What I love about this is how Opeth is able to make an eerie and heavy song without the use of Death Metal vocals. Nothing against them using them in other songs but it's nice to see them know when to turn them off.

I found a Headbanger's Ball CD on the side of the road one day when I was a teenager. This song was on it, along with End of the World by god Forbid, Trigger Full of Promises by Walls of Jericho, Vulture by A Life One Lost, and Nothing Remains by Chimera. That whole CD was absolute gold. This song was the most brilliantly put together in the whole thing, and was my first Opeth as well

As for the freakout solo in "Porcelain heart" we just did maybe 20-30 takes. I lost the sense timing and rhythm (too complicated) since Axe is playing all over the place, and couldn't foresee when the part should end. Somehow Axe perfectly understood the "beat" and nailed it a number of times, but it wasn't crazy enough until we got what's on the album. It was basically standing ovations in the mixing room once we got that down. Fucking tricky shit, not studio trickery!

my heart has gone through some stuff.
alas, i am not as delicate.
i bow my head for those who fall to the undertow. prayers with heart and hands clasped.
      the sadness is, the nothing.
      i wait...long.....
      when i feel it,
      just to make sure
      i write
      and i wait longer
and then the sun WILL come.
      hold out and write...
hold out til you almost die...
and if you have to call your brother or sister.
      please, i promise,
      just hold out....
hang baby. something is around the corner if yer willing to look.

Well, from what I read, this song is about an ex-girlfriend of Mikael committing suicide after they broke up, so uh, yeah I guess you're right

Just got some acoustic panels for my Klipsch reference speakers and begun listening to Opeth in a new light.

To me peak Opeth was Ghost Reveries, a masterpiece album, GOAT level, every moment of that album is incredible. Afterwards, there are moments of brilliance, like this piece, which is amazing, however, these moments seem to come far fewer between as you move forward through time.

I completely disagree. Watershed was a brilliant album. Even Heritage, Pale Communion and Sorceress had several good moments.

@@alessa_cybergoth I did say there were flashes of brilliance afterwards... I also really liked Sorceress and Pale Communion. But those were mixed in with song that I really didn't enjoy. It's not like Ghost Reveries where you could play it forward to back, back to forward, and every song was is brilliance to me. For context, I didn't really enjoy a lot of their earlier stuff too, it's just Ghost Reveries is where Opeth and I gelled perfectly. I do that with other bands too like Lacuna Coil, I absolutely loved Karmacode, but most of their other stuff is meh and forgettable to me.
