing artists it's why it has a lot of subgenres. Similar to say another music genre without lyrics. Maybe watch the video and learn about other cultures you don't know about. Like musicals. They depend heavily on "music videos" when you rewatch.
Love how, for electronic dance music, he lists 2 genres that exactly 4 people in this world listen to, and then drum and bass as if it were equally as obscure 😂
I also wonder if the number of subgenres on a given genre on RYM is also a reflection on the RYM userbase. I wonder if there's less user interest in jazz compared to electronica, which is why there are less genres categorised there. Obviously, electronica was always going to have a lot of subgenres regardless but I wonder if jazz is being slightly ignored on the site.
I wouldn't say jazz is ignored on rym that much. It's certainly more appreciated than blues or soul or other old genres. There are many very highly received jazz records on rym, but admittedly as time as passed since the website was made other stuff has begun to wash over it a bit
@@krakenattackin7617 Yeah, Looking at just the top albums of all time on RYM, Jazz actually has more representation than plenty of other genres, Which not only have more subgenres listed there but might also be more popular in the general conscience at present, Like Folk, EDM, Or Punk.

genres are cool and help you find new music / what you’re looking for, but when i’m listening to albums and artists i like - i care about so many other things in the music
It's funny, blues has only 20 subgenres yet, there would be no rock, soul, metal, rap or modern day western pop music without blues music. Also, couldn't you consider Blues to be a Folk Music subgenre as it was black folk music? It's interesting how blurred the lines become when looking too closely at specifying genres.

However, in Electronic, it felt as if whenever a producer added any amount of unique flare it was *immediately* a new subgenre. There's like a billion ____step and _____ House genres out there lol.
I actually think that rap has easily the most potential to make the top of the list. The thing about rap is that unlike most main genres of music is that rap is not defined by their instruments. Most genres do have some instruments that are necessary or they need a replacement for that instrument that sound's similar. Rap however is simpy defined by well the rapping, not by it's instruments. Not even drums are on every song. I believe in theory you could rap on every song ever as long as it has a time signature but maybe some very technical rappers could do without as well. So in theory you can take any genre and add rap to it.
A bit tangential, but I've been playing iidx for a while now, and if you've ever played the game you know that in the song select layout the songs have a subgenre label above the title when you highlight one. I thought it was funny that this video specifically points out EDM genre's like kawaii future bass as an invention of obscurity when I see stuff like that all the time in iidx. Absolutely ridiculous. Rock has so many genres, even its GENRES have genres. Look how many subgenres there are of Heavy Metal, which is literally a subgenre of Rock.
people who argue over the bpms of d&b, jungle, breakbeat, and breakcore to decide what genre a song is while they all come to completely different opinionated conclusions that they present as infallible facts make me want to rip my eyelids off and flush them down the sink
Subgenre classifications drive me insane because it just opens up the floodgates for pendants on the internet to argue and "correct" people.
i don't mind it as long as it's focused on cultures and communities that obviously exist; it's why the flourishing of hip-hop subgenres doesn't bother me at all. it bothers me when it's conjuring up terms from reddit posts to describe what you think is a gap in music when you just browse the internet and don't write shit (butt rock, landfill indie, and ramonescore were all submitted recently and those latter two by the same person, with the sourcing for each being like. two shit articles and three reddit posts, which is ludicrous given how rigorous other genre submissions tend to be)
You could also argue that the culture surrounding different genres of music will influence the degrere to which said genre's influences are categorised as subgenres rather than being encompassed as part of the greater whole. E.g. as you pointed out with electronic music and it's hyper-specific splinter categories
And a lot of people are still srguing between themselves about "the true" meaning of progressive
We should have had two different subgenres from the start to avoid this!
@@SimonSater I'm just saying that's how i always thought of it. I'm not in the prog community or anything. I was just responding to Anthony saying prog is no longer cutting edge.

@@MothsInALampshade And I was validating your view
In my opinion, it was just a term thrown around. The pioneers of prog rock borrowed from classical music, which is not very advancing if you ask me, so prog rock to me is more about the composition being ambitious, complex and concept driven
Folk with that many makes so much sense as does Anthony's initial explanation that age of the umbrella genre will likely decide how many offshoots it has

the genres i saw mentioned the most were electronic, folk, metal, and rock. i listen to mid-air thief, who is considered folktronica. and spotify also labels his music as indie rock. theres folk metal. there is electronic rock. any of those genres could include rap or hiphop elements too.

If you think about it, nightcore is the biggest genre. You just slightly speed up any/every song, and boom, you have nightcore

Well, chef, I have nothing against it. But note nightcore's evil counterpart daycore (better known as *slowed + reverb*).
i think that makes it the least diverse? you cant have variations of Nightcore cus either it is or it isn't
unless you’re from Florida, if you speed up a song and you’re from Florida you created Florida fast music
that’s just boneless chopped n screwed
we need laws in the constitution regarding how many more "-core" genres that aren't related to hardcore are allowed
there are only 2 reasons why genres are important: 1) so record stores can have a clean organization system for costumers who don't have all day to dig thru crates looking for something specific.

As someone who doesn't like rap, all those genres definitly sound the same
One thing that I find missing in this video is the question of how relevant it is to sort genres out.
Thats why ye(go)at not only enslaves yo fav in the rapgame but also the musicgame as a whole wit his sound(beat, adlibs, flows,n voice) neg diff😹👎👎👎

Also adding the variable of language and you can pretty much add every language + rap
